Michelle, you have asked us from time to time to share tips and mine today might not be a new one, but it fits in with this video somewhat. I have discovered that by adding 2 teaspoons of isopropyl alcohol to a full mister bottle, my seams press flatter than using just water. I no longer use any pressing products when pressing my seams as I’m building blocks. It leaves no stain, in case you might be wondering. Thanks for all your tips! I look forward to your videos each week!

Great video that keeps us mindful of the costs of quilting. I hand quilt my quilts. This saves me hundreds of dollars and I justify the time it takes as it is thousands of my tiny, loving stitches. Also, I frequent the thrift store for men’s shirts. I can get almost a yard of excellent quality fabric from an XXL shirt. These have been washed so I know there will be no running of reds or dark colors.

Love this! Haha, I decided that I didn't need to buy any fabrics for a while after taking a good look at the all the gorgeous fabrics I've purchased over the last few years thinking how wonderful they would each be in this or that project. The reality is that I would have to quit working and do nothing but sew all day everyday for a long, long time to get it all done! That doesn't even include the scraps! l have saved so much moolah this past year and still have so much fabric (and all the rest of the accessories you mentioned) I could keep it going for another year at least! Lol, and each newly finished quilt or bag creates new scraps! (Admittedly if I see some precious fabric while I'm picking up batting, I will buy it before it's gone forever - then only to be found on etsy)

I keep a notebook of planned projects. When there is a sale, I try to buy enough fabric to make that project. Right now, I'm wrestling with too little yardage, leftover blocks, and some background I bought by the bolt (on sale) to make the pieced back for a quilt. 😊

I've been quilting over twenty years self taught. I've never bought pre-cut fabrics, speciality rulers, patterns, in fact I didn't even know the terms they use for different precut fabric sizes until about ten years after I started to quilt. . lol I have an old sewing machine but don't have sewing machine that can do quilting either. All my quilts are hand quilted. I normally finish average 4 twin size bed spreads per year and small floor mats, bags etc,, Sometimes I wish I had sewing machine to do quilting because I have so many projects I'dike to do.. but for me sewing machine w/ quilting function is an expensive item. I only throw away if the fabric is smaller than 1 inch because I use lots of fabrics are about an inch sizes. Wadding, thread and backing, I have no choice but purchase them. Usually I stick to neutral colour of threads and backings. I'm sure many of us save and collect bottons, zippers from old shirts and dresses when we are done with them. I keep old clothes cut in 10" or 2.5", 5" width strips. Some bed sheets are perfect to use for inners when making bags, outdoor BBQ table clothes, table mats. Quilting gives me a great pleasure in my busy life and looking forward to be able to do more in my retirement. Happy quilting to all! ❤️

Good video about quilting stash isn't just fabric. I unsubscribed to emails for many fabric companies and shops. I do like to see new fabric lines but have way too much fabric, tools, and patterns. Am trying to support local quilt shops within 50 mile radius and not large companies. Am trying to cut simple quilt kits from stash and panels are great kit starters. I also have wayyyyy to many patterns downloaded on computer. Need to purge some of those and only keep favorites. Love your channel.

I’m now trying to use my stash and purchase only additional fabric needed to compete the project--no more buying “just because”-I need to have a plan for using anything I buy (although I still occasionally buy an “inspirational” fabric that I love and pan a quilt around its colors/motifs--most of which I have in my stash already-I’m striving to have only as much fabric as I can easily access…no more rummaging thru Rubbermaid containers-I even keep my small scrap in plastic bags or see-thru bins

Great suggestions Michelle! It's so easy to forget what we have or to think we need the latest and greatest. I find for me, my #1 tip for saving money is to just stop looking at Facebook and watching KZbin quilting videos. I get sucked into new Sew Alongs requiring the purchase of new patterns, fabric, and supplies. I made a list of all the projects that I need to start or that are in process to be completed and I was astonished by how many I have! I keep that list handy now so that when I feel the urge to order more, I just look at my To Do list. Also, there are tons of FREE quilt patterns out there. And finally, there's one thing I've learned - I'm not going to die if I don't get the latest fabric before it sells out, because there will always be plenty more in the future that I will love just as much, LOL!

