My old neighbor was in Korea, fought with the Marines there but never said a lot about his service there except about how cold it got there in the winter and about how the enemy would due there " dirty work" at night. He was a good man who I used to drink beers with. His name was Alvin "Bud" Littleton. Miss him. R I P "Bud". 🙏

Sounds like a great bloke😊😊 My uncle was an Australian militia volunteer who fought in Papua New Guinea. He was fighting in the extreme heat and humidity. They were very poorly trained and equipped. He hated and refused to eat butter as they had rancid butter and hard tack biscuits. It went rotten in the tropics really quickly. I don't guess the canned bully beef would have been much better. He was a lovely kind old gentleman. He had a sugar cane farm. He was fairly deaf and my aunty used to nag him incessantly. Uncle Bert was a very gentle hardworking man and very patient,calm and quietly spoken. He would quietly reach up and turn off his hearing aids. And just say yes dear. 😂😂😂 saying that I've seen him deal with a 6 foot taipan snake with a piece of polythene pipe. He was a tough old fella. I really miss him. He was going to teach my brother how to platt a stockwhip but he never got to it. He had been a country fair whip cracker and trick rider in his youth. He and his brother rode around Australia making a living entertaining people

My grandfather found WW2 only time I can recall him saying anything about the war , I was watching TV show MASH in 70s he came in & told me war is nothing like this , he was very stern about it as well

@@matthewcullen1298my grandfather was CMF in Papua before transferring into the AIF fighting in the Japanese in Atipe and Buna. He also didn’t say a lot about the war except for food. He loathed the army’s powered eggs with a passion, but didn’t mind the bully beef and said they even figured out a way to pack extra cans of it into the frames of the 6 pound gun carriages they were hauling through the mountains. He also spoke with awe about boarding a US naval ship once the yanks joined the battle, where the Aussies, straight out of the jungle fighting were served fresh eggs, steak and icecream “as much as you could eat”.

My dad was in that war. He had some harrowing stories to tell as I was growing up. I was 6 years old when he returned from Korea. It had been 2 years since he left and I remember hiding behind my mom because it was like seeing a stranger. God bless all the men who fought and died in that war.

Apart from making directing / producing about 140 movies, John Ford is one of the earliest Naval war reporters who did not just report on conflict - but made a full production out of his endeavors. Making history - whilst filming history.

My uncle Eddie never returned home from Korea. My aunt had a b&w pic of him in his dress uniform on her dresser till the day she passed and never remarried. A lot of women probably experienced similar faits. We will never forget.

My father was a sergeant and squad leader of 3rd squad, 3rd platoon, Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He was wounded 4 times received 1 Purple Heart. Received the Marine Corps medal of Merit for treating his wounded men, tho severely wounded himself and refusing evacuation until his men were evacuated. He never talked about combat, but would talk about some things. Like bumping into General MacArthur on a muddy road close to the front lines. I read a quote from a captured North Korean colonel that says it all. “ My men would tremble at the thought of facing the United States Marines.”

My Uncle Harry Bland was in first Marines, was wounded, and received the Purple Heart, but I don't know what company he was in. I am looking for ways to figure that out. I know he was wounded on December 3rd 1950 in Hagagu-ri, at the Chosin Reservoir.

My father was there terribly wounded, but lived to have a family and a son (me) ,in the first groups of us army soldiers sent to slow the advance, motor man sole survivor of his team. Died 2005 I am still terribly sad, but also so proud and great full.

Back in high school, we had a vet come in and talk to us. He was one of the machine gunners on the trucks by the Yalu river across from China, and he talked to us about his experiences in the war, he had said that originally he wasn't supposed to be the gunner, but his friend had gotten shot so he took over the machine gun, and he said it was literally like seeing waves of people as far as he could see! I can't remember exactly what else he had said, but he was an older gentleman, and this was maybe about 5-7 years ago if I recall correctly, I hope he's still around.. RIP to all of our VETS especially the forgotten ones, Korea, and Vietnam... Vietnam vets are starting to get the recognition they deserve, but Korea was overshadowed by WWII if your a vet and you read this, thank you for your service, and please know that we thank you for your sacrifices you've made for all of us. GOD BLESS OUR VETS

"The Forgotten War" was a media term. There were 36,516 men killed in Korea in 3 years, 1 month and 2 days...no one forgets that.

