Some people lose interest. I sold a lovely restored motorcycle a few years ago despite huge expense because I realised one day that I had fallen out of love with it & that my life would improve by its absence. I advertised it in that way on our club board and sold it the next day. I’m not sorry about the expense or the discounted sale & also learned some valuable lessons. I’d not hidden that I had had to rebuild the engine twice and never gained confidence in it. I kept expecting it to break again and that dowsed my enjoyment. The new owner hardly used it but was very pleased to own it. By contrast, my two previous bike restos had gone well, and they’ve been thoroughly thrashed for years. My next classic purchase was a Porsche 😊

Well try a Chimera! Mate bought one. Did no work other than tyres (expensive, but not scary), and sold it a year later for about 200 quid profit after doing 10k miles! Says it's the best car he ever owned. Drove it everywhere, on holiday all over the UK after taking about half the year off, driving around car meets and cathedrals and all that stuff. Pretending he's the king of chav England. I told him over and over again that he's totally mental. And I had to say it. He was right. It did have stuff done to it, some cool trick exhaust and sprayed a non standard colour, and some kind of map that I never established (it shifted!) - but to buy it, drive it like mad for a year, and then sell it at zero loss? +200 after tyres? Lucky? Yes. But right? Absolutely!

Great selection, especially the Chimaera because I bought one a month ago 😍 Very undervalued for what you get. As with all of these, buy with your head, not your heart and have a slush fund “just in case”. The TVR’s might have niggly little things to sort (mainly electrical), but after the chassis, the mechanics are very basic, robust, sensibly priced and easy to spanner on if that’s your thing. But that sound …… by far the best of the bunch 👌

I test drove the Elan when it came out. The advertising line was that 90% of drivers could use 90% of the performance 90% of the time. Sounds great. What it meant for me was lots of acceleration, lots of grip and on-rails handling. It would go down a country road as fast as anything. But the accessible performance and lack of drama were combined with the sound of an old washing machine and absolutely no excitement. If you went fast enough to make it interesting you would be well beyond sensible and you'd either bend it or lose your licence in short order. Didn't buy.

I know you weren't 'promoting' any of the cars you showed but they were all interesting in their own way. One thing to mention is insurance category letters changed a while ago (not sure when?) so it is worth 'matching' them with the current ones. It is possible to get the category marker removed by a Government registered examiner at a cost of around £200.00. You would need to weigh up the age of the car and when the repair was done to see if that avenue was worth going down. The examination is very comprehensive and they are entitled to take the car apart if they feel the need to do so hence the price. I think the Bentley R would be a great car to replace the Merc with Jack just up your street I think! Thank you for the video, food for thought for anyone with 10k to spend and yes go and see the car before you part with the money. 👍👍

*I WISH* we could get those kinds of prices in the USA! Fancy British cars have always been very expensive here and that premium seems to follow them through their lives. As of right now, 1 GBP = $1.26 and a quick & dirty search shows these US prices: DB7: Lowest is $19K, most are $30-35K. XKR: Starts around $14K for high-mileage examples, good ones are in the 30s. I did see one 11K mile convertible for $29K, seems a steal. TVR: Nothing newer than 1999 here as they left the US market decades ago, but I see a '97 Chimaera with 116K miles for $26K. '80s Models $15-20K, some 2000-ish ones for $40-80K as soon as they become legal to import (A US specialist is already advertising them). Lotus M100 Elan: $15-25K and they seem to be appreciating. Bentley Turbo R: $15-40K. Lowest priced one has 175K miles. To throw in another example, we didn't get the Lotus Elise S1 (though a few have been privately imported now that they're old enough) but the S2s we did get have never really gone below $30K for one that hasn't been thrashed as a track-toy and they're on the way back up, with the better ones going for $49-69K, more than they cost new! This is a car that cost as much in the USA as an E-Class Merc, which seems ridiculous for such a tiny little thing no matter how exciting it is to drive.

