As a former Marine Engineer I can imagine what was going on in the Engine Room there isn't any more helplessness that an engine refusing to start. One of the videos shows heavy black smoke when the crew try to restart. The Motor Vessel has to use Diesel for maneuvering and going to black oil for cruising at a constant speed this is the nightmare of all times for the black gang.

What I question is when the Port Captains knew of the electrical back out and couldn't immediately restart the engines and supposedly dropped the port anchor why did the ship take a hard starboard turn into the bridge structure?
@moonchild7456
@moonchild7456 29 күн бұрын
What made the engine go out and why no generators? This would seem to be a HUGE deficiency on the part of the ship's management. I can't believe this is an every day occurrence or else we're in even worse danger than we thought. I also wonder if there is any evidence of foul play (hacking) of their system. You don't have to be a conspiracy theorist to wonder.

‘Black gang’ ??
@SpcPoole
@SpcPoole 29 күн бұрын
@@pushslice The term black gang comes from when coal was still used for firing boilers and to a lesser extent early oil-fired boilers. The coal dust and sot would get everywhere and turn everything black. So when the crews from the engineering spaces would come up from below. They would be black, clothes, skin, hair, everything. Add to that and the word gang can be used to denote a group of people and you get Black Gang used to describe members of a ship's crew that worked in the engine rooms, fire rooms, coal bunkers, boiler rooms and or any place that gave the ship power to operate.

Like what if they were ok through the key bridge and Chesapeake and then 600+ miles in the ocean power was gone. So crew could have prevented by stay in at the port knowing there was issues, but the ship crashing was not their fault.

But if this would have happened middle of the day, recovery efforts would be going on for a long time. There's going to be(o.k., already is) a whole lot of finger pointing and second guessing going on , buy unless it was gross misconduct involved, just a very sad accident. With so many things, the weak link or the answer to avoiding something like this comes from an incident happening. Going forward I would imagine safeguards and protocols will look way different.

As a merchant marine engineer, reading this comment section is painful! We don’t know what happened the only people who do know what happened was the ships crew and the pilot. From what I see they lost a genset or something else that caused an electrical failure. They didn’t lose the main engine. Steering on a ship works just like steering on a boat. You have at least two hydraulic pumps driven by regular old 3 phase AC induction motors. You only need one but you always have at least one backup incase of a failure. The same goes for gensets. Lose electrical power and you lose steering, air compressors, ect. You basically lose the entire vessel. Now at some point after the first power failure the ship went to full astern propulsion. Whether it had a direct reversing engine or a controllable pitch wheel I don’t know. If it was a direct reversing engine then I think we can safely say someone ordered full astern. Whether or not this was the correct decision I can’t say. It’s easy to say had they not backed down on it they would have made it through the bridge but because of the crosswind and the fact we haven’t seen a head on video we don’t know. Now if the ship had a controllable pitch prop then a loss of electrical power will cause some systems to go into full reverse pitch. Either way the hard backing down is clearly evident in the video both from the black smoke and the prop walk pulling the stern to port. Once again without a centerline view we can’t know if the ship was going to go through the bridge or it was already getting set.

I think energy would be better spent figuring out any ways this type of tragedy could be prevented in the future. My thoughts are with the families who lost their loved ones, many if not all of whom were immigrant construction workers doing the hard work that holds this country together. Anyone else looking at these pictures and wondering just where to start with the clean-up? I am, but as with anything complicated, the method will be to take things one step at a time. Probably clearing the container ship out of the bridge debris so that it can be hauled back to the Port for inspection and then repaired. Then crews will start at each end and in the middle to clear the main shipping channel! Mark from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺

I don’t know the maintenance history of the ship but I do know that propulsion systems fail on a regular basis.

@@timothylegg It's highly doubtful that any part of the old bridge will be reused. The bridge was nearly 50 years old, and while it looks like it was in good condition, it likely doesn't meet modern building standards. So, a new design would be required to replace it, making the old causeways and foundations obsolete, meaning they are more of a hindrance than a help, as they will need to be removed before construction of the new bridge begins, unless the new bridge is built beside the old structures.

