Retired R.N. here: I was utilized as a preceptor due to my years of experience and background in adult education. My preceptor style was similar to yours. I have the following beliefs: 1. Knowledge replaces fear. 2. If you want competent successful co-workers and staff, you must be willing to invest time and energy into providing proper preceptorship. 3. No one has the right to lessen the dignity of another person.

I am a nursing student, and I have already been shocked by the toxicity I have in my class. I am shocked that these manipulative, conniving, narcissistic, uncompassionate people, will be nurses. As you said a 4.0 GPA and a BSN or MSN from a fancy school don't make you a good nurse. I feel the good-hearted, true healers that go into nursing are the minority. And that saddens me so much!

I am not in the medical field, but my sister has worked with doctors and nurses and the stories she tells me are atrocious. I can never understand how toxic and biased people can work in a profession that is meant to care for and be compassionate. I guess it's the money that brings them in :/ I was told I should be a nurse but sadly I hate the sight of blood. Good luck with your studies!!

I feel you. The nursing director of the program I was interested in exposed herself and the nursing field, so I dipped before the program even started. Too much bs for me, but what really gets me is how much these people love being cruel to others. I mean, the nursing director was reveling in telling us the cruelty she used to inflict on her co-workers and how she treats students in the program. Truly sickening.

Soooooo true!!!! I really think there's many narcissists & sociopaths attracted to healthcare and in leadership roles. It's disgusting how many dont have true care, empathy, or compassion for their patients and co-workers. There's few minority in it as healers for the right reasons and mainly for money or ego. Now I'm a therapist and have many nursing students as clients under extreme anxiety and depression from the bullying and high stress demands.

I have to say that this is one field that I will be very happy to see automated away to machines and AI. I do not want my patient care, my life, and health to be placed in the hand of highschool mean girls who pop out a vendetta because someone wore something they thought was ugly or infringed on their territory somehow. I don't want my patient care to be in the hand of an arrogant doctor who think they can't possibly be wrong about something they said. The more medical care can turn into telehealth (AI) and automation the better this world will be imo. Some people will miss that personal touch from having a nurse around, but I was built in a way where I think it's nice but I don't need it.

As a nurse of 23 years, I have seen so many scenarios involving bullying, nurses eat their young. It is supposed to be a field of healing and helping but its the opposite. I have grown tired and exhausted in nursing, it has changed so much. Good nurses are hard to find, if you have 20 nurses......probably 2 will be good......the rest are looking for the paycheck. There needs to be a massive over haul in the profession. Thank you for shedding light on this issue.

Absolutely !!! Agree 100%. I loved this explanation. 16 year nurse. Seen this....been there....been bullied. Even as a 10 year seasoned nurse....my first experience being bullied just freaked me out by a much less seasoned nurse, but she was a charge nurse. In the end, I quit. It is not worth my license. It doesn't matter if you are black or white, you need your documentation....on the record....and off the record. I went so far as to put an app on my phone and record some conversations. I went to the corporate HR, but nothing was happening. I left a job that I felt needed some really strong nurses for positive patient outcomes. It broke my heart. Still bothers me actually. Really sad situations out there. Have to be very aware.

I am going to school to be a non nurse medical professional bc I currently work at a hospital (non healthcare) and would never go into nursing because of how cliquey and just mean some of the other nurses can be in certain wards. I have patients tell me I’m so nice but I literally just do the bare minimum to make them comfortable 🫡 Nurses need to remember this isn’t retail. The patients aren’t entitled people who don’t understand coupons and policies. They’re people in pain. You’re not inconvenienced by their needs because this is literally your job you get a high salary to do. Suck it up, get therapy, and learn empathy

I work in a very large well know hospital in NYC, and I know what you're talking about, I've overheard conversations, I've witnessed this behavior with my own two eyes. I am not a nurse, just a housekeeper on one of the ICU's in this particular hospital. The criticizing of young new nurses, the mean girl cliques, the running to the nurse managers office to complain about something that a nurse new to the ICU isn't either doing, or not doing correctly. I've witnessed a new nurse cry her eyes out from nurse bullying, I've witnessed a nurse quit right on the unit mid shift. Some of them even bully the housekeepers. Try to make us feel less than because we don't have degrees. They will eat their breakfast or lunch in the nurses lounge and purposely leave their garbage and crumbs on the table, then turn around and complain and send emails to upper management that the break room is a mess 😩

