I've been listening to Symphony X for almost 20 years now and I love their old neo-classical prog style in the past but I'm someone who loves all the no bullshit heaviness they have become. The heavier they get, I get to love them more. SX all the way baby!

A lot of hate in the comments. In my opinion, this song is catchy as hell, heavy as hell, and all around a fantastic song. I've been listening to Symphony X for about 12 years and I know it's not like their old stuff, and that's what I like about it. If I wanted to listen to something that sounded like Symphony X's old material, I would go listen to Symphony X's old material. The fact is that they are able to gracefully evolve their sound without compromising the overall integrity of their music, unlike bands such as Dream Theater, for example, whose recent few albums are so bad in my opinion that I almost try to forget they exist just so I can continue to like the band overall. DT's fantastic musicianship just doesn't cover for the lackluster songwriting (not to mention Labrie's ever failing voice). Symphony X, on the other hand, still has amazing musicianship and strong songwriting in spades, and I'm excited to continue to watch their music evolve over the coming years. I love this band.

CelestaGrey Exactly. All bands have to change from album to album. If they played the exact same every time they would get really stale. If they kept with the old style everyone would complain about every album sounding the same. If they change everyone complains about them sounding different. Better to change and gain new fans than not to and bore the old ones.

Slightly different from what I expected... First and foremost: The similarity to "The Mob Rules" during the vocal verses annoys the F* out of me. Adrenaline Mob covered this song and Dio is the greatest inspiration for Russell, so it's kind of ugly to compose something so similar. Now to the song as a whole: I wanted more exploration on Allen's range and keyboard highlights. The riffs and drums blast throughout the song and the vocal kind of holds it back in the middle of the chaos... this combination is bizarre! Not in a bad way, just different. But it tires my ears pretty fast. I know that's just one song and Romeo said the album was composed to be listened to from start to finish, having its different moments, so we'll have to wait and see if this isolated piece fits better into the whole. It's still Symphony X at the core, but as a big fan of the band I hope the rest of the album delivers more.

To those of you complaining...get off your high horse. Bands change and evolve. I personally like it when bands do things differently. If you like music that always sounds the same or like bands that just do the same things over and over again then you're just cheating yourself. This is a great song! Keep in mind also, there are 10 other songs on the album. The bassist says it does have some of the older elements from albums like "Paradise Lost" and "The Odyssey". Don't judge the whole album after hearing only one song....

I'll give credit where credit is due in regards to their older, more original work. But the idea they've withheld about constantly changing their sound is a feat few bands dare to attempt. Had they continued on the same path from day one, no doubt it would get repetitive. Look at Disturbed: they've changed almost nothing in their sound. Many say "Once you've heard one song, you've heard them all." I dont want that for Symphony X. I've got loads of respect for their newest work. Its more Thrash metal-esque, but they've put their own spin on it. It still holds it's own unique sound. I for one hope they continue to move forward and put out music like this.

Rhyming every last line in a song is completely hack. "evermore nevermore" gimme a fucking break. Blowmeo and Allen have been hamming it up for 10+ years.

jnelson316 it seems like they lost their motivation to do anything really good. Paradise Lost was awesome album with this sound and after it received positive ratings, they started to copy-paste it. Iconoclast was example of copying Paradise Lost sound with mediocre content. This song sounds even worse...

The song is based off of the divine comedy, I think it's called, the Dante's inferno thing. Paradise lost was based off of I think Homer's epic story that retold the book of genesis from a different perspective, maybe it's about lucifer, the snake idk.

The sickest part of this song was it took me years and years of listening and I never realized the chorus is in 7/4 time until I pulled up the tab. What have I been doing with my life?! The transition from 8 beats to 7 is so smooth it slipped past me hundreds of times.

Finally, I can have my Symphony X fix, even though they are not the same since they started their blast with The Divine Wings of Tragedy. The raw power and aggressiveness are there. Sir Allen makes use of various facets of his voice, not just his growling-dio-esque from last album. Pretty good. And there are references from old style Symphony X for those who pay attention.

I heard back from Nuclear Blast over the weekend. They said the pre-order for USA hasn’t been announced yet, and it will be announced sometime this week. Shame on the record label for not specifying that above where the pre-order link is posted. I'm sure a ton of fans who didn't know any better paid the $50 instead of waiting for the U.S. pre-order. Very tricky, Nuclear Blast.

I hear the keyboard complaints but am sure they will be prominent in other tunes. But it is the bass that is so muddled and not existent in the mix, granted small computer speakers and compressed audio but hope is is brighter in the mix on the cd. Song is not my favorite the "nevermore's" strike me as a little corny. Michael sounds great throughout. To me is sounds like something off the Odyssey an not all that original. Still can't wait as I know the rest will kick ass and even a mediocre Symph X tune is better than most.

The melodies are very weak. It's a bad sign when you're like, a minute in and you can't be arsed to sit through five more minutes of it. This is a bit too Iconoclast for me. If the whole album is this shit I'll be disappointed but unsurprised. Guess I'll just go back to listening to The Odyssey on repeat then.

I really love SX, but since Paradise Lost i cant help to feel like it has lost some of the juice that makes SX what it was, from this single i can't say that the got it back, i think it's close to the path that made me fall in love with the band, the music is very good though, but it just isn't quite the SX that i enjoyed since the beginning of the band until The Odyssey, i think its almost there, hope that the full album will make me change my mind :D.

Well, this was a surprise! Been waiting for a new Symphony X album and so far, this song sounds worth the wait. I really dig Russell Allen's vocals here, the way he shifts from heavier to more clean singing. Looking forward to the rest of it. By the way, those complaining about Iconoclast, not every album is going to appeal to every fan. It took me some time to warm up to it, unlike how much I instantly fell in love with V: The New Mythology Suite and The Odyssey. And frankly, an okay Symphony X album is still lightyears better than the pop/emo/EDM sludge cluttering the airwaves. Besides, I respect a band willing to try something different, even if it doesn't always work. Poetry for the Poisoned anyone, lol.

divine0enigma You seem to forget that singles are usually songs that are liked by a broader population. And I don't see why you are judging the band after hearing one song. Just because one song sounds a little more mainstream and "generic" than you want it to be doesn't mean they are as a band.

FearTheBlades It only shows that they had no motivation to write good music and that is why it is mediocre. Everytime they release some song, you can tell will it be good or shitty album. Same was with Iconoclast. Iconoclast at the end was mediocre too, received 7.0-8.0/10 ratings in most magazines.