High end cars that have complete good maintenance records can be bargains, because badly kept specimens have soured their reputation and lowered prices. I own 2 TVR Chimaeras. Both are fully restored at quite enormous expense and are far better than when brand new. They are amazing. End of. But don't go bargain basement (like these) without a full inspection by an expert. If you can get a good 4.0l (chassis in good nick, engine sound and cosmetics OK), at under £15k you will have a car which is excellent value. But my advice is to look for a 4.5l. My one which is tuned for serious performance turned out 326bhp with sports racing suspension, my comfy cruiser/tourer made 295bhp. You can embarrass some really expensive cars with that under the bonnet. TVRs have the most smiles per gallon of any known car.

For sub £10k you would be looking at a really good 290S with the Ford Cologne V6 or a 350i with the good old Rover V8. Don’t underestimate the V6 engines cars, they are light, quick and agile and sound epic. The S series were Peter Wheelers first car as owner and saved TVR. Without them we wouldn’t have the Griffith or Chimaera. You need to review the S Series (280s , 290s and the V8s to choose from!) A review of a big wedge would be good too 400se etc.

For me, if I didn't need ULEZ compliance, out of these I'd go for the Aston DB7 auto. I like the style and I actually like the interior. The six is also a good engine and it's powerful enough with the supercharger. I don't really like supercharger whine, but it does it's job. However, my understanding is the supercharger is this car's main mechanical weakness. Like all of these, there is the potential for big bills. If I needed ULEZ compliance, out of these it would obviously be the XK. Good cars. Inexpensive to buy and relatively inexpensive to run, certainly in this company. Although, the road tax is the highest. I'd love a big Bentley, but the problem for me is the size. You certainly need the space to keep one of these undercover. And you don't really want to be driving one of these regularly in our congested cities. Otherwise, fantastic...if you can find a sorted one. All that said, rather than the Aston, personally I'd probably choose a Maserati 3200 GTA. Why auto? Simple. Both the Aston and the Maserati have very tight pedal boxes, which are problematic even for those with slim feet. I have very broad feet, so auto is my only option for regular use.

Pedestrian crash sensor on the XKR is not an easy fix assuming the 4.2 is the same at the front as the 5.0. Unlike the non-R models where you can simply remove the plastic cover at the front of the engine bay and reach down, the R models is full bumper off job. Even then you can only change it by feel. Luckily the cables are decent lengths so once you remove the bolts you can pull it up and plug the new one in. I did this job recently on my 2011 5.0 and it was quite time consuming. The sensor (there are two I just changed the bad one) is around £150. Which is why the seller hasn't fixed it - easy fix ......

Back in Aus, and with the car on a hoist, a thorough inspection found significant rust in underbody components that included the front and rear brake rotors and shields (rear shields were a pain to replace), lower door seals which contained a metal strengthener were a cruumbling mess, struts were rusty, the majority of the underbody fasteners had lost their zinc plating, many underbody brakets had attained the ungainly rust patina (as such items only receive a 'dusting' when the car is built), and corrosion on the air conditioning pipes located at the front of the car - had to replace the "holed) condensor and associated aluminium pipes because the oxidised aluminium connectors could not be unfastened without damage. The aforesaid was only on the UK roads, as a daily driver, for circa 5 years, consequenlty I would expect that a 20+ UK daily driver would be a 'rust mecca'. So would I import a UK car that is circa 15+ years old? Unless the car has been a garage queen and only used during the summer months - then NO. Same applies to cars located on the north eastern part of the US as the winter 'salty road' conditions are - in my experience - worse than in the UK.

