The ubiquitous aircraft carriers of the U.S. Navy attack in the Central Pacific Ocean at the Gilbert and Marshall islands, destroying Japanese installations. But for all of these, there is a price to pay for victory.

The sailor in the plane buried at sea was Aviation Machinist Mate (Gunner) 2nd Class Loyce Deen.

At time 22:50 you see a hero. The aircraft has just crash landed, erupts in flames and the Sailor runs around the flames to help the aircrew. Unselfish devotion to duty right there. Most civilians run away from danger. A warrior runs to it.

I'm really curious about that cat. Certainly there has to be documentation about the honors he received for that act of valor. Alas, I couldn't find anything in 5 minutes of searching.

"O, God, We pray thee, that the memory of our comrades, fallen in battle, be ever sacred in our hearts And that the sacrifice, which they have offered for our country’s cause, may be acceptable in thy sight. And my this Sailor, find repose, with the plane in which he gave his life, that we might live. Into thy hands, O lord, we commend the soul of thy servant departed, now called unto eternal rest And we commit his body, to the deep. "

I grew up watching these. Every one of the guys in these were & still are my boyhood heros. Now I'm in my 60's & it saddens me to know even the ones who survived this are gone now. Maybe it brings my own mortality more into focus. I hope I get to meet these guys in Heaven. God bless each & every one of them. 🫡 🇺🇸

Amazing photography by Navy cameramen. One had to have nerves of steel on that carrier targeted by one of those enemy dive bombers 19:17 Plane breaks up; catches fire and hits the water next to the carrier.

That Japanese plane could actually have been a kamikaze. I think the footage might be from a later Victory at Sea that was primarily about massive kamikaze attacks.

I get such a kick when they refer to a carrier as a floating city. Even when I served 40 years ago life aboard ship was basically hard labor 12 hours a day 7 days a week for as many as 9 months at a time and the entire crew were men. At times there was not a woman within a thousand miles. Some city.