For the past two years, I have decluttered my sewing room starting on New Year’s Day - setting a timer for 15 minutes. I only do 15 minutes a day. The first year took me quite a while as the room was a huge mess, but last year was very easy to do as I had not brought a lot of new things into the room. My room is much more manageable and a welcoming place to sew. I certainly agree with sewing from your stash. It’s amazing what you find when you organize your fabrics. I only go fabric shopping when I’m looking for a specific fabric that I don’t have in my stash and it has saved me so much money.

Fat quarters today started a free block of the month Christmas quilt that also is totally free. You of course can buy their fabric but I use my own to get some of my stash used. If you look others do free quilts too and it’s a lot of fun and I use my own fabric. The best thing is stash sewing, just got out fabrics for a new quilt, I buy panels that can be cut up and used in the centre of a themed quilt today I will be using 3 of the blocks that have lovely sayings for someone who loves gardening and left over jelly roll and some sample pieces, our local shop have same fabrics and if you manage to get all the sample are from the same line a beautiful quilt with a background added makes a beautiful quilt. Just finished one with Japanese style fabrics using black for sashing and only had to buy for outer boarder and found the perfect backing that I had beenoving around for years wondering why on earth had I bought it but was perfect. Check your stash first, my sewing room in organised chaos, stated by friend who throws her hands up in despair but can't understand how I can quickly find the right fabric nearly every time. I coordinate 2 quilting groups that sew a lot of charity quilts so often looking for that perfect fabric to finish, usually scrappy quilt. I must admit that I bought a lot of fabric from shops that was closing and ended up with 70 spools of thread from one where I had a $70 credit so the shop assistant suggested I redeem it in thread.

Using up the scraps! I went through my patterns and online to find patterns that have a lot of the same size and shaped pieces that I want make. I now cut my scraps into those shapes and sizes that I need for the 8 patterns I want to make. Strings and crumbs are sorted by color to make 4 more patterns that I like. This way I can slowly acquire the pieces I need for these projects and I am working on my main projects. It keeps in leaders and enders for chain piecing, easy sewing when I don't want to think to much, and I am using up all the fabric I have already acquired. I also keep an eye out for high quality used cotton top sheets and quilting fabric yardage at my local thrift shops for backings.

I worked in fabric retail management in both big box and independent stores for over 35 years. You can imagine the stash I accumulated. I was a garment sewist who later on included quilting in my sewing. My stash became overwhelming and so I donated at least 75 % of it to schools, nursing homes, sewing friends ECT. It's quite freeing and the occasional times I purchase a new piece or two, there's no guilt.

My #1 thing I am doing to save money is to make fewer quilts but take my time and enjoy the process of making fewer quilts better. I am living in the moment and enjoying it rather than rushing from project to project. With fewer projects, I spend less money. Years ago I got bit by the quilting bug and I was obsessed with quilting. I made SO MANY quilts. they were mostly relatively fast and easy. I loved the planning, cutting, and sewing the blocks. and then I rushed through all the rest to get the project done and move onto the next and the next and the next. Then I moved and had no space for all the stuff and destashed everything Now I am back to having plenty of space for quilting. I even have plenty of space for a large stash. But the second thing I am doing is only buying what I need for a particular project I am making. I am not buying everything that looks pretty that I might want some day. I am just buying what I need for a given project.

I work at JoAnn's and almost all of my stash is remnants. Cheap, less than a yard, but they really do add up in space and money. I also inherited a ton of thread that I still use (I know I shouldn't but I hate throwing things away.) For a lot of projects where you don't see the stitching I will use what ever I have on the bobbins and then use the right thread for top stitching, like when I make bookmarks or two-sided napkins. I recently did a scrapy four patch quilt top with white squares in between the blocks. For the patches I used what ever thread because of the different fabrics. It feels so good to use up spools and bobbins.