😱 that's truly horrible and I'm so sorry to hear that. They should be ashamed of themselves. Who do they think they are? They don't realize that they're nothing special. Also I'm pretty sure that these heifers don't even know that a very smart and wealthy millionaire had lived as a janitor for all his career. It doesn't matter how much you make or your title, but how much you keep. They need to think about how much dysentery there would be without what you do so you are surely not just a housekeeper you have a very important job. I think a very wise man named Warren Buffett said that it's not how much you make but how much you keep. A lot of self-made millionaires don't have college degrees because they're smart enough to not get into debt like that or spend unnecessary funds unless they were rewarded scholarships. They can go sit down and take a thousand seats, and they are no fellow nurse to me. They need to have some respect. They think that having a job is the greatest thing in the world just because they have a profession, but in reality there are many housekeepers who are business owners that will crush these nurses when it comes to success. I'm not trying to come down on those nurses because I'm a nurse myself, but I know some of the most successful people do not have college degrees. They are smarter than that. These nurses work for the man just like the rest of us unless they have side hustles or businesses. I can never stand how much a nurse or even a doctor could be on such a high horse. It has always pissed me off, but I wanted to become a nurse from the very beginning, and it had to do with my upbringing. It's okay to be proud to be a nurse or someone of a different profession, but it's not okay to get ahead of yourself and think so highly of yourself above others. You should have an identity outside of your career anyway so don't worry about these stupid idiots.

And I think this is the breakdown. Folks are not entering the profession because of their passion for not on the service but for people. People are now entering the profession to make money or because their family members were in the profession. This mentality ruins new nurses coming into the profession because of their passion. As an LPN I precept new RN'S. I prepare them for success however when they rotate other with preceptors that are Are Rn's they feel intimidated by new nurses so they set out to run them off before they can get started.

Another 1970s retired hospital RN here, your presentation is excellent. Talking about the ‘toxic’ work environment that just seemed to get worse over my decades long career and very much saddened me. The effective preceptor role is a critical skill that is lacking in far too many. Having experienced ‘bullies’ in the very beginning of my career, I made a promise to myself that I would not ever be like that. I kept that promise and even was informed by a local RN college instructor, that older students would tell the newbies to ask for me as their preceptor (then I was designated as a college approved preceptor). (To me) if a nurse wants effective coworkers, then be a great preceptor who helps newbies (both new grads and new experienced employees) to reach their full potential.

This reminds me of an incident I witnessed many years ago when my husband was a patient in the ICU. I had to leave the shared room to allow the doctor to work on a patient. He needed something urgently . The black nurse came rushing out to a cart but could not find it. She asked another nurse nearby, and the response shook me. She proceeded to lecture the nurse. How long have you been here. It's long enough for you to know where to find stuff. Do you expect me to do your work. Finally, she pointed out where it was kept. And with a smirk, she began to turn around to leave. And I'm standing outside in the corridor watching, and it made no difference. The fact that a sick patient was being worked on made no difference. Well, I lit into her azz on behalf of that nurse. She was four weeks into her new position. But that wasn't all. The very next day, she's asking the ENT resident what to look for when dealing with my husband's wounds. And he too dismissed her. Once again, I had to jump in. Her questions were valid. A male nurse had shown me what he was supposed to look for in treating his extensive surgical wounds. Obviously, no one had told her. And it was deliberate. Now you've shown me that was not an isolated case.

I’m white (so I’m sure it’s worse for you) and this is exactly why I quit nursing school in my last year. Every single one of the nurses I did clinicals with were the most bitter, horrible, hateful people I had ever met. 3 hospitals, 3 different shifts- they were all the same. I did some soul searching and decided I didn’t want this to be my future. I ended up going into insurance and everyone I work with is happy as a lark. Glad I made the decision I did.

Girl and it seems to be the worst with females and effeminate men. I'm a flight attendant and same here. I will say my field isn't as toxic as I've heard about nursing however, we definitely have our own brand of toxicity in the air. Almost every junior flight attendant can easily tell you at least one story where a senior flight attendant made them cry due to bullying in the workplace. Myself had a senior flight attendant yelling at me front of passengers and literally pushing the drink cart into me cuz I was going to slow for her. I was so new and it was my very first international flight/service ever (which is a very involved and detailed service). Anyway and i have a friend who similar situation worked and international flight as a junior and had a senior mama ask if she was slow aka retarded because she didn't do something the specific way senior mama wanted it done. Made my very bright and sweet friend cry in the galley as she continued to push through her work. I'm almost convinced sadly to say that a female dominated work place is trash. We are our own worst enemy. Whether it's jealousy from older to younger women or what Idk. But we friggin suck like so much for female empowerment and sticking together. We are so quick to get snappy and rude and nasty. Like im legit looking into getting my pilots licence simply due to the fact that it's a male dominated field. I can't stand the way we don't know how to act like mature adults with each other and simply confront things professionally and not do that yik yak shit behind the back or just straight bully each other. It's wack AF!

