@@BERSERCŒUR I mean this is somewhat standard (if you look at longer term history). France is a major arms exporter to both NATO aligned and other nations, so competition when alliances move is typical. Think how many times a NATO nation has fought a country with French tech. Might be wrong. Usually am. W.A. is big enough to be a nation in its own right. Five times bigger than Texas. All that land, all those rich resources and unlimited fresh water for just 2.4 million people. All that beef, lamb, poultry, wheat, gold, bauxite, uranium and diamonds. More forest than all of Europe. More desert than all of the Sahara, and yet still so fertile. The world's richest fisheries. No wonder China wants it. And the Aussies removed. Best coverage I have seen on this story! Makes three points others miss: 1. The fact the UK is in the deal at all suggests the Royal Navy's Astute class model may be what the Aussie subs will be based on. US yards already running at close to full capacity on their attack subs. 2. Submarine bases are very important and hard to create. Takes years to develop a base for nuclear subs. Training people up is one thing that takes time. But once built, US an UK subs may get to use a Perth or Adelaide base alongside Australia. So boosts capabilities of these fleets, not just Australia's. 3. Aussies may not have to wait till mid 2040s to get hands on subs. Deal may include leasing starter subs to get them going. Probably used models, but hopefully not bangers!

Irrelevant, guys. As Bink already pointed out, it will take YEARS before AUS gets these subs built and into action. The MAJOR part of this agreement (as Bink also pointed out) was the formation of a sort of pseudo "Pacific NATO," (i.e. being able to place US/UK subs ALREADY in the water, closer to China.) I think creating a strong "deterrent" to China's intention to "rule" the entire South China Sea Basin was always the end game here for the West. That is why China is so pissed. In the great chess game that is geopolitics, the West essentially said, "Check."

Not sure how you are determining costs, UK and USA have completely different models for determing through life platform costs, USN doesnt factor in contingency or through life exchange rate estimates, whereas UK and Australia do. Bear in mind that the first 3 years of Astute manuf required US Commerce Dept, State Dept ans Usn intervention to overcome manuf probs n the UK, there was a report made avail on the status of UK ship building issues that was triggered by US Commerce Dept circa 2009 IIRC. But takes twice as long to build...your number are a little off. The Astute can carry about 2/3 the armament of the Virginia class. So 66% as deadly, not 90% and the costs are 2.6 billion USD vs. 4.4 billion USD. So it should correctly read: The Astute is 41% cheaper and 2/3 thirds as deadly. The big reason I see is that the Virginia Class takes more people to operate and Australia is going to struggle to find qualified people to man 8 boats. Neither are a bad choice. Since the Aussie submariners already train with the UK the Astute is probably the frontrunner....unless they need them quickly as an Astute is taking 11 years to build.

I could see an Astute variant being used, with Aus crews learning on the in production existing UK hulls, and possibly even the first few 1-2 built in the UK in existing yards - Barrow can definitely have 3 hulls working at the same time based on existing timelines and currently only has the last 2 UK hulls laid down. Aus would taking a greater role on their own boat, particularly in the later stages as teams would have worked on 1-2 UK boats already. Meanwhile Australian yards are built/modified and the port infrastructure is put in place with heavy US support - the US getting what it wants (port access) ASAP, potentially with the ports serving US boats before Aus ones even launch. Aus crews embed with UK Astute boats on patrol from the get-go, maybe with some limited command level deployments on Virginia boats too to learn US operational procedures for mutual support purposes. As phases of UK built boats are completed, the workforce moves to Aus, with the UK team acting as support for some of the remaining boats, likely tapering depending on speciality with things like nuclear support continuing longer. Thus serves the UK as maintaining that skillset otherwise usually requires a new line of submarines at home (V class replacement helps with that). with delays in initial laying down, Aus facilities being ready to lay down their own boats - though that depends on how many the UK yard builds for Aus Vs Aus builds at home. Optimistically - 1-2 years to get agreement and materials in place to lay down a new Aus boat at Barrow, 12 years to build, launch and commission. So we're talking 2034 for an active service Aus boat at the speedy end of things. As Aus boats launch, initially mixed Aus/UK crews, particularly in specialist areas, with a handover over time. At peak, Astute had roughly a 3-4 year gap between commissioning of sequential boats, so by the time boat 3 commissions into active service the Aus navy will have had at least 16 years of Astute operational experience, likely more like 18-20. Slower if there is a delay in training Aus navy crews or Aus insists on building all boats in a home yard.

I think you might see a UK built Virginia variant for Australia. When the UK was having difflculties with the Astute design and build, the US offered to license the design IIRC, just as we did with the Burke class DDGs. This would keep the UK yard in production ,and Australia will get the more capable SSN. A Virginia SSN carrying nuclear armed Tomahawks in some of its` VLS would give Australia a strategic deterrent.

