Absolutely delightful. I'm really into expressive controllers, especially the LinnStrument. I saw someone playing a sax inspired controller on tiktok (NuRad) and that lead me to Neil Steiner. I'm really amazed at how expressive Nyle was making synthesizers sound in the 80s. Thanks for keeping the legacy alive! I was surprised at how many secret expressive controls are packed in there.

As a brass player (mostly French horn and trumpet) and a longtime synthesist/keyboardist/pianist, this is exactly the kind of controller I've been looking for. I could imagine controlling a deep digital synth with one of these allowing an exceptional level of expression. The Yamaha VL-70m virtual acoustic tone generator (an affordable, stripped-down version of the rare and expensive VL1) comes to mind, as it had a direct input for the WX series of wind controllers. Another interesting synth to control would be the Kawai K5000s, which is additive. You could control the harmonics and the 128-band formant filter via MIDI to add impossible forms of expression.

It really is a wonderful instrument. And I have played those synths with it (not the K5000's -- but similar additive). And formants are MAGIC with this approach. Good stuff! excellent overview. i'm excited to start putting money away for it in the near future.i do have to plead for an analog sensor CV option. it sounds fantastic over MIDI and i know that's fine for 99% of situations but i'd love to have my wind synth interface directly and immediately with my modular to pick up higher frequency air/voice effects. i might try to modify my Roland AE-10 for it eventually, but there's no promise that i can safely locate the sensor taps and squeeze a buffer circuit and jacks in there. and anyway, i really hope to have an actual EVI as my primary controller eventually, so i'm putting my voice out here on it now. thank you to the steiner guys and everyone with a hand in this project.

Thanks so much! I’m quite into modular and CV myself. You’ll be happy to know the hardware is already wired for a future software update that will give you access to CV on the NuEVI. I am with you on how important it is, as is Johan, the creator of the NuEVI. He really is into the true VCO analog sound and a huge fan of the Crumar EVI and it’s rich VCO sound. This instrument is so great and will in time do this and give you all the technology reach you need for samples, models, digital synths and direct analog interface. Let others know about the NuEVI, it’s the way to go, and I am way picky. Thanks! :)

Does it have a bite sensor in the mouthpiece like the EWI and can be used for vibrato in addition to the pitchbend or vibriato with the thumb under the keys?

It does have a bite sensor. You can't directly set it for vibrato, but in Logic, for instance, you could remap it to do that. There is an EWI version coming out soon (the NuRAD). Because bite vibrato is so important for that kind, we did a lot of testing, research and improving on the bite part and it will have THE smoothest, nicest bite available. Because vibrato is so important. On the NuEVI it mainly just adjust the portamento... which is great but the bite is just changing a rate of change, and not the tone directly. So it is just great for that as it is.

Hi, Mark -- I enjoyed your overview of the NuEVI. I'm curious what choir patch you used at 14:29, as well as, what horn section patch Nyle used at 15:00? Both sound incredible!

The Choir Patch is the ** ASTOUNDING ** sample instrument called "Symphonic Choirs" by East-West ... it's a technological miracle... worth reading up on. A milestone in sample engineering and sound engineering in general. Respect to East-West talent and brain power.

At 15:00, that is a multi-layer's grouping I made on the fly from many sounds in Logic Pro ... just factory presets I put on different tracks all with different panning and effects to differentiate.
