Chad - I hear you when you say "fuck you you fuckin nerd" to folks who slow down for trucks, but I have 100% been in a situation where I am behind a massive line of left lane bandits and a truck driver is in the right lane attempting to abide by the correct flow of traffic and I have definitely slowed down to let them in. As someone who has studied traffic patterns and considers driving a hobby (motorcyclist, track days, autocross, etc) and someone who logs about 30,000 miles per year, it truly is the overall flow of traffic that dictates how effectively every driver is able to travel. An example of this is the zipper-effect-- when people do not use cruise control (or simply travel a consistent speed) on the highway and constantly fluctuate speed, especially with congestion, this will lead to large traffic jams. A way to alleviate is by slowing down, leaving tons of room in front of you, and attempting to continuously creep forward at a constant speed and not come to a stop. You will notice (if you ever try that) when you do that, congestion around you will ease significantly and much faster than if you ride the bumper of the car in front of you, constantly starting and stopping. My logic when slowing down for trucks is that the net benefit you provide to the flow of traffic is greater than continuing in my "earned" position. I am in no way calling you entitled, and you were completely in the right with the original truck situation you spoke about, but this concept of "earned" positions isn't necessarily factual. Lane etiquette does exist for the benefit of traffic flow, but I always consider the net benefit to that flow when determining if I should yield or continue. Anywho, that's my rant on traffic flow.
