Hi Kendra. You are correct in your assessment of how some doctors and nurses are so dismissive of non-clinical and ancillary personnel. I too work for one of the 2 largest teaching hospitals in Baltimore, but my facility is not located in Baltimore. I’m a night shift MRI tech at a trauma center and to lighten the load of our (1) 3rd shift transporter for the entire hospital, I will get my own patients from the ED. I’m nosy and ask a lot of questions too. I make my patients feel so comfortable in the scanner that they really open up to me. One time a female patient divulged to me that her husband is physically abusive. She just casually let it slip while telling me her medical history. She wanted to know if his abuse could have caused symptoms. I immediately spoke with her nurse upon returning her back to the ED. If I hadn’t informed the nurse, she probably would have never known.

It comes down to creating a trusting, therapeutic relationship. When I was a NAC, I figured I was the eyes and ears for my nurses. When I became a nurse, I respected my NACs, my environmental people, everybody I encounter in my working environment should always respect because you never know when you'll need backup.

You a soul that inspires regained trust in medicine. Teach one, each one. Bring back the love that is depleting in this world, it saves lives and generations. Humanity wins and it fills the heart not take away at the end of the day. Caring can have a trickle affect and in that can even save one's own life in this world. Also, "it takes a villiage" especially within an organization. I am guilty though and have to repent and check myself in certain factors you've mentioned. My gosh, Kendra, you are so wise and mature which forces me to question some in my generation. Thank gosh you've missed that gene of slowed maturity. Many blessings.

The second story is so important because I always think of non medical staff and how they have a wealth of knowledge. What you mentioned about porters/transporters is on point and I have spoken about this in regards to DV! They may be the only people who get to see the patient alone, because the spouse is always in the room! Also porters being male may give men more comfortability in speaking up their MH problems or even DV….anyway I’m off topic but loved your story times 💜

They are def chef'in it up at our hospital, and we've had some homeless people hanging out, too. Our sunrooms on each floor has cameras now because of people trying to find a place to sleep at night. As for water, I take a cup with me each time I give meds. It irks my nerves to not have water bedside, unless they are a CHF patient. Dietary is hard work, too. People need nutrition and need to have their choices.
@paulasage361110 ай бұрын
I remember a situation with a homeless person who decided to come into the hospital and was found in a bath that had been used years before for burn patients. The hospital no longer treated burns, but they left the bathtubes. The charge nurse went and spoke with the person and gave them a food voucher and a taxi voucher. Unfortunately, the person decided they did not want to leave, so security was called in. I thought they were pretty smart to go where they knew it would be safe. I'm just sad that what the hospital was able to provide wasn't enough for them.

Hey Kendra, Girlllllllll when I was working in the hospital I cleaned patient rooms. So when I do my rounds patients will request coffee, water, juice, etc. They get frustrated because the nurse wouldn’t give it to them after the call bell, or they’ll have a fluid restriction. It was always the rooms with the fluid restrictions that’ll I’ll get finessed out of giving them a beverage. I always pay attention to the signs on the door but sometimes signs won’t be there or i have to go an ask the nurse before I administer anything because technically I can’t really render care like that. Babyyyy when I tell you the patients be so madddd when I come back to their room and say “sorry since your under restrictions I can’t give you water sorry.” Sometimes they tell me quick before I ask their nurse “oh no no just go and get it for me please. Chile the BS in the hospital should be illegal. I hate that they treat the support staff like crap. They have a elite attitude towards us that’s why I left Kendra it was too much BS

Loved this video 💖 I totally agree that many people in healthcare (and even some patients) view the healthcare team as just the MD, the nurses, Physio/OT, and social work. So many times other members of staff have Picked up on things that were missed. ALSO, I agree about university teaching hospitals having a toxic work culture (not always, but very often). I’ve done placement at 2 now and I didn’t find it very welcoming. I work at a community hospital in Toronto, Canada…But, since I’m now back in school for my BScN, it’s likely my final consolidation will be with a university teaching hospital. Last time though, hopefully 😅

While I agree with the previous comment that stated you would make an excellent DON, the patients would ultimately suffer. I say this because there isn't one DON on planet earth who is as insightful, caring, compassionate, analytical and meticulous to details as you are as it relates to your patients receiving quality care in an acute care setting. DON's do not have the time, nor the desire, to be that "Kendra" nurse, lol, and it is understandable. Just change your name tag to "KN" instead of RN 🥰 Patients must really appreciate a nurse like you who makes them feel comfortable enough to engage in honest dialogue. You are gifted with the ability to secure a wealth of information from patients because you are empathetic. I have watched some of your videos and feel that you would make the best clinical instructor ever. Your students would learn so much from you and your stories as it relates to integrity, how to respond to bullying, showing compassion and going the extra mile and your hilarious teaching stories. I am sure you have the heard the adage, "No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care." This is a quote by Theodore Roosevelt who became the 26th president of the United States, back in 1901 and is still applicable 100+ years later. This quote is especially needed in the medical/nursing field today and after watching your videos, I feel that you are the epitome of one who shows how much she cares. Thanks for sharing and blessing others. I just know that you make God smile every day!!!

We have an environmental services person that is extremely nice, but she confuses our patients sometimes. This past weekend she brought in the lunch tray of a patient who was on contact precautions (dietary left it on the counter outside of the room, I guess), just trying to be nice, as she was about to clean the room. Well, the patient prompted her to remove the breakfast tray (dietary is supposed to come back and collect the trays, but hadn't), but the environmental services person did not reply. I told her that, although Tammy is very nice, she is not a dietary aide, she was actually from Environemtal services and here to clean your room, but I can remove the tray for now. Also, I'm not sure if a patient would want the person cleaning rooms to handle their food tray, IJS.

You are absolutely right nurses need to be nosy and pay attention to their patients. Once when my mother was in the hospital, she has since passed god rest her soul. Anyway, the person in the bed next to her, her husband would go into the bathroom with her empty water pitcher and come out with water. One day I asked him why was he getting water out of the bathroom when all he had to do was go down the hall and her could get ice and water or ask the nurse. He said he didn't want to bother them and the water in the toilet was very cold. 😳. When I told the nurse she was upset with me that I told her while she was sitting there where anyone could hear and she rushed around the counter and pulled me down the hall whispering to me not to say anything to anyone else and that she would take care of it.

Question: Why wasn't the nursing staff/care assistant staff doing their job in filling the water pitcher at least 3 times a day (6am, 2-4pm and 10pm as well as prn). The greatest opportunity to fill the patient's water pitcher is when the nurse is passing medications. I am not sure that filling the water pitcher from the toilet was intentional or out of ignorance. Beside the hospital floor, the hospital toilet is the nastiness place in the hospital. I hope that a social service referral was made and a home assessment for discharge was completed. Does the patient have access to clean and safe water at home. An even sadder story is when the nurse eats the patient's food and the patient doesn't eat. Whatever happened to trained volunteers who helped with some very basic needs of patients.