It is bizarre how so many have forgotten it. The Korean War was a conflict that changed the entire world, not just the two countries or the United States. It set the stage for the true Cold War, introduced jet warfare, introduced the idea of the UN as a true peacekeeping force, and affected the attitudes and minds of countless peoples around the globe toward Communism or against it (the actor Sir Michael Caine was a British soldier in it, and credits the horrors he experienced/witnessed for making him become disillusioned with the Marxist ideology). It literally was the beginning of the world we know today, in so many ways. Hands down the most influential conflict of the 20th Century apart from the two World Wars.

Our uncle lost his leg at Chosin Reservoir. He was 19 years old, a new catcher for St Louis Cardinals, got called up to the Marine Reserve..lost his leg and never got to play in the Big Leagues.. true story.

it was never forgotten by the men who fought there and the Koreans that lived though it. My granddad was there 2nd infantry division(Indian head) fought and survived bloody ridge and heartbreak ridge. He passed Jan 27 2020. He told me stories up until he passed.

No doubt heroism is common in mankind. Never forget the people within or without an uniform. At this time my grandpa was a mechanic at Taszár (Hungary) in a Soviet airfield. His father (my great grandpa) were deported and killed by the Soviets in the last year of WW2. My great grandpa was never conscripted, he was a railroad worker. My great grandpa's brother were in Canada in this time, because he emigrated at the great depression.

My childhood friends father was a Korean war hero. I read an article they had that described how he, Sargent Smallwood, commandeered a locomotive and rescued some villagers from the communists while taking heavy machinegun fire. He described how he just pulled the throttle wide open and lay on the floor with bullets ripping through the engine.

What a change today in Korea after 70 years! Korea has become one of the most advanced nation in the world. It is simply a miracle to transform the war torn country to the country of technology, finance and lately leading world entertaining industry. Once both Korea reunited not in distant future the synergy effect of reunification can double or even triple the speed of advancing the nation to top five richest countries in all aspects in the world. I will continue to watch this wonderful country's ability of achieving its goals announced by the most democratically elected Korean government.

My Dad was on tthe ocean aboard USS SAINT PAUL CA-73, An uncle on the ground in 2ND ARMY INFANTRY and two other uncle's in the ARMY AIR FORCE over Korea and all made it back in one piece and die old men. All from San Antonio Texas !

Times were hard in the 50’s. It was a police action. My grandfather lost left leg in Korean War. He was under the general. Let’s be grateful.

Dad had a hell of a time there in combat as an Infantry squad leader. He said that this was a no bullshit combat zone. Dad got 3 Purple Hearts there along with 3 Bronze Stars with Valor. Bless Dad's luck. Looks like I had it fucking easy in Panama 1989-90 and my Iraq tour from 2006-08. Dad's generation had full on combat just as bad as WWII when he first experienced combat in 1944-45 in the ETO in Belgium and into Germany. Interesting thing is that the first part where the 1st Navy Division is 'advancing into the other direction', apparently seems to be North Korea, which means that this footage could be the very last record of US Military force residing in that region. Also it would be the very last time when those humble villagers in the North have enjoyed freedom and security in the last 60 years. Too sad that those villagers were destined to live under the crazy Kims.

The US Army has done lots of unnecessary attrocities during the Cold War, namely Vietnam, but the Korean War was an exception. It was necessary and it was heroic. It was even sacrificial since the U.S. would have had no problem without Korea. I was born and raised in South Korea, and I'll have my self clear, I don't want to live under Kim Dynasty under no circumstances. If it were not for the U.S. Kim Il Sung would have unified Korea, and that would be as dark as hell.

