As a nurse am not even surprised that the health care is in a mess whether young or old as I am a victim, I have been living with pain in my knees since April despite visiting emerge and other doctors I was refused MRI when I finally fought and got the MRI in JUNE I have a tear which I kept telling them the pain am having is not being diagnosed properly with x-ray and ultrasound. @@meldawilliams1636 it’s literally insane when you are seeing it from both sides simultaneously like that. I work in this field and in seniors advocacy and the way “professionals” speak differently to them has always made me squirm - I’m only 50 but already seeing it start towards me over the last few years, from younger doctors and healthcare professionals - the being spoken down to with instructions like I’m a six year old, scolded for not having NOK to drive me home after an endoscopy (had it without sedation and drove my damn self), or the “politely tolerated dinosaur” when not having a myUHN account set up for digitized referral and results, is attributed to being technology stupid, instead of being A DECISION based on my own needs not theirs 😂 Healthcare is no longer a service provided, that you already paid into, it’s dog treats and you better perform right and catch it in the air or it will be with held. I mean it’s funny right now… but I can already feel how NOT funny it will be when I’m vulnerable, but still an immigrant with no NOK.

@@meldawilliams1636 I’m sorry you’re going through that. I too am on a bunch of waiting lists for ultra sounds and other medical appointments. It took my sister 6 months before she was properly diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. My mom said “F it!” and went to the States and paid out of pocket for a hip replacement. We may have free healthcare but it’s definitely coming at a high price. - Half of my family works in the medical field and the discussions had around what we see first hand are book worthy. I hope you get some relief soon.

This WAS the plan. It was made clear internally to those of us who work in this field 15+ years ago, that there would be NO extra funding, expansions or facilities built to accommodate the impending tsunami of retiring Baby Boomers and we’d be expected to push them through the exact same # of beds as their war vet parents Much like the other Planned Disaster: forcing LTC residents to remain in outbreak facilities in COVID isolation wings with no care staff, ventilators or outside visitors - and refusing to allow them the same right to a hospital bed with a ventilator like the rest of society… (because they weren’t likely to recover anyway so… we just “MAID” them comfortable ) When Doug Ford slipped up on his Weasel Wording and said “we need to put an iron ring around our Seniors IN LTC facilities “… he didn’t actually mean to protect them, he meant seal them in. A ring around something is containment. Our politicians are much more deliberate in their moral bankruptcy than you’re giving them credit for, and on BOTH sides of the spectrum. Now let’s wrap up with the convenient fast tracking of the MAID program and its future role in this Gong Show. We have gained international attention again… this time for our “pioneering work” in that area… and vague, flimsy language around its safeguards and criteria… It was running in LTC’s as palliative “care” long before being re-branded and rolled out en masse as “the right to choose”… and get us all used to the idea in time for the incoming Boomer Tsunami. And the circle is complete. 💁🏻‍♂️

Vacs did their damage driving away caregivers. Shocking how elderly are mistreated. My mother was 70-80 paying $2,400. a month but my sister and I had to go in “care” for her every other day. We did bed changes, bathing, her laundry etc etc. Hospitals are sending parents far away in transfers no regard for where family is and when released there is no return to original locations. Friend ended up 4 hours away needed us to drive 8 hour round trip! My sister was admitted after a fall and broken spine she was sent hundreds of miles away and died with family trying to find where she went. Unforgivable. Trudeau now talking about retired having houses too big for them! They paid and achieved their houses and those pass inherited to children. Horrible how Trudeau when asked what about veterans? He said “we can’t afford that”. Bases that closed should have become veteran villages example Base Borden. All the while Trudeau is flying in his private jet burning 36,000 liters of fuel an hour, going on $6,000. a night vacations, meals in the thousands of $$$. Every politician salary should be cut in half and all fringe benefits removed. There is the money to fix Canada!! Taxpayers who paid for 50 years and Trudeau burns it like it grows on trees. That’s our money your throwing away. And our multi millions in tax sent to other countries without even asking the Canadian citizens.

Privatization of nursing homes was a cash grab. Cash grab is not as lucrative now? Some other sector ripe for looting now? Now others (e.g. tax-payers) have to work to build non-profits and find some good home care solutions. “Temporary” for-profit nursing agencies are scooping up a lot of money from the public and private care sector. As long as we continue in this province to disrespect and underpay the actual nurses, nursing assistants, porters and cleaners, we are going to pay too much for insufficient care. Nurses and other caregivers deserve good working conditions, more autonomy, decent pay and job security. The problem starts with treating skilled, caring professionals and sick, elderly people as if they are a source of quick cash. (Talking about you Mike Harris and friends).