My mother's first official job was as a RN in the 90s. The amount of bullying she indured from fellow black nurses and lead nurses/supervisors because she is African was disgusting. They hated the fact that she refused to engage in the weird, oversexualized, perverted conversations and rude, unprofessional gossip about the patients and other staff members that they would have in their little mean girl group. Constantly sabotaged her work and were jealous that the patients lovingly referred to her as the "little African doctor". It also got under their skin that she treated patients with kindness and didn't make them wait for no reason or belittle them. They eventually banned togther and got her fired and before leaving she cussed out all of them, which was surprising because my mama was extremely introverted at the time. Thankfully she meet my father shortly after and karma ate all them old hoes up.

@@jamaicangurle1 So when my mom was fired, she had a lawyer from the union. This lawyer was the worst on the planet. He was late everyday and when he showed up he had no idea what the case was about or what was going on so far. Then he would be rushing to leave early for his next case. The judge wasn't interested in the whole thing and ruled in favor of the hospital to fire my mama. The next day she went back there and cussed all of them out. She told the head nurse (who was the main bully) that she was going to drop dead. Then she let all them other hoes know that nothing good will come in their lives and that they will all suffer. About 2 months later my mama got a job at a daycare center. There was this 2 year old little Japanese boy that loved her so much and always followed her around. The boy's uncle (who is my dad) came to pick him up since his dad was working late. To make a long story short, they fell in love and got married. A year later, the head bully dropped dead from a heart attack. Alone in her apartment and nobody know until she started stinking. The other nurses ended up eventually getting fired themselves after a while. Some even had the nerve to contact my mom to apologize then turn around and beg for money. I've been a nurse in the ICU for four months now. New grad, coming into the field from another career. Within the several months, I already detected and experienced the level of toxicity on both day shift and night shift. It feels like a massive high school with the cliques and if you're not part of those cliques, you're outcast from assistance. I experienced a little less of it on nights so I opted to stay on that shift. Out of the six preceptors I had, two were extremely beneficial and cared about the growth of new nurses. Ironically, they were also the ones that were not assigned to a lot of new nurses. The ones that did micromanage, were passive-aggressive, and outright rude to not only me, but other orientees in front of other orientees, nurses, and even patients. Hearing your experience really hits the nail on the head with what I've experienced so far. I'm a male and a person of color that has experience in the public service field not related to healthcare and one of the other new grads I was hired with is an extremely smart woman of color with 20+ years of experience in healthcare. We're both constantly on guard and both of our experiences came down to us feeling the discrimination because of our background. Our group of new hires were even told by the educators that there WILL be nurses that we meet that we will want to keep on guard around and advocate for ourselves should a situation arise. You're right Kendra, keeping a record of events is necessary but it is extremely unfortunate that we have to do that among the stress of the job already. The ones that I found to be the most helpful are the travel nurses that float to our unit. Sorry for the long post, I needed to vent as well. Thank you very very much for sharing your experiences.

Nurses are unarguably the biggest part of a patient’s experience at hospitals. My worst experiences were night shift and ICU nurses. As a child in a Catholic hospital I had some truly angelic nurses, but most were evil. The chaplain would offer to pray with me, a 7 year old and proceed to tell me I was sick because I had sinned. That is my concern more than anything. Poor patient outcomes, as well as the degradation of the integrity of the profession, are huge risks when there is that kind of sabotage that takes place. I'm not a nurse, nor could I ever have the stamina to be one, but there was some toxicity throughout my clinical rotation as a student sonographer that either I myself experienced or that my classmates/colleagues had. I recognize the stress nursing can put one under--as much as I can without being a nurse myself--but it's a shame that such petty, hostile personalities exist in these professions of compassion and care, particularly when they occupy positions of power of some kind. With what I've seen and heard in my experiences as a student, it's pretty much become my goal to always treat any students or trainees with respect and with enthusiasm to teach them what I know... if ever I were to be in a position to train within my profession, that is. We should feel pride in and celebrate the respectability of our professions. Therefore we should feel duty enough to ensure that those we guide--traintees, orientees, students, etc--maintain that respectability ALONG WITH us. And that means recognizing and building on their value and potential and showing basic humanity to them as fellow colleagues ❤❤