Thank you for this wonderful video.I do not really have a money saving tip--just a few comments. I really appreciate this video! I am a beginning quilter. I have sewn for many years and am just now seeing what a nice hobby quilting is--not to mention that my daughters love homemade quilts for their beds. You are speaking to my heart because as a new quilter it is difficult to find information and quilt classes that help with minimalist quilting. You mentioned that you can square up log cabins, half square triangles, flying geese without special rulers and tools, but every class and video is promoting these tools, so it is difficult for the new quilter on a budget. Do you have a resource that shows how to square up squares, half square triangles and flying geese using the large ruler that you mentioned in the video? I would love to see it if you do. As the new quilter I really fight the urge to buy expensive fabric. I practice all of my blocks ahead of time on old sheets, inexpensive fabric and I have made quilts from inexpensive fabrics too. Then I purchase only what I really need. Whenever I get really tempted to buy a special ruler or kit, or scissors, I pull out the treasured quilts that my grandma made on her featherweight and pieced beautifully without the gadgets and remind myself that the gadgets didn't make the quilt----an amazing lady with love in her heart did and that is the quilt that I treasure. I am off topic, but again--thank you for this video--it spoke to my heart in so many ways.

Christie, I do have a play list for beginners so you might want to check that out. The 8 1/2 x 24 1/2 ruler can be used to make tons and tons of blocks. I will put out a video tomorrow that will show how to use a plain ruler to make a flying geese block. You might want to watch that also. I have show how to make half square triangles with a basic ruler also. I will keep your comments in mind and perhaps I will make a video on using the ruler mentioned above to make a few simple blocks. Thank for watching and taking the time to comment!

They often have good deals and promotions and new fabric lines... It is all so very temping. So univers i need or résolu want a specific collection i try not To shop. I feel that i can waste a lot time just shopping for fabric on line. I would rather je quilting. Number two is about bag making. I have a question about buying fabric online. I see many beautiful colors and patterns but how do I know if the color I see on a lighted computer screen will be the same as when I receive it? You seem to be really confident in buying online
@thesimplequilter7499
@thesimplequilter7499 Жыл бұрын
Kathleen, I have ordered a fabric and then had to reorder because of the color showing online. That has only happened a couple of times though. I like certain designers and I am familiar with their color palettes. Often times their fabric lines coordinate from year to year. Also, I have a tendency to reorder fabrics online that I have and just need a little more of it. I guess there is always a risk. The technology is so much better today, I don't think the colors will be way off. If you are looking to match something you are using, I would say you might want to buy that in person if possible. I hope this helps! I do try to support local quilt shops when possible. Ordering online really saves me time and that is a driving force for me right now. I have to drive 40-50 miles each way to get to a local fabric shop and that can end up taking several hours of my time. But again, I do try to support local shops. I do take my quilts to local long armers for quilting! In fact, I will be taking a couple of quilts to one in just a bit!

The number one thing I do to save money is go with a friend to the fabric store and dream about the next project. If I am shopping on line an I know I don't really need a fabric that I fell in love with. I do not purchase it right away. I wait and see if in a day or two I really still want it or not. Most of the time I have moved on to looking at a different fabric and end up not buying either.

I don't usually take on any commissioned work, but occasionally I will as a favor for a close friend or family member. They have to purchase the materials needed (if I don't already have them), and my rule is that I get to keep the scraps, which sometimes can be rather large pieces. I've been able to expand my stash, and with patterns that I might not typically pick out so it definitely adds variety to other projects without costing me any money out of pocket... at least not my pocket!

When i retired 5 years ago, i decided to put myself on a $100 dollar allowance per month. My hobby is sewing, and i have several machines. That leaves my allowance for fabric, notions, tools, and books. I feel this has helped me save money as i really do stick to my budget. Some months i feel i could use more and other months im ok! When i worked, i really had no accountability and am sure i overspent. I do look for sales and specials and pretty much do not pay full price for fabric. I also realize i probably wont ever sew up all my stash and im ok with that too!

Thank you so very much for your videos! I’ve been guilty for years of buying more than I use. You get so busy buying more than you can make that you kind of leave the old favorite fabrics and tools behind because you’re so busy supporting the industry and all the current trends. I appreciate the reminder to use what I have. I have more than plenty. Have you done a video on washing your quilts so that there is minimal bleeding especially while using hand died fabrics such as batiks? Thanks again!