The war could have been done faster and more effective (Pro-South Korea, USA, NATO outcome) if it weren't for the Ordinance department, bureaucracy, and more. Mag-fed garands and or m14's chambered in .277 could have enhanced our small arms capabilities. They are JUST now doing something similar with .277 sig fury about 80 years after the garands trials where Douglas McArthur had the brilliant idea of "bIgGeR bUlLeT bEtTeR"

An Australian newsreel from 1950 I saw recently stated an even bigger fear: If Stalin and Mao's evil "experiment" of Communist conquest through faction warfare succeeded, they would try it endlessly everywhere possible on earth. Although they did still try it in places (like Vietnam), the Communist failure in Korea forced them to reconsider their ambitions. Plus, it shattered the Communist invincibility myth, which was CRITICAL.

The communist dictatorship was already established with Soviet help before 1950. And was well supplied militarily. Their attack on the south and subsequent defeat could have ushered in a new era for the north. But the Chinese intervened and another two and a half years of war and destruction followed. North Korea has been in the grip of a selfish hereditary clique for over 70 years. The people have been throttled and the economy looted and grossly mismanaged by this parasite clique. South Korea has not had that kind of evil on their backs.

@@bentbej1873 The small number of U.S. Troops are there as a visible "Tripwire" warning that if the north attack's again the United States will defend the south. Personally I doubt the north could get very far anyway. Even in 1950 the north lost attack momentum for several days as their troops started looting the Seoul area. And Seoul was much smaller and poorer then. Imagine those backwards and hungry North Korean's emerging into the vast modern and wealthy Seoul and environs. They would be in shock at the realization of the lies they'd been told. They would also lose all discipline as they started gorging on the food and stealing things. One thing I don't get is your reference to "how would we feel if Russian Soldier's were still in Washington after WWII". The Russians never defended the US or had troop's in America. I think you need to do some independent research and get free of a lot of falsehoods and partial truths you may have been taught.

And that Angel Soldier or Marine at 22:24 giving candy that feeling for him i bet made his tour all worth to see that difference from scared to smiling happy kids! That Marine was a smart fellow too. He realized that he needed to eat a piece of it himself in front of them so the kids would trust the candy to be safe (heaven knows what they had been through). Once they saw him do it, then they joyfully pounced on it together. An absolutely beautiful moment of humanity in the midst of all the great tragedy and destruction.

More than you know when the British army withdrew the Vickers MG , The Royal armouries fired one for a week! more than 4000000 rounds (swapping barrels) and when finished they stripped it down and checked tolerances and all parts were still inside tolerance . Those things were made to last .

Actually I served around the area, so I know Seolma-ri where British Gloucestershire Regiment fought against the Chinese army very fiercely, delaying their attack for three days.If it had not been for British regiment, British troops and we couldn't help it by the Chinese continuous attack. Because I learned from many data as to Seolmari battle, the important role the British Gloucestershire Regiment played was invaluable in war history.

Even as an American, I could not agree more! Ethiopians were darn good warriors too. Each country present did their part. The North Koreans and especially Communist Chinese were insane in their aggression, took brave men everywhere to stop their attacks. Thank Heaven we managed to preserve South Korea from that evil and give those people hope for the future (and gave the monsters Kim and Mao a good hard punch).

My dad knew all about Korea. How we gained ground, then allowed the Chinese to chase us back across the DZ. My dad said the whole campaign was a FARCE. We didnt do anything but made mistakes by listening to others and not doing what we should have done. In the end we tucked tail and ran away. Just like Vietnam.

Times were so different back then. There was the good and the bad just like now. The one thing that stands out was how the people back then thought and talked different. There was that patriotism that I rarely see today. Morals were so clear and defined as well. Some of it good as I said, some of it today would be considered bad.
