A major advantage of an assembled electrode over a plated electrode is that it's far easier to repair. If the titanium should decay it doesn't take the platinum with it. You can disassemble the electrode, get new titanium, and rebuild it with no loss of the valuable platinum.

So I'm going again through this video after a year, and many seem to think it was a joke. It isn't in fact, except as pointed by NurdRage below the ridiculous price. This does work, but no need to spend $1000 on platinum to get a real platinum electrode. That ounce of platinum in the coin if properly processed would be enough to make many electrodes. I have in fact made a platinum electrode in a similar manner, but for much less money. I used a 5g platinum bar, also purchased with my soul (and some bitcoin on top) and stretched it very thin by hammering it between 2 sheets of leather. It's really the surface of the platinum that matters, not the bulk of the platinum trapped inside the bar or coin. I ended up with a thin piece that's about 6cm^2 per side, so about 12cm^2 total. I then spot welded this to the end of a titanium strip. It works nicely in a perchlorate cell. I trust the welded joint much more than plain mechanical assembly with bolts - salt will eventually creep between the titanium and the platinum at the mechanical joint and degrade the contact. I spent the equivalent of $170 on the platinum bar, and a couple of hours hammering on it. But I plan to enjoy my real platinum electrode for many years to come.

The entire point of the platinum is to protect the more vulnerable titanium from corrosion in the form of a coating. If you are literally just going to bolt a piece of Pt on to bare titanium strips, why bother? Just use plain Ti, it will have the same effect, and be cheaper.

It's a slight joke. Technically this does work. But it's ludicrously expensive and no one in their right mind would ever do it. That being said, "bulk platinum" electrodes which use pure platinum elements do exist, but they usually use very thin platinum foils rather than thick coins. a coin is a very inefficient use of platinum since the surface area to mass ratio is much smaller than a foil.

Platinum electrodes are awesome. And i'll never forget the manufacturers recommendation how to clean the platinum electrodes of our coulometric karl-fisher device (Same thing as the Karl-fisher titration, but instead of adding the reagents you create a part of them by oxidizing iodine I- to I2): Just clean them with a 1:1:1 solution of sulfuric acid, nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide xD A bit extreme, but since it's an awesome cleaning solution it won't attack the platinum electrodes, why not? Just don't mix the 3 compounds the wrong way or you'll get a huge cloud of nitrous gases xD

I had no idea that platinum is now about 20% cheaper than gold! That's crazy! You use the same tools to drill titanium, that you use to drill any other metal. A drill, and metal drill bits.
@goodfeller27 жыл бұрын
You need cobalt drill bits to drill metal like that. Which are far more expensive than your run of the mill bits. But I agree, those proprietary nuts and bolts were probably pretty expensive just because they are titanium.
@ColtaineCrows7 жыл бұрын
For something thin like that you could drill it with any old drill bit, wouldn't matter. The coating is generally there for "non-stickness". In my experience titanium behaves a lot like aluminium when machined.
@xenonram7 жыл бұрын
Mitchell G You can drill titanium with regular drill bits. Especially if you're only drilling two holes.If you're drilling titanium for work or production, then yeah cobalt coated or solid carbide bits are best. but it's not a matter of how well they'll cut, it's a matter of longevity. But for two holes, a regular bit from home depot will work just as well. It just wouldn't last very long. (In fact the few times I've drilled titanium, I drilled quite a few holes with regular TiN and black oxide bits.) Also, cobalt coated drill bits aren't very expensive. you could get a cobalt coated bit to drill those holes for just a few bucks.

What you generally get in the "fake" anodes are coatings of palladium and/or rhodium over a cheap ferro titanium base. At least, that's what one I have appears to be. It'll work OK for 2 volt jewelry plating, but not last well in a perchlorate tank. HOWEVER, it does appear to me that the rhodium or palladium over titanium makes a very nice clean and not oxidized surface for plating lead dioxide for creating a much more durable anode. Thoughts?

I knew something was wrong when you said you didn't even have a drill to drill into the titanium strips. I was thinking What????? , .... Nurdrage does not even have a common electric drill??? lol
@Hawk0137 жыл бұрын
Drilling titanium is a bit harder than just having a drill. If it is 4al6v, which is the most commonly used alloy for machining and fabrication purposes, it's even more difficult because the alloy is very tough, and does not conduct heat, which leads to burning your drill bit and softening the cutting edge, which leads to total edge failure. I recommend stub or screw machine length industrial grade HHS drill bits, and you want to do this in a drill press if at all possible. Buy a pack of whatever size you plan on using, because you are likely going to burn at least one. Run it slow, with even pressure, and lots of coolant. Too little feed pressure is also bad, because if it's not cutting it's rubbing, and that's heat that will also burn your tooling.
@taiwanluthiers7 жыл бұрын
You don't want to use 6AL4V titanium for anodes... they are not nearly as chemically resistant as pure titanium. Always use Grade 2 or something. Unfortunately you will have to make your own nuts and bolt out of grade 2 because nobody makes them (they are all 6AL4V). Drilling titanium isn't that hard, I did it with a drill press. I even tapped it too.

I wound the ends of a really thin stranded copper wire around the gold arms, so they would act as electrodes for the ring. I then siliconed the hell out of that connection. The real trick was having the copper wire have a zinc lead on the other end. Why re invente the wheel when redox reactions have been known about for years.