I don‘t know if it’s a RHD thing, but here in Germany you can’t find these prices. I would say add 30-50% at least (for LHD then).
@user-pt1ow8hx5lАй бұрын
Well. Yes. LHD is a closed market, isn't it. Sort of. Also, the pound is really weak, making this a bit of a candyshop. But, don't forget, you german: These are british cars!! With british engineering. One has to add for repairs and spare parts.
@Gentleman...DriverАй бұрын
British car prices were always a lot cheaper than continantal prices. I think it has to do with the MOT-requirements (this would be your TÜV equivalent in Germany), and because of the cheaper prices to keep the cars alive in general. Compared to the UK it costs a fortune to service a car, yet alone repair something.
@marcmichel9797Ай бұрын
I think it has to do with the size of the RHD market (small) compared with the higher demands for LHD (cars go to the eastern countries). You actually get those low prices here in Germany… for RHD cars nobody wants.
@shelbynamels7948Ай бұрын
for audiences in the US, the level of nitpicking by the MOT is mindblowing. Color me gobsmacked.

England and Japan are similar in that things get super cheap when people get bored, they sell them super cheap, cause like here it can't be sold to mainland Europe, then become super expensive a few years later because of nostalgia.

I never understood the fame of the DB7. It was cramped if nothing else. Many things weren't Aston's. In a specialty car like a TVR or a Noble you accept that, but Astons were made for class 2 castle owners. This just won't do. Bespoke or go home with your tail between your hindlegs.

I’ve a feeling that the old Bentley Rs have perfectly synchronised fuel and rev counter gauges, with the fuel gauge moving down at exactly the same rate that the rev counter moves up.

Buying one of these cars is similar to buying an ink jet printer. Cheap to buy but expensive to maintain (in the case of the printer, expensive and often ink cartridges).

It'd be the DB7 for me, but I think a £10k one would break my heart and my bank balance. I think I'd rather pay nearer £20k for a good sorted one. A leftfield choice would be what I own.....a 2005-2009 "S197" Mustang. A V8 at £10k is likely to be ropey and a likely "total loss" car from the US, but a V6 can be had for that money. Fast? Not really, but they offer great looks and good handling (yes, really) for your £10k 🙂
@AndrewDay_Aston-Martin-DBS5126Ай бұрын
All very well to suggest the XKR above the DB7, BUT important difference is the i6 DB7 is only £345 Road Tax pa but the XKR is the top rate a £735 pa. That alone would swing it for me. There is no way I'm going to be stuck with a £735 annual bill for a 'cheap' car of any make. That is a serious flaw of the Road Fund Licence system, it was latterly made really expensive for expensive cars, and therefore by default people who could or should be easily able to afford it, but now they are bargain basement prices, RFL cost is way out of kilter with the car's value so no body wants them, so they get cheaper still! Catch 22!

Very entertaining but the best under £10K sports car is an MG TF Lots around, many low mileage cars, carefully owned. Just make sure the head gasket has been changed. £5K buys you a peach. And prices are rising.

I was going to buy a used Aston Martin dbs superleggera to use in the uk when I visit the uk as I live abroad. However with vehicle excise duty being £5490 in 2025 and insurance increases it has become economically unviable. The new government will kill the car enthusiast market. Social engineering.

A much more helpful guide would be vehicles in Autotrader where you find the majority are decent cars at the right price. eBay is still a great place to get rid of rubbish to mugs and FB marketplace, well draw your own conclusions

There's no guarantee that a more expensive XK/car won't need the same amount of work as a 'too cheap' car' will need. Have a look at it and then decide if any work need justifies the price. Depending on what wrong with the car, £2000 is a nice chunk of money that you can use to sort the car out in a way that YOU want. Dont be scared of cheap cars...just be realistic in regards of what you're getting.

XK is just ridiculous value for under £10K. I’ve owned a 2008 4.2 coupe for 3 years and done 30,000 miles and have enjoyed it enormously. Every time I think about changing it I find myself thinking only of going to a 4.2 XKR! Beyond that it’s hard to think about paying £25K plus for a 997 Porsche 911.

You really have low prices on used cars in the UK, I´m a bit jeallous, ha ha. Too bad they all are right hand drive. Prices for used cars vent nuts here in Sweden during the pandemic and are still very high. Only cars that´s always been cheap here are Jaguars for some reason. If you can work on them yourself you can get a lot of car for the money.
