歌曲起始描寫戰爭過後的景況：槍聲平息、砲火不再，士兵們也踏上返鄉路途。遍布曠野的十字架，象徵戰爭中許許多多生命的逝去。次段，戰士以堅定的口吻道出對愛人矢志不渝的承諾，樂曲的情緒也在和聲堆疊下變得飽滿，情感真摯動人。隨後，以年輕戰士的視角，描繪其所經歷的磨難。哪怕戰地泥濘、菸草燃盡，他依然不忘帶著對家、對愛人的惦念。同時，戰士為自己的離去向愛人表達歉意，話語中帶著無奈與不捨。歌曲最後重回關於「愛」的主題，透過「永恆、無盡」等詞的交錯輪替，使情感綿延不斷。
