There are a lot of chloroform-related jokes down in this comments section, and while they're pretty funny, this is a place for science, so it's time to inject some truth directly into your eyeballs: Rendering someone unconscious with chloroform is nothing like you would see in a crime drama. It takes at least _5 minutes_(but probably more like 10min) of continuous inhalation of chloroform to anaesthetize a person.

+PhazonSouffle You can try plain suffocation with say nitrogen gas, still takes a minute or two. Cyanide or carbon monoxide act much quicker if you don't care about your subject's survival.

+Gareth Dean It would take less then a minute, most likely. The problem isn't knocking someone out, it's keeping them knocked out. Deprive them of oxygen and they die within minutes. Return oxygen and they wake up pretty much immediately. Its really hard to keep people unconscious for any real length of time without using proper general anaesthetics, and there's a reason anaesthetists are so highly paid: relatively minor errors in dose can be ineffective, or kill.

Gareth Dean No, you need them to be out long enough to secure them in a private location, as needing to knock them out in the first place implies you have some need to be covert about it. That is, if you weren't in a place where them being conscious would compromise you, you wouldn't need to knock them out to subdue them. And if you wanted to kill someone, there are probably simpler solutions to your specific problem.

+Ian Burningham It doesn't mix with water so it's more of a non-polar solvent. It does not leave a residue when it evaporates. But due to its carcinogenic properties most industries are trying to move away from its use. It's a pretty bad environmental pollutant.

How could this procedure be adapted to make use of calcium hypochlorite powder in place of sodium hypo. bleach solution? The Calcium Bleaching powder for pool shock solution can generally be purchased at better value and sometimes in higher purity than can be found in Clorox; some sellers advertise a nearly pure (>95%) calcium hypochlorite granular powder sold by the pound in the $10-15 range, and the MSDS for most of the products advertise only trace quantites of NaCl, CaCl, and CaOH and Carbonate as secondary components. I could care less about the production of Chloroform, but I am very interested in the extraction of Propionate/Propionic acid. Also, is there any modifications you could make to this procedure to favor Propionate synthesis over Chloroform?

Yes, but it's messy. The chemistry works perfectly, but you end up with calcium hydroxide and carbonate precipitate that sinks down and mixes with the chloroform. It's not impossible to separate, but it's really messy and gooey and as you handle it the volatile chloroform evaporates. So most amateur chemists prefer sodium hypochlorite. It can be done with calcium though, just not worth it.

To anyone wondering: Chloroform smells very unpleasantly solvent-y. It does make your head spin from one whiff, but doesn't knock you out right away. You have to really huff it to pass out, which feels like standing up too quickly or hyperventilating. When you come back from that state, you're left with an intense headache and nausea and the next time you smell chloroform or DCM it makes you want to throw up.

+Tim Fox Assuming you can't just bottle it up and take it to your local auto store for disposal most antifreeze is some sort of alcohol, oxidizing it would be the most definite option, say with permanganate, or maybe catalytically. Your best bet might just be simple dilution though, washed down the drain it's not likely to come into contact with anything it'd harm more than plain sewage.

+Gareth Dean The problem is that most places that take it for free will only take a limited amount (say 2 gallons per week). I have several vehicles that have a capacity of nearly 3 gallons. Following the rules would take some time, and would force me to have something sitting around in bottles that I would prefer not to have sitting around in my garage. I thought neutralization could be an option to having to allow it to sit around.

Tim Fox Aaah, that is a good point. Your big issue will be doing it cheaply and quick. Our local panelbeater uses a catalyst, it's a big flat tray with a platinum sponge in it, air disposes of the stuff.over a few hours. You could try boiling it down and\or burning the stuff but that too might be too much fuss. I shall be curious as to Cody's advice.

+Gareth Dean I had thought about boiling/reducing the liquid. At the least, I could reduce it to get under the limit imposed on the amount you can drop off at any given time. Depending on what fumes would be given off, this may be an option, and the left over solids perhaps could just be placed in a refuse bag.

ok so i have an odd situation i attempted the synthesis with hdx concentrated bleach estimated 12.5 % which was well below 0 degrees the issue i ran into is after all was said and done instead of clean clear chloroform at the bottom i have a white goop instead of chloroform im concerned as to what the product may actually be as the msds doesnt show anything other than the SH in its listing,

yeah, sounds like it might have other additives in addition to bleach (and salt which they all have). Look for the cheapest brand you can, stupidly cheap. The cheap ones tend to have less additives than the more costly ones.

This haloform reaction has the same mechanism as the triiodomethane reaction, isn't it? But why do you need hypochlorite ions? Is it, perhaps, to form Cl2(aq) when ClO- ions react with Cl- ions, which I feel is not really favoured under alkaline conditions?