It’s so very sad to hear of this type of behavior in the ICU. I’m a person who is admitted into the hospital a lot for my chronic illness. My foster daughter just completed her first year of nursing in the ICU. I was happily for her when she got that job because as a patient who has spent an average of 4 weeks per year in the hospital I’ve seen my share of nurses being bullied. I assumed it was different in the ICU because tending to seriously ill patients leaves no time for such foolishness. Boy was I wrong. My daughter recently confided to me that she’s ready to quit. It’s so sad to see these evil hearted nurses treat good nurses so wrong. I’m glad to hear that you’re happy where you are in life but I hope you can find a place back where you belong. Nurses eat their young, their old and everything in between! I have been a nurse for 47 years. I have tried all ways to approach situations. I have tried addressing the issue with the person involved but all you get is her and her nurse friends now increasing the bullying. You then have to watch your back at all times. They will tag team you if you go to supervisors, give you the absolute worst patient load, nit pick you to death and make your life miserable. I am afraid the orientee was probably right getting out of the hateful work situation. Leaving feedback as you leave and once in awhile something gets addressed if enough leaving staff leave the same complaints. Being black as well as hispanic will get you treated differently. I have been told to go get a mop and clean up, make coffee for your coworkers, etc. I worked too hard for my BSN and certifications to be treated as the unit or personal housekeeper. Working on today's specialty units feels like high school clique behavior. I have frequently experienced much less experienced nurses acting as if they know it all and you know little. I just chuckle in my head because they have no idea how much more you do know. It's refreshing when someone asks for help or suggestions when they tap into your vast knowledge. Hospitals are trying to make nurses a cookie cutter profession. Its more of an art when you get to use all you have learned to get the outcomes that excel. I know things that are not even mentioned in nursing school texts or seminars. I have learned so much through experience along with further formal education. If you get injured on the job don't expect an sympathy. You are now the enemy trying to milk the system. It is much easier to work than live with the conditions of workman's comp. Once you are trying to live on 50% of your previous income there is no money left to fight with a lawyer to get what you deserve. Hospitals have teams of lawyers and deep pockets to fight you in a court. Nursing is in a dismal place these days with much less benefits and respect than in days gone by. Today you are viewed as though you are just a daily worker. You get cancelled within two hours of your shift start and expected to be "on call" with no on call pay. Or you can start your shift and be sent home on call a couple of hours in to your shift with no on call pay. Long ago you had a set schedule and you worked that schedule. Nurses just can't get it together to unionize to get the help they need to get the system to help them to get appropriate workloads. I loved my patients but through the years some came to hospital with an entitled attitude that made things tougher. Thank god most patients appreciated you and that made it all worthwhile. I feel so bad for the new nurses coming into the system. I would have chosen another profession if I had known of all the abuse I would receive through all those years. If more nurses were like you then nursing would be a whole lot better. You are smart and have common sense to go with your education. Keep up the good work!

Your compassion and insight isn't just for young nurses! I went from decades of ICU and ER nursing into case management. I was bullied by the lead nurse, who not only lied to others about me, but failed to give me the tools for a sucessful orientation. I couldn't even articulate what had been going on as I was constantly shocked and humiliated. One day during my shift I was pulled into Personnel and accused of the most outrageous things. I was "lazy, unmotivated, and a liar!" 40 years of awards and excellent reviews from staff, managers, and patients suddenly meant NOTHING. I apparently went bad within 2 months?! GREAT advice on keeping a journal, as while you're being falsely accused it is extremely difficult to recall events. It's absolutely devastating how staff members in a caring career treat one another. I went back to 12 hour shifts in a trauma center, and despite starting back at age 60, that has been a cake walk by comparison! 1 more year until retirement, and I will dearly miss my patients. Keep up your fantastic work, and thank you for this video. ❤

