The original was recorded by Michael Massay on a Roland SCC1 sound card. This song was created by Bobby Prince using MIDI software for ID software on the game "DOOM". This was my remake of this original song by Bobby Prince.

“It’s only natural to imitate success. Throughout history, there are countless examples of clones, shameless mimics that ride aboard the coattails of others. Call it inspiration, a homage, or just a plain ripoff, no good idea goes without a few retreads. On rare occasions, a game’s influence will be such that it not only inspires a few imitations, but forge an entirely new genre. *_’DOOM’_* is a massively important step in the development of 3D action games, one that defined the first person shooter, and changed gaming forever.” -Stuart “Ahoy” Brown

It's not about cloning success. It's about cloning quality. Because of quality there is success. If we plan to clone success instead of working on quality, we'll fail. Bobby Prince did not clone success of bands. He used parts and elements of popular tracks to clone and emphasize the atmosphere. Andrew here felt the same and perfectly used the modern era tools.

I'll never forget the first time I made it to this map as a kiddo back in 1997. Up until then I'd had a fun time slaughtering demons and breezing through levels while jamming out to the MIDI rock songs. Then this map loads and I'm standing off on one side of a pit of acid, and this song hits me like a semi truck. Before I could fully take in the sudden shift from rock n' roll to gloom and despair, I'm immediately assaulted by invisible pinkies for the first time ever. My poor 9 year old brain just could not wrap itself around that idea, and it caused me to panic. I remember taking a couple shots with my shotgun but quickly realized that I would be overwhelmed by the invisible pinkies and ended up fleeing past the acid pool and deeper into the level. While sprinting to get away from them I was swarmed by even more enemies. My death came very swiftly, and in that moment I realized that I truly was alone and doomed. Having experienced my first death in Doom on this very depressing map, my views shifted. I had thought that Doom was a thrilling slaughterfest, killing demons while jamming out to rock music. I realized that there was a reason why I was supposed to be killing them so ruthlessly and mercilessly. It wasn't to get a high score or body count. No, I was fighting for my very life. I hit the reload button and started the map again. I refused to let the game break me, and I got a hell of a lot more brutal with them.

This is incredible. E1M5 always resonated with me. This perfects everything about it. The first part of the song is the slow revelation of something horrific unfolding… like the serial killer showing up in your living room… or the crazy demonic drowned ghost girl crawling out of your TV… then the Metal hits, and whatever it is, realizes it came into the wrong goddamned room.

This is the kind of theme that starts to make you feel hopeless, that regardless of how many demons you kill, there will be another legion to take their place. That you, like all you stand for, are destined to die off, and accept the defeat of the human race. But then the song gives you the twist, it pushes you further, it gives you the power you need to slay the demonic forces and fight until they all die, or you die. I gotta say, this is one hell of a masterpiece.

@crashingblow3753

You know. I like this a lot! I like how the first few levels are these intense, blood pumping, hyping metal tracks that get the player hooked into the game, they are jamming, having lots of fun, having a great time, and then later the music in later levels begin to give off a feeling of horror. I feel like that must have been done on purpose. Have the first songs make the player feel like they are invincible and they have nothing to fear, only to later shock them with horror music to catch the player off guard and make them feel nervous. As if they slowly begin to realize that they may not be as invincible as they thought they were. It gives almost like a false sense of security, only to then sucker punch you with the scary stuff. I kind of like it more when DooM is trying to have a combination of action and horror rather than just being plain action like the new Doom games (Doom 2016 & Eternal), or just plain horror like Doom 3 tried to be. Not that there is anything wrong with Doom 2016 and Eternal, in fact they are really fantastic games, but I love the feeling the classic games give off more. You feel invincible because you have these super cool weapons, from a pistol to a shotgun, to a rocket launcher, the plasma rifle, to the BFG 9000, and your character is super strong and fast, but at the same time there are these scary monsters prowling around waiting for you to arrive at the room they are hiding in and assault you, so you still keep your guard up and look around checking every corner for demons, and listening for any growling or screeching of any demons nearby. I just love this feeling of feeling badass at first, then realizing the seriousness of the situation I'm in.

I love the gliding strings! What did you use for those? Also what did you use for the choirs? Sounds like Voxos. And when the song turns metal, holy shit. I think my face melted.

Andrew, this is fantastic. I think you could make it even better, and more foreboding by simply reducing the tempo by 10% or so.

Its just you versus the hoard There's many of them and they're everywhere No matter how many you kill in the next room there's just even more But you're the Doom Guy So you keep killing demons until there's no more to kill

Awesome work by the end of the song i was just Breathless is amazing how good turn out this particular tune, for me the most of the Doom songs are plain Metal but songs like this give depth to play doom and you just perfected a Classic track like this, thank you.