@@robertenglish5980 a few problems with that: 1. The English yards don't have experience with a Virginia build, and re-tooling for a new class would likely be a PITA, especially for what would likely be a limited run before handing over to Aus yards - it's less likely Aus wants all 8 built overseas in my mind at least, but I could be wrong. Lots of production delays there, not to mention sorting a 3 way technology transfer. Aus build teams also couldn't learn on the in-progress Astutes, they could with the in-progress Virginia's but then they'd have to move 3 times (US->UK->Aus). Just too complex a solution for me, though given the nature of politics it often outputs a messy solution as a compromise, so not out of the question. 2. There is a big difference between Aus having nuclear powered submarines and nuclear warheads. It's not part of the NATO nuclear sharing and has no systems or structures for nuclear weapon storage or release. "One does not simply *hand over* nuclear weapons" even to a close ally. This one would also have a lot more global political fallout than just a nuclear reactor, they'd need to be added to NPT, or at least NATO nuclear weapon sharing, both with major barriers (especially given they've just pissed off France). Aus is also a signatory of the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty. Based on that, even having nuclear armed Virginias based on Aus soil would be a breach.

We (Australia) have suffered years of being unable to fully man our Collins Class sub fleet at various times. I'm guessing a new recruiting drive for Submariners will accompany this new decision and make the Astute Class seem the more likely option going forward due to its smaller crew than the US option. With the Collins class being extended out past 2030 it gives time for the new Aussie Astute's to be built as they take longer to build that the US option as well. This is a pretty solid deal for us and something well overdue.

Refreshing to see a solid analysis of the situation. I think you're spot on when it comes to the machinery that Australia will buy, it's almost certainly the Astute. What are the alternatives? The Virginia is too big and arguably not a good fit for the shallow littorals around SE Asia that the Australian boats will spend a decent amount of time operating in. The Astute class is that little bit smaller and as mentioned, has lower manning requirements. I believe, possibly erroneously, that the reason that the Americans are involved is that the UK is still bound by the agreement not to transfer technology that was handed to them in the 1958 deal between the US and the UK. That is in addition to all of the factors raised in the video regarding basing. Interesting side note - during WWII, Perth (Fremantle) was the biggest submarine base in the Pacific outside of Pearl Harbour. Around 40% of Allied submarine missions in the Pacific were launched from Fremantle.

Makes the most sense to go with the Astute class. The UK will have free building yards and personnel to build them soon, whereas the US is focused on building sub for themselves so they will not. The Astute class is already a big jump in boat size and crew size from the Collins, the Virginia class is just huge in boat size/crew size compared to the Collins. Australia will have to drastically increase its total sub personal size just to get 6 Astute class boats in the water to replace the Collins, let alone getting more than 6 and Australia has a long record of difficulties in maintaining enough sub crew members. "....countering Chinese activities against U.S interests...." I don't know about you, but I think in this case Chinese activities are not just in opposition to U.S. interests, but more like the interests of almost any country in the Asian hemisphere. You can just bet that anything China does for any nation, it comes with strings and major bullying. I can see that getting the Australians into Nuclear Submarine building will help America in that the U.S. will no longer have to shoulder the whole load of balancing the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy. Your idea about bringing in the British would be a great idea. People that want to draw down the military in the U.S., UK, and other nations have no idea about maintaining a technology base. No country can just start building world class aircraft and ships from no where. And once you lose a manufacturing capability, there is a long learning curve to regain it.

Overseas reactions: It is quite farcical that the shady French Navales Group known for past corrupt behaviour is now infuriated towards USA(!) for this "thankful divorce" in the Australia-French collaboration after Australia have been in bed with them for five years and not one weld has been welded! WTF? Too much French cheeses and wine? Also, the all too predictable CCP Chinese response is of course disingenuous coming from a ruthless wolf-diplomacy dictatorship that is busy building itself the mightiest military force in the world. The aim of the PLA is not self-defence, the aim is to be able to project itself globally over land and sea in a "hot-war" anywhere. CCP Chinas claim that Australia is stuck in a cold war mentality is clearly a result of the cold wolf-war diplomacy that CCP China has initiated towards many countries, including Australia for "asking the wrong question". CCP China stops at nothing and uses cross-border kidnappings, hostage diplomacy and fake convictions behind locked doors and blackened windows using "laws" that are in reality military decrees issued from the Red Emperors court high above. Consequently, CCP China have more judicial executions than the rest of the worlds legal systems put together. The preferred CCP execution location is near a hospital and with a bullet to the neck so most organs can be freshly cannibalised for a profitable CCP supported transplant trade. This has become the only way parts of Hong Kong students can travel the world today. As the old saying goes " late shall the sinners awaken" and the scrapping this week of the bizarre French submarine "business" is indeed costly and late in the game, but extremely welcome in the interest of Australian future defence security. Lets' hope the start of this re-think will also accommodate some flexible and realistic creative thinking, to start with a separate Australian Submarine Command, Virginian submarine imports, submarine base-construction and Collins's conversions beginning this year!
