I lived in a nursing home for a month, then insurance stopped. There was no planning or notice of discharge. I was told I would have to start paying in cash if I stayed one more day. The last evening I was there, a man showed up saying that it was time for me to go. I knew nothing about him showing up. I asked him who he was and how could I trust where I was going. I asked him how there would be payment where I was going. He said insurance. We go to his van. He drives me to a home out of the city. Someone sees us arrive. This man comes into this house bringing my things. I am supposed to sleep in a small room with another person. There are no drapes to divide us. The bathroom door is not big enough for my wheelchair. They expect me to use the portable potty in the closet. None of this seems right. I have seen no paperwork describing what is going on. Later on after being there a few days, I find out some of the other people are paying over a thousand dollars cash just to sleep on a bed in half a bedroom. I am new to this. The owner of the house shows up one day. I tell her I expect that medicaid will pay for my stay. She says that she expects all of my social security check. They lock the doors all the time so that people cannot get out. One day I ask a friend to come get me because I can't stand the conditions. There are 6 people living in this house and one female that is working there. I carry a couple of bags out to meet my friend at his truck. The people running the house say I can't leave because I am owned by the state. I tell them I am leaving. They grab my wheelchair and try to force me back into that house. I still don't have all of my things. I decide to go back in to that house to get the rest of my things. My friend drives off and comes back later. This time I carry more outside to his truck. I have to call a firetruck for assistance to get into this truck. They assist me. They are aware that the house is full of too many people. They are breaking the law by not having fire extinguishers. In that really nice nursing home I was in for a month I saw no notice of Residents Rights hanging on a wall anywhere. But they treated me very badly when they did not get together with me for care plans and eviction plans, etc. I was in the dark. I know more now. Even though insurance was paying for a month because I had appealed twice, did I still have the right to wait another month for the 30 day eviction? I didn't know anything about ombudsmen then.
