First thing I'd do, is cover my mouth and nose with something that can act as a filter. Preferably a respirator, if one's available, but maybe a shirt or something somebody had stuffed in their pack and might not have absorbed too much dust from the shockwave. The initial gamma radiation (at least most of it) from the blast would have been absorbed by the surrounding structures, since it was at ground level, but the amount of dust kicked up by a surface detonation means far more fallout than an air-burst attack from an ICBM or gravity bomb. Fallout spreads as irradiated dust and debris, and since any dust you get into your lungs will mean radioactive decay products are introduced directly into your bloodstream, you do NOT want to breathe that dust in! The less of it you breathe in, the greater your chances of survival!

No, the first thing you do is try to remember how to put one foot in front of the other. You just woke up from a helo crash. Nothing short of a miracle that you have no broken bones or internal injuries. Having a concussion would be par for the course. Logical processing isn't even on the top 10 things your brain is trying to do right now. But if the shockwave knocked you out of the sky, you were too close to the blast. Every cut and abrasion is an entry for radioactive particles. Truth of the matter is, you are already dead. Your body just hasn't gotten the message yet. Everything you have on you has been exposed. The closest thing to clean water is whatever you have on you. Same as food. Once the military is aware this was a nuclear explosion, they likely would set up a parameter. A safety zone if you would. Not that any safe zone, is even really a safe zone. But they aren't going to send people in there. You are on your own. Eventually they will start to send in drones to measure radioactive levels, but that is still more than a few days away. This just went from a combat mission to a humanitarian one. The military will do what they can for anybody who walks out of the designated contamination zone. But don't expect them to be the cavalry.

Know how John Wayne died? Cancer, from suspected radiation exposure. Almost 1/2 of the film crew who worked on the movie The Conqueror would suffer from cancer as a result of filming near an atomic blast site. These people are screwed. Way too close to the blast. The lucky ones didn't survive the crash.

They've ruined Aftermath, IMO. It's way too..."lively" in the remastered version, whereas in the OG version, you're the only one still alive (for a couple of minutes) and it's completely desolate and ominous, which made it that much more horrifying.

What they didn't find was nuclear weapons, HOWEVER, he did have a uranium enrichment facility under construction. So while he didn't have nukes of his own, he WAS in the process of attempting to develop them. Whether or not you think the US jumped the gun on that, I'll leave to you.