What a completely ignorant statement. Why do you think we are in this position? The federal liberal government has let in so many people we cannot support with healthcare and we are all suffering. For 18 years the liberal government was in power in Ontario and slowly decimated our entire healthcare system. I know because I nursed my mother as she passed while Harris was in charge and then my father while Ford took over. The difference in care and support was unimaginable. Even drugs that were once covered were delisted by the liberals in their deals with insurance companies. Things like Flonase that used to be a prescription became over the counter so we had to pay out of pocket for it. They stopped covering some surgery and my husband who is in pain with a swollen leg that has a giant varicose vein will cost us $5,000 to get removed. They have the gull to call it cosmetic. His right foot is swollen and by the end of the day and he’s in so much pain he can’t walk. Let’s not let facts get in the way of good old fashion political rhetoric. There is NO ONE that is in bed more with the corporations than the liberals. They ARE the corporations.

I dont think people realize how strict the rules are when operating a LTC. Families can be a nightmare and demanding. The staff turnover is high. The demands on workers are unreasonable. You could not pay me any amount of money to work in that environment. One RN for an entire facility, always understaffed and the medical needs of residents are more acute than what the staff are capable of working with.

The guv made the PSW course free for like two years in Canada . I am a fulltime uncertified care provider to my grandmother with dementia . Trying to hire a psw since she needs 24/7 care and we divide it between myself and my mom with a care giver we employ who is AMAZING...I cannot BELIEVE that these PSWS are looking to take on their own clients and asking for $36/hr ....I have held back from personally laughing in their face and asking how on earth do they think they deserve the wage of a RPN? INSANE!!! I think childcare and elder care providers deserve to make good money as they are a right hand to any family , but you can certainly tell who is in it for money versus who is in it for purpose . The care homes need to pay their staff beyter wages and that needs to abaolutely trickle down to housekeeping and dietary aides and people would be better off keepinf their loved ones at home with a live in then being neglected in a home . 🥺 Cant trust the guv for shit.

FORD promised to build more government nursing homes in Ontario to compensate for closing of the substandard homes when he came to power. But he has not built ONE. The seniors who have no family, Ccac helps do the paperwork, and beds out on the country arent so adverse to a solo person, or demented person. So FORD needs to mandate more homes.

The ignorance in some of these comments, some elders need 24 hour cear, due to illness. Most people cannot afford to quit their jobs to take care of their parents, because they also have a family to provide for, therefore long term care is needed. Some people also have no living family to take care of them. Those in charge do not care about the elderly, they can't get rid of them soon enough, the last few years have proven that.

The proportion of COVID-19 deaths reported in Canadian long-term care homes is twice the average for nursing homes in other developed countries, according to a new study. A report published by the Canadian Institute for Health Information paints a grim picture: As of May 25, residents of Canada's long-term care homes accounted for 81 % of all COVID-19 deaths. In other countries, the average was 42%. The proportion of deaths in aged care facilities ranged from less than 10 % in Slovenia and Hungary to 31 percent in the United States and up to 66 percent in Spain. The number of deaths in Canadian homes - 5,324 - is close to the average, but the figures varied widely between countries: from 28 in Australia to 30,000 in the US, more than 10,000 in France, Italy, Spain and the UK. In explaining this, the researchers point to country differences in testing and reporting practices regarding COVID-19. In addition, the number of virus infections is often under-reported, and in the case of Italy, data was only available from half of the nursing homes operating in the country. However, the report contains valuable information about the tragedy that occurred. The report's authors note that countries that took extra precautions in nursing homes had fewer infections and deaths. These countries include Australia, Austria and Slovenia, where mass testing of residents of nursing homes was carried out, there were isolation wards for the sick, trained staff and a sufficient amount of personal protective equipment. Their experience may be useful in the event of a second wave of the pandemic.

And what about the psw that take care of these older people, I would think their would be some kind of court procedure, to hold the owners accountable. Life lease, This will cause a lot of unnecessary people dying do to lack of care and being displaced, thats the bottom line. This is absolutely disgusting for this to happen. Everything in thir life is the home. They help them live out the rest of their life with no worries, and half of them don't even know what day it is, but they all have a routine. This is purely disgusting, those poor people, who worked for this country, are getting shafted. And because why, their older. Every family member will have to move over, or move themselves to a bigger place, the ripple effect that will be never ending, 😢, all for Condos, the owners should be ashamed, cause we all know they getting their money. And fix the place its on the owners who have neglected to do repairs, so they wait, then its to much to repair, total crap. Shameful is all. 😢