Rush Hour mixed with inclement weather would have been a recipie for a Major Disaster. Picture any major traffic bridge during Peak Hour around the world and imagine all of that traffic just falling into the cold water in an instant and then the framework of the bridge falling in on top of them? Cars, trucks, buses (school, commuter, coach, tourist), semi-trailers (some with Hazardous materials) all just suddenly dropping many feet into the water while being hit with pieces of the bridge structure? Instead of mourning the loss of six construction workers, the whole world could be mourning the loss of three to six thousand lives with many seriously injured. The mayor of Baltimore might complain about any criticism of this bridge by what he calls non engineers, but it is clear that this was a very fragile structure, what if a small aircraft had hit it. The ship does not appear to have suffered as you might expect from such a collision, if you consider the effect on the bridge itself. I think it will be evident as to the bridges fragility when observing how difficult or not it is to remove the structure from the river.
@enadegheeghaghe6369
@enadegheeghaghe6369 29 күн бұрын
The bridge wasn't fragile. Most bridges in the world would collapse if they were struck by a ship weighing 150000 tons moving at 8 knots. You have no idea how much force such a large and heavy object can exert
@stuartgraca
@stuartgraca 29 күн бұрын
@@enadegheeghaghe6369 my observation is that the concrete road bridge remained in tact , the metal structure failed completely . Apart from a full suspension bridge, a bridge in several sections should not fail on all sections, tgere seems to me, a fragility due to such a top heavy design, the weight appears to balance on the pillars . It would make sense if there were a series of concrete guide barriers either side if the pillars foundations as a precaution, these could have been built as ricer traffic increased and ships became larger, especially this form of commercially over loaded ship, were the containers are well above the deck level. Not that thus accident could not have been prevented, there appears to be a lot if rules and regulations that should now be applied to such vessels in restricted river access. I wonder why the bridge was designed as a single unit and not as three or four separate spans.

@stuartgraca 28 күн бұрын
@@gregorylyon1004 you have answered one part of this question, there should not be any ships passing this type of bridge that are above a weight that will cause a collapse in event of an accident . I wrote a bit more on another site and was interested to gear an ABC news program from Darwin, Australia, in which two bridge engineers remarked on exact the same problems I have high lighted here and in the other posting. One being a question about building a rigid integrated metal structure on insufficient pillar supports and why no additional anti ship barriers in the river , either side of tge pillars. Given the rise of ship size and weight over the years, these could have been built retrospectively . You might consider my point of fragile in relationship of the high steel arch to the connection with the pillars . I believe there are four pillars at each of three major support point and in theory this integrated metal structure should have remained intact despite losing a pillar or two at any of the three supporting points, however, one pillar at one end was hit and the whole structure folded. What about the huge cruise liners passing a new bridge, is it OK to say cross ypur fingers each time, or learn and either stop the commerce and large ships or find a way to guarantee the bridges safety. What worries me is the rush to build a new bridge while estimating the time needed for an investigation will take two years.

i suspect they are going to find the impact was well above the water line. It seems the ship came at the pier on an angle and the bow of this ship has significant flare or what's sometimes called a clipper bow. The rail extends out significantly from the narrow 'peak' of the bow at the waterline. This 'over reach' meant the rail contacted the support columns FIRST and cut then like a swinging axe .... before the water line hit the support structure. Again, more extensive protection might have 'kept it away' .... the ship hit a glancing blow and might have slid down the base had the overhang not clipped the column . . . There are many pictures of cases where a clipper bow hit a pier head on and the damage is well above the water line as the point of impact was well up the flared portion of the bow ....

This seems a little pointless. They are going to need a 3D Lidar and Sonar survey to build a model of the structure and figure out how to cut it up and remove it. The ship is unimportant. First they’ve got to get what’s left of the bridge out of the channel to reopen the harbor.
