I am a classically-trained violinist, and his playing leads me to believe that he is classically trained, since his technical mastery of the instrument is so immense and complete. The reason that he is so incredibly good at this style is that his mastery of the instrument is sufficient that he can make it do literally anything physically possible, and he knows what those possibilities are and uses them all. He has the technical tools to realize his imaginations into sounds. How awesome is that?

Incredible. Nuages is one of the best songs ever written IMHO and what a fine performance. Florian is a fine violinist who understands and executes the elegant style of Stephan Grappelli but adeptly interjects his own ideas and style. I could listen to him all day!

Florian really makes you fall in love with the sound of that instrument. It’s what Antonio Stratavari had in mind when he made his masterpiece violins. Oh, and Richard Smith is also a monster guitarist. Love listening to him play the entertainer!

Richard Smith is such a wonderful guitarist; it makes me wonder why he doesn't seem to care how little his guitar projects and how thin his sound is. It's baffling because he is such a top level player.

SeamusAndrewMurphy yeah your right. I don’t know if he’s playing his $5000+ Martin signature model or something else, but you would think he could make an effort to come up with some electronic solution. The only answer I can see is he’s a stubborn ideological purist.

@@charlesalan62 It comes in part from the fact that it's a nylon-string guitar. Also I think this guitar has a piezo pickup which he would normally hook up to an amp, but he's not here. To be honest I'm not a huge fan of the piezo pickup sound in general, although in this case it would help him cut through the mix. I'd rather see him just pick up a gypsy guitar, or a dreadnought or anything with a big sound...

thinkpad20 Thanks, I figured it was nylon strings. I didn’t notice the mic he was using. I agree that he probably should play this on a gypsy guitar. Check on KZbin , The best jam session I’ve ever heard, with Tommy Emmanuel , Richard Smith and a couple of other guitarists I can’t recall , in 6 parts it’s amazing.

@@charlesalan62 oh yeah, I've seen Swing 42 from that session (assuming that's what you're referring to) and his amazing version of The Entertainer. All great stuff, the Joplin blows my mind. Richard's sound was pretty good there, although to be honest I still prefer the steel string sound for that style.

Yep Richards guitar sounds very poor. Possibly commissioned or given as a present and trying to justify it. Itcould be just that hard pic on nylon strings. Beautiful playing by all.
