I know that God's ways are not our ways, and we don't always understand why God does certain things. But, I always have a hard time wrapping my head around why God would instruct Moses to have a man stoned merely for picking up sticks on the Sabbath. This is just one example that non-Christians would use as evidence that our God is not a loving God. As Christians, we know that God was merely trying to get the people to understand how important it is to obey ALL of God's laws - not just the ones that suit us. But, when I read about something like this, I really have to pray my way through it.

The sabbath symbolizes God as Creator and Lifegiver. The only day He sanctified. Not a thing to be trifled with.

@scotthunt You are not alone. This one is tough to understand for sure. Like you, when I read this passage I had only "the ways of God" that are different from ours in mind as an explanation. But then I think about God being merciful as well and simply can't find a good way to explain that to a mocker. I'll pray my way through it also. :(
