Btw the plane wasn't pitching up or down because your main wings were working against the elevators. for some reason the medium wings have their pitch inverted .I'm pretty sure this only happens on the medium size wings because it doesn't happen on large or small. It could also have to do with where the wings are in relation to the CoM.

Yup. I noticed this midway through one of the SSTO flights and I think you can briefly see me turning off pitch control on the main wings, need to change that in the VAB though so the change applies permanently!

Wings shouldn't have pitch enabled _at all._ If you have pitch on and they do deflect in the same direction as the elevators, they push you into the ground like spoilers in exchange for very little pitch authority. Control surfaces in wings should only be used as ailerons and then manually deployed to use as flaps (to get more lift in exchange for slight pitch down moment) or spoilers (the reverse).

Nice plane however I have a few tips as someone who has made Stock English Electric Lightnings before. -Use Fully moving wings for the horizontal stabalizers -Use Single fuselage parts stacked ontop of eachother and slightly clipped into eachother for the fuselage -Use wing peices to cover the middle and make a smooth surface -Use two shock cone intakes angled into eachother and pushed back on the front -Use a drouge parachute on the rear bottom -Id reccomend putting some extra gear peices in the wings for stability while taking off and landing. Also I would like to say thanks for thinking my previous Vanilla Lightning in KSP 1 was cool. ;)

In my younger days I went to many an air show and Duxford was on the cards several times a year, so I have seen that particular Lightning. It was the fastest thing I have ever seen moving (I have seen the Blackbird in flight but it was over the air base {Mildenhall or Lakenheath I cant remember} so it was restricted with how fast it could go, although the Blackbird did give off the biggest afterburner flame I have seen. So a tie in with Matt's vid aswell. I can say I have been on Concord but that was the static display at Duxford :P. I was familiar with the Walter "Taffy" Holden story.

in KSP1 to get the clipped-delta wing shape of the Lightning what I had to do was use 3 pieces - the inner section (before the crank) leads to a standard flat wingtip. The second section was essentially reduced to a triangle, and the 3rd was to extend off that to create the flat-trailing-edge for the ailerons. The big trick is remembering that it's *basically* a delta wing, but with a big chunk out of the inner chord. Also, I'll note that - maybe it's a quirk of FAR on KSP1, but I found the vertically stacked engines, high narrow wing and low horizontal stabs was extremely effective and easy to get going REALLY fast

An interesting detail about the IRL Lightning: it's a notched delta wing so the control surfaces are on the outer edge, though I'm guessing this can't be done easily/at all with the parts you have.

Your story about Taffy Holden is slightly inaccurate. He didn't accidentally start the engines. That part was intentional. So, the truth. This happened at RAF Lyneham, where they had a number of aircraft stored. This was in the final days of Lyneham as they were shutting the base down, so each of these aircraft that were being stored had been brought out of storage, been subjected to the required maintenance and testing to get them ready for flight, and then flown out to other bases. XM135 (Holden's Lightning) was the last aircraft to leave before the base could be closed down, so obviously there was some time pressure at play here. Well, during the testing on XM135 they found that it had an electrical fault with one of the inverters that would only manifest itself at high engine power. They'd had test pilots do several fast taxi runs on the aircraft to find this, and to check if it had been fixed. This just involved starting the aircraft on the runway, pushing the power up to the maximum power setting before afterburner, letting the aircraft roll 30-40 yards or so, checking to see if the offending inverter cut out, then pulling the power back and getting on the brakes. Anyways, after the last run by a test pilot, it was found the issue still persisted. So, they took the aircraft back in, did some more work to rectify it, and then needed it to be checked again to prove the issue was now solved. Unfortunately it turned out there were now no test pilots available for another week, remember, we're now holding up the closure of the base. It was suggested that since this test wouldn't involve actually flying, and would only involve travelling 40 or so yards down the runway, Taffy could conduct it, since he had previous experience taxiing aircraft (albeit it much lower powered aircraft) It was agreed that that was how they'd proceed. They did I think a couple of runs successfully, unfortunately on the last run Taffy pushed the throttles a little too far forward, which engaged the afterburners, and locked the throttles past the afterburner gate. On the backside of the throttles there's a couple of levers for want of a better way of describing them which you have to push down to allow the throttles to be pulled out of afterburner, unfortunately, Taffy either didn't know this, or didn't have time to remember it. As he was running down the runway under power air traffic, believing he was going to travel no more than 40 yards or so, cleared a fuel bowser to cross the runway much further down. Taffy spotted this, and instinctively reacted by pulling back on the stick to miss the bowser..... and... well... then he was flying a Mach 2 capable interceptor..... without a canopy (had been removed for maintenance)...... The damage that occurred on landing wasn't too the parachutes, it was to the tail of the aircraft. The aircraft Taffy had flown previously were what is known as tail draggers, meaning they have 2 main wheels forward, under the wing, and one smaller wheel under the tail, rather than the tricycle arrangement of the lightning, where you have a nose wheel forward, and 2 main wheels under the wings. On landing Taffy instinctively tried to put the tail wheel on the ground, unfortunately, since the lightning doesn't have a tail wheel that meant scraping the tail down the runway.

LABS or Over-the-Shoulder-Bombing was / is the maneuver for jet pilots to atleast have a change for life after deploying a gravity dropped nuclear bomb. For sure an Lightning would be an ideal platform for it.

The way the window were done it KSP 1 worked perfectly well. The internal view was rendered over the part rendering. This meant any clipped parts would not be visible inside the cockpit, the only flaw was that the internal view would be over top of all parts, not just the cockpits/pods.

I think the devs should add the draggable nodes on the wings from b9 procedural wings. They made it much easier to figure out the wing shape you want, especially with the new orthographic blueprint mode. Sliders and manually entering values have their place but it can be significantly faster to just use sliders. I know this is low priority. For know ill leave it to modders or I might figure it out myself.

Your problem is your control surfaces. Your ailerons should only control roll but you have them set to roll and elevator.

This does get fixed I think I show it very briefly! I turn off pitch control on them I think for the first ssto attempt, as I noticed I’d forgotten to do that while in the VAB, flies pretty well regardless anyway :p
