I've been looking at silks... What type of silk would you use for the basic layers? Is superlight Paj silk good enough? (have to watch my expenses)
@LivingFelt
@LivingFelt 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Drishana, start with 3momme to 5 momme. Gauze is lightest, then Chiffon, then Paj = we call it Habotai also called China Silk. The Paj tends to "ruche" more = get textured with bublbles and ripples, especially where you put wool on one side (such as the back) and not the other.

Hi, I loved knowing this technique. I want to start trying to do. I'm with a costume design for a Tinkerbell fairy and friends. I would like to know if I can use a normal felt footage and add this technique on top of the felt to make how textures would work. Because a dress or pants, a sweater is too big. thanks

This is a very very good tutorial! Only one thing I would suggest is to early on explain how the fabrics and fibres are to bond in the felting process to result in a newly created fabric. In order to capture woven fabric using fibres that will felt. Perhaps also explain the actual process of felting and how Nuno uses that in the creating of new fabric. Your vocabulary is excellent and demonstrating your design decisions show the procedures well. Would like to hear more "why" a decision is made regarding the felting process and not just the colours in the design.

Thank you for watching! We cover lots of the "beginner" topics and terms routinely on our live show but not in every video. You can catch us live most Wednesdays at 2pm Central on facebook.com/livingfelt. Regarding "why the choice to felt"...for one, our founder is a felt maker :) it is her passion and chosen medium...most days, second, because we are a felting supply company and we love sharing with others how to felt, third, its crazy fun, fourth, you can make incredibly original and one of a kind things...every single time you "felt". Have fun! :)

This may be a silly question but can you use synthetic fabric for nuno felting as long as it's an open weave so there are spaces for the fibres to poke through?
@LivingFelt
@LivingFelt 7 жыл бұрын
HannahGrahamOfficial it is a great question. The short answer is yes, however it is recommended to make a test swatch to make sure the fiber will bind and to see how it behaves. We use a small synthetic piece of fabric in this vid and show our test piece as well. Have fun!

I'm trying to felt a silk scarf and I'm not getting good results. The wool isn't working into the silk. What should I try?
@thebadpoet
@thebadpoet Жыл бұрын
If you’re cutting into a piece of fabric just do a burn test to see if it’s silk. You only need a few threads and it is immediately obvious if you’ve got silk or a synthetic.

I'm just getting started and I was wondering if you have to use silk for the base layer or can you use other materials?
@LivingFelt

Christie Bullard the fabric or material should have some what if an open weave so that the fibers can migrate through. you can always make small test swatches to see how the fabric behaves, whether it puckers, atays flat, etc. have fun!

I thought I might try tulle since it is open weave, mainly for affordability really. Thanks!

Christie Bullard make a small test piece. Tulle might be rough to wear. cotton scrim is inexpensive. .. aka cheese cloth. .the fabric store will have it on a bolt.
