Radioactive waste containers are shielded. For example, Magnox nuclear flasks (containers) are covered in a 15 inch thick layer of steel, though it may be thinned to allow for high-level nuclear waste (waste from reactors, for example) to have additional lead shielding.

I saw one of these DOE rigs go through Lodi,Ca. once. I was nearly run of the road by DOE pickups with men inside with ARs visible through the pickups windows. Ca. Highway patrol motorcycles and cars with DOE vehicles took turns leapfrog to block the intersections as the rig went down the middle of the two lane hwy 12. It never stopped as the law enforcement blocked all intersections. Must have been 30 vehicle convoy

2:06 This is awesome. I agree wholeheartedly man, what a cool thing to witness. Nuclear waste transportation is something that is critical to get right. There's a lot at stake when you're dealing with some of humanity's most dangerous trash. Robert, you did a nice job keeping the camera steady, you filmed horizontally, and you filmed something really unusual without losing your cool and making the video unwatchable. GOOD JOB ROBERT! let's gooo