The patient's family, his daughter, personally thanked me for whistleblowing. They sued HCR Manorcare. And I was fired through nefarious constructive discharge. I was injured at my next job when some idiot left a patients urine bag ubclamped, causing it to puddle all over. I worked 11pm-7am, it was night, didn't see the puddle in the dimly lit room. I fell and fractured my tailbone. I also hot a tirn rotstor cuff from lifting fat. Heavy patients alone, becayse the click nurses refused to do assist lifts fir my patients with me, even though I wojld help them with their patients. I stopped doing that. As a nurse, some students are absolutely draining. We are super busy and they want me to answer 100 questions so they can fill their clinical paperwork out. When I was in school I had to do that on my own by looking through the chart. They other side of that is they won’t leave the nurses station so follow me to round on my patients. It’s not my job to announce every time I leave the desk. I’m more than happy to help students, but when they lack motivation and seem uninterested, so do I. When I was in clinical, I went out of my way to make the nurses jobs easier, not harder. The younger generations are entitled and don’t want to go out of their way to help. I applaud what you said about black nurses being held back from attaining ICU experience and getting high paying jobs . I am a nurse with 42 years of experience . I thought about writing a book about my experiences as black nurse in the “70’s.” Even today, it is still a fact that older nurse eat their young. “Hostile work environment.” Is alive and true. As a black new RN in a New York hospital, I took a test to work in the Recovery room, I was told I failed the test, which I didn’t believe, so I asked the educator to review my test with me in the presence of my sister. After reviewing my test with the educator, she found that she had counted my score wrong and indeed I had passed the test. I decided not work that area because I felt they may try to sabotage my work. I felt they didn’t want me in that area. I have had to break barriers in the south as a black RN, especially, being the first black Director of Nurse in a nursing home, first nurse manager, nurse consultant etc. A Black RN with BSN was unheard of in the north or south during the 70s. I have bullied by White, Asian, and Black Nurses. Keep doing what you are doing. We must document, document and stand our ground. Turn the “lemon into lemonade.”

Racial and Gender hatred is real and some people are working there to have a little "fun" doing people wrong! Exposure will be the first step to stopping bad behavior! The AA nurses I encountered for two years never even spoke to me, can't say I wanted them to, but that's how I noticed something needs to happen and sooner rather than later! I was unjustly fired just to throw that in from Med-Surg Tele and Dialysis in Napa Valley, CA. I BBC was a CNA for 7 years in a small town hospital. I eventually got my LPN. No way would I step into an RN position. Many wonderful RN’s out there. I eventually worked in a University Hospital Clinic and experienced our RN’s turn into lazy and seat warmers. Always putting in overtime and have become very comfortable behind the computer screens. Their excuse to become the dictator and not the team player. Now…as a patient, as I have retired, it has crossed my mind that with all the vitriol about race now entering the medical field, how will the black nurses respond to white patients. Just a question. Any discussion on this? You, seem very very fair so I’m just asking as now, retired and a white former LPN.

There’s also bullying in the Emergency Department I work at. There are clicks and mean girls who work there and a lot of times, I overhear them talking about other staff specially the new grads and to me this is unacceptable. Just because they have been working there for 4 years, it doesn’t mean they should look down on the new RNs and think that the new hired nurses should know everything when they just graduated. We should help them since we are in the same team. I don’t understand this kind of treatment as we are all in healthcare who help heal patients and need to make them feel safe and comfortable in our care. I pray these people will have some reality check that we are all Christ’s children and we need to come together as one and not hate one another. Great video!❤

As a RN for 38yrs,I can't tell you how much of a relief it is to be retired. Nursing has changed so much throughout the years. I wanted to be a nurse since I was 6 yrs old and had my tonsils out. I vowed to not be a nurse like the one caring for me. All of these years later, I remember her name was Mrs Ward. She was mean and threatened to send my mother home if I didn't start drinking more. Things were different when I started my first job. It was a much different pace. Throughout the years the responsibilities became more and more, the demands more difficult. But in addition, the environment within certain areas became more and more toxic, particularly for new staff. The staff, nurses and CNA's were a clique who ostracized people who had different values. Many were lazy, and did minimal patient care, spending the majority of their shift socializing or using their phone. If you were a good nurse or CNA, they were not welcoming and talked negatively of the other staff. Women in particular, when in a group are toxic and mean. Many are intimidating. The toxic nature of nursing has taken it's toll on the wellness of patients. The amount of stress felt in these environments can be debilitating. I loved being a nurse, and my patients. I miss working, and miss many of my colleagues, but I don't miss the tension. Years ago, people became nurses because they had the desire and heart of a nurse. In later years, with the nursing shortage, many became a nurse for job availability and income, but should NOT have become a nurse. Many don't have the intelligence, but others are not in it for the right reasons and are lazy, and downright nasty, rude and disrespectful. This does not make for a good work environment, but what is really unfortunate is that some behave this way towards their patients. When good nurses report this, they are intimidated and often treated poorly enough they feel the need to leave for their mental and physical health. Thank you for this article, and for being the type of nurse you are. Keep up the good work and help to weed out the "mean girls".