Men’s cotton shirts are a good inexpensive source of fabric - especially the large and extra large sizes. Sometimes you can find them cheaply in thrift stores or you can get them for free if you put out the word to your friends and relatives that you are collecting them.

I definitely agree with all above and this video. I have impulse bought patterns and rulers as well as fabric. Now that I have kind of defined the type of quilts I like to make and I love scrappy quilts, I gladly take other people's leftovers, use the rulers I have and have sworn off buying patters or books. I have enough supplies, fabric and patterns to last a good while. My biggest wxpense now is occasional backing for large quilts and machine maintenance. I free motion quilt all my quilts. Getting better with cost saving in this wonderful hobby!

Great Information. I constantly buy new material and I am going in the hole fast. Thank you for this. I live in Paducah, and shop at Hancocks when I have to. I purchase from Fat quarter shop and Missouri Star and Shabby Fabrics. Shabby has the very best kits. I use Fat quarter shop because they offer 2 day shipping, and of course I pay more for the shipping but I don't have to wait over 2 weeks for my material. Hancocks here, when I do go in the store are not very friendly. I am addicted to material. So....help me !!!

Agree with all you said! Those scraps and stash can be made into smaller projects like table runners/toppers, pot holders, mug rugs, etc if you aren't in mood for a full size quilt. When I purchased a new machine with bigger surface space, I stopped sending every little project to a long arm quilter. Only full size quilts go there now. Yes, basic thread colors are just fine for piecing.

Well, to be perfectly honest, the number one thing I have done to save money is, I QUIT going to fabric stores altogether. I just can't afford to pay their prices. Even on sale, when at times you can get a yard for $7.00 or so, it is just too much for me to spend when I need grocieries and have rent and bills to pay. I even quit going to thrift stores because the thrift stores where I live are being ridiculous and their prices have skyrocketed. I mentioned to my mom who is 87 and has LOTS and LOTS of friends, that I would always take fabric, and her friends that belong to quilt guilds give me some at times. Honestly, I just ask around. Just can't afford the stores anymore.

Yes, I’ve been trying not to buy unless I need something to finish a project. I’m seriously thinking that I might need to unsubscribe from the “Daily Deals,” that many sites have. I’m only subscribed to 4; but if you don’t see it or know about it, then you can’t want it! (Actually, I just realized it’s more like 8, although they didn’t all have daily deals when I signed up.) It’s great to know about a sale if you’re looking for something specific, so you don’t kick yourself rt aft you buy it at a higher price. But I almost NEVER pay full price; it’s just way too expensive! It also really bothers me that quilting, which shd just be a fun, relaxing hobby, has become so commercialized. I feel that so many sites are screaming, “Buy this!” Or, “Buy that!” “No, you didn’t spend enough! Keep going!” And don’t even get me started on the “Block of the Month” offers. Come on, seriously?, spend over $500 for ingredients to a quilt that’s not even made yet??? Do ppl really not add up the cost of those monthly shipments, and also the postage??? Not to mention, now they also charge a reservation fee! I get that it might be less overwhelming to make one block a month. But they cd easily ship the whole kit at once, saving, at the very least, a ton of shipping charges. And most of those quilts are not even pretty! Yuck! (Edited to correct spelling; sorry for the soap 🧼 box! 😂)

I love finding quilting fabric, cotton bed sheets, cotton and linen clothing at thrift stores that I can use in quilting projects. I can find high quality cotton top sheets for $2 to $5 to use as quilt backs. When I receive marketing and sales emails and get all excited about the product, I try to stop and think if this was something I ever thought I wanted before I saw the email. For instance, if I’ve been sewing and thought “I wish I had more red fabric” and then I get an ad for red fabric, I’ll buy it. If I never even had a desire for red fabric but get excited when I see red fabric in an ad, I try really hard not to buy it. I do periodically go through manufacturer websites to see what their next releases are and may pick a couple that I want to buy when they arrive in stores. But these are purchases I make because I love something intrinsically, not because a company hyped it and I’m feeding off their hype.