Haloform reaction is a general name for α-substitution reactions of ketones with halogenes, forming haloforms (chloroform CHCl3, bromoform CHBr3, iodoform CHI3). The textbook reaction uses some halogene gas, but a hypohalite will also work. In the reaction of NaClO with a methyl ketone: 1. The hypochlorite ion will pull an α-proton from the ketone, forming an enolate ion and hypochloric acid. 2. The electron pair from the α-carboanion will attack the chlorine of HClO, the Cl-O bonding pair will be moved to the oxygen, thus forming an OH- ion. 3. The process repeats 2 more times, leaving us with R-C(=O)-CCl3. 4. Then comes the elimination step (OH- attacks carbonyl, elimination of CCl3-, carboanion pulls hydrogen leaving us with chloroform and carboxylate ion)

I used to make Chloroform by combining Acetone, Trichloroisocyanuric acid (pool disinfectant) and NaOH. The reaction is very very exothermic, and it goes runaway veay easily. I have a question. When it went runaway it seemed to give off chloramine(s) instead of chloroform, or maybe chloroacetone. I think it was chloramine, but anyway it was something extremely caustic and irritating fumes. Could anyone tell me what and how forms when this goes runaway? When it goes smooth it yields cloroform and cyanuric acid

Well in case of a runaway the strongly basic solution hydrolyses the formed amide and in the presence of a chlorine source it can most probably form mono, di, and trichloramine which is not the most plesant compound to come across by just a accident. still this is a theory cant confirm for sure as im a amature home chemist my self working in the kitchen, which is not ideal for chemistry.

Phosgene is produced by passing carbon monoxide and chlorine through a bed of activated carbon. Phosgene from chloroform is just an unpleasant side effect if chloroform is stored improperly. That isn't nearly efficient enough to be used on an industrial level. That is why a small amount of ethanol is added to the chloroform before storing. That prevents it from breaking down.

If nothing else, I learned about the R notation in molecular diagrams. I thought "wait a minute, there's no element R in the periodic table is there?" For those who were curious, it means "radical" - basically, a wildcard, any group that can attach to that bond. Most commonly it's a carbon group or hydrogen, but can also be oxygen, a halogen, nitrogen, even phosphorous.

No sorry, where did You get the "radical" from? I might be wrong, maybe it's some colloquial term I am not aware of, but a radical usually refers to a species with an unpaired electron. And the R- group is a pseudoelement symbol. Referred to as an an organyl group, it denotes a (usually) arbitrary ORGANIC structure. So it can't be just a phosphate or hydroxyl group, it should contain some organic part. However, it is ALSO used to specyfically denote an alkyl group. Meaning it is specifically an alkane (of course with one hydrogen missing), but still, of arbitrary length and shape. And hydrogen is controversial. Sometimes R can be a hydrogen atom, sometimes it is distinguished. Often it is stated that "R≠H". And there are mamy other commonly used pseudoelement symbol, like Ac- meaning an acetyl gropu CH3-C(=O)-. So AcOH would be acetic acid and AcCH3 - acetone. Phenyl group (Ph) - a benzene ring. So PhOH is phenol, PhNH2 aniline etc. Et for ethyl (CH3CH2-) thus EtOH is ethanol. NurdRage, could You give a quick advice or at least guide where to look for a simple way(-s) to deal with ozone that comes out of 1kW UV lamps (lacquer curing)? Right now it is just vented outside (about 120m^3/h together with air continuous, ozone concentration unknown... I have nothing to measure with). Best idea I have is to feed this air/ozone mixture in heating oven (boiler) that burns wood as it already has air intake fan to ensure enough air for burning stuff. But I am somewhat worried I will make oxy-torch that will destroy inner walls of stainless steel boiler... Or is this idea is so f**king dangerous within itself I should not deal with it? Masters degree in computer science is not helping me a lot! :D

+DefekCs It shouldn't be too bad, ozone itself won't corrode stainless steel, even in high concentrations, and it's unlikely your mixture has a particularly high conentration anyway. (The conditions that produce ozone will also break it down.)

+DefekCs In-line 10% air injection (12m^3/hr) along with activated charcoal filter with a little platinum powder sprinkled into the mix. The low density platinum mixture will catilyze O3 to O2 The AC will absorb any 'surge' volume of O3 and allow it to diffuse out during the off time and give it more time to react with other O3 molecules. I would suggest 10cc of filter media per 1m^3/hr. in your case 1200cc of AC w/ 0.6g Pt powder (You can omit the Pt, but you will not be destroying the O3 as quickly). To Nerd Rage. Im not sure how else to contact you so this might seem kinda random. I cant seem to find the answer im looking for anywhere i look. Your a genious so i figure you might know or could test it to find out. This experiment uses the freezing liquid you get from the air duster cans when you flip them upside down. I filled a shot glass full of the liquid and carefully dropped it into a cut in half milk carton filled with boiled water. It exploded and shoot the shoot glass 50 feet into the air. I had no idea that would happen. I have 2 channels one with upper case leters of my name and lower case. the lower case channel(alex littig) has 1 video of the reaction in slow motion. my phone wont let me link it. my questions are what is causing the explosion and what temp is this stuff. i can freeze bananas and food like that and watch it shatter. not as good as liquid nitrogin but still cool.

actually just figured out my first answer. the liquid stuff inside the can is Difloroethane and is toxic. its a good thing i did this outside. even tho i did not know it was toxic you never know what could be toxic or not. thats why i did it outside. it pretty dangerous but compared to thermite its nothing if your safe

@NurdRage wouldn't it save a step to just control the reaction and let the chlorophorm evaprotare off of the reaction and collect and condense it back into liquid saving time since the water and byproducts have a higher evaporation temperature then the chlorophorm itself.

NurdRage my bad, I mean the reactions temperature. let it get to the temerature that the chlorophorm will evaproate off but not the rest of the chemicals, byproduct, and contaminants. If this is possible you can distill and purify it while it reacts without needing to separate it from the bulk then purify. this will save you the time of letting it cool and coalesce and using a pipette to separate.

I feel like I'm on some sort of list for watching this... Even though you would need to inhale it for 10 minutes to go unconscious, and you'd probably go unconscious faster from just the rag itself suffocating you than the chloroform.