I started nursing school in 1973, bullying was rampant. Unfortunately it wasn’t one ethnicity vs another, the clicks were there and rampant. When I started in MotherBaby, newborn nursery the staff nurses who were typically Diploma trained hated those of us who went on to get a BSN. I had Nursing Assistants who were African American who felt it was okay to comment-on everything I did- they were shocked “ we are surprised you no how to bath a baby”. It was demoralizing.

Nurses are why I left the medical field as a lab tech. They were the most arrogant, gossiping & lazy individuals at the medical facilities I worked at with no consequences. I experienced the same as a patient. ( in college recovering from SA & just buried my father my nurse proceeded to tell the entire floor why I was in the hospital. She also had so many smart comments towards me as a broken 20 year old. This is why ppl don’t seek medical help. ) It went from a passion to a thing that I vowed to stay far away from because of the culture.

Maan, I don't miss this. Your assessment of Black nurses is correct. We're quiet, observant, guarded, ESPECIALLY when we're limited in numbers. I will also tell you, CRNA training was no different for me. My efforts were never good enough, even the top girl in our class (also black) was treated unfairly. It was infuriating since I knew for a fact my counterparts had different experiences. Well, rumors quickly spread. Needless to say, things didn't work out for me. But the other thing about many black women, we're accustomed to treatment disparities. We may shed a tear but quickly bounce back and keep it moving. Now I'm a PMHNP and much happier with my current path.

I can relate to so much of this story. I'm an ICU nurse and I started out my career as a brand new RN in the ICU. I was told as a student that quote "Nurses eat their young." I thought this was a joke, but I found out it wasn't. Most of the RNs made it very clear they did not want to be paired with a student. Their attitudes made it very difficult to learn. Ever since I got through my training several years ago, I've been extra nice to my students. I allow them to do just about everything(with my guidance) so they get real experience. I've had students tell me that I was an answer to prayer, because they prayed they would get a nice nurse that day. It's so tough when you start out. Good for you for advocating for the young RN. We need more open discussions about these topics. Thank you for shedding light on this issue.

I worked in Cardiovascular ICU after several years of oncology (including Bone Marrow Transplant). Although most of the nurses would kill to get a "fresh ❤ " (CABG, any open heart straight from the OR), I found some would assign a fresh heart to someone who was intimidated by them just to watch that nurse squirm.... I feel some ppl learn from the bottom up & others from the top down. She would have benefitted from older ones & progressing towards the goal of the fresh hearts. I feel she was a caring nurse who probably got washed out early on. I want good ppl like her out there to care for me.... Not the evil ppl who think they know everything & have ALL of the answers.

Teaching is very very similar. The cliques, the rumors, the trysts, the favoritism and nepotism, no transparency with the parents. It's appalling behavior for people who are supposed to be educated. It's the good, the bad and the ugly, and I'm not just talking about teachers, this applies to coordinators, and administrators too. Humans are very dominant and want to slay a vulnerable subject in any social or professional setting. If humans are not able to enlighten that part of the brain and understand that cooperation is needed to be copacetic, then the previously mentioned behaviors will occur. I'm not saying I am enlightened, but it is something I have observed in my time with others. I never am part of the clique. I am always outside, so I have gotten bullied many a time. I learned to keep to myself, do my job and not let the comments affect me. Water off a ducks back. This is the reason why I like to keep my distance from the crowds.

I was hoping to gain some knowledge and advice but got ignored and felt like I was bothering the nurse that I was shadowing. It wasn't just that one nurse but a few nurses at different times. I later heard the same complaint from other students about the same hospital and the same unit. However, this was not my whole clinical rotation experience. I have met some real friendly nurses, some like you, willing to teach. There is workplace drama at every job, but nursing alone is a stressful job. The extra stress is not needed.

It was witnessed by my kids how mean they were. Their attitudes changed when i told them i was a nurse. I reported the nurses that were mean, to the director of nurses n my doctors.I wrote a review naming them to the chief executive of the hospital. And how i was treated there. I was bullied at a few hospitals i worked at. Alot of staff nurses resented me because i made more than them as an independant contractor. Sometimes the charge nurses would assign me all the worst patients on the floor anx stretch me over 3 seperate hallways. Once i was 7 mos pregnant, they assigned me the patient with aides, another tuberculosis, and and another with mrsa. . In one night. I'm not a nurse, I used to be a server at a nursing home though and I don't think I've ever experienced so much workplace bullying before. There was supposed to be one nurse in the dining room at all times to monitor dietary restrictions and to make sure nobody choked, but one day none of the nurses were there and I accidently gave a diabetic man a glass of orange juice, when a nurse finally showed up she was livid with me for not knowing the medical information of every single resident. The cliques really bothered me too because the nurses would always just stand around talking to each other instead of helping the residents, sometimes the old people would get tired of waiting for nurses and would ask me half a dozen times to help them go to the bathroom. It honestly made me so mad to see nurses ignore those old people even after they asked for help.

I've been CNA for 20 years, I mostly have done private duty. Until I moved from New York to Florida...I worked 2 years at a Nursing and rehabilitation center..the nurses tried to talk to me with all sort of disrespectful tones, I was not having it, I'd speak to them women to women, you are not and will not disrespect me..demanding, no compassion for the residents, only sit at the nurses station eat and pass meds. It was horrible, ..

I was heavily bullied and targeted by my clinical instructor while in a patient’s room. By the end of her scolding, I was barely holding it together. The patient was watching all this in horror and started comforting ME. I should’ve been the one comforting the patient because they were told of an unfortunate diagnosis a few days ago. It’s messed up when the violence is so commonplace.

Agreed …..the newer nurses have a different work ethic….too busy at their computers and on their personal phones…dump a lot on the aides…seems that is beneath them to get up from the computer and answer the call bell or simply get a patient a ginger ale….they will spend more time contacting the aide than just taking a minute to take the ginger ale to the patient….hence then the patient is unhappy because the aide is doing other things and doesn’t get the ginger ale right away while the nurse sits and doesn’t take the initiative to just get up and answer the call.

And this is why there's a nursing shortage. Thank you so much for sharing this story because as a nursing student ( practical nurse) working on transitioning to the RN program next year, I can see this kind of behavior already in class as well as clinicals so much so that I've considered going the physician assistant route. The bullying really scares me because I've worked in an environment before that was toxic, where was bullied and I don't want to start a new career experiencing that again. That kind of thing really takes a toll on your psyche. I hate to be negative but I've been there before, the problem stems from the top. The manager and the educator to whom you've reported the situation to, could have intervened and they did not and will not. That young lady's license was on the line, if these ladies can go as far as giving false evaluations about her, imagine what else they could have done. Rejection is direction, something better awaits her. Please stay in touch with her and continue to encourage her. We need more nurses like you.

This is real& yes their careers have been destroyed/blackballed because of the bullies were reported. The bullies won. Those who lost the jobs/careers were kind/passionate helping patients but the bullies who give bad service to staff/customers won. The ones that survived to avoid bullying, it has gotten to them that they are now a bitter RN that's snaps at everyone near before going to work. I stay away from her on her work days. Lol

I'm not a nurse, however I have been a healthcare assistant. That's the equivalent of a nursing assistant in the US I think. The same toxicity applies, I think. I think of myself as a compassionate person. I loved looking after people. I loved helping them and bringing them comfort during such a difficult time. However I had senior nurses and management constantly on my case. I spent half an hour sitting with a lady who was dying. I'd done everything I needed to do, and this lady wanted to sit and talk to me. She was in pain, and I was holding her hand. Senior nurse came in and questioned why I wasn't doing some inane job that didn't really need doing. I said because I'm sat with the lady I was caring for and listening whilst she drinks her tea. I was told I wasn't paid to waste time. I quit on the spot. That was just the last straw for me. I'd had months of bullying, snide comments and criticism for nothing. I once cleaned out the linen cupboard and put the bath towels and hand towels the wrong way round on the shelf and I got a 15 minute lecture. I'd only been in the job a month, so of course I wasn't sure where everything went. I still think about that lady. When she died, I saw the notice of the funeral and went. I was the only person who looked after her who turned up. Her daughter said her mum talked about me all the time when she visited. Apparently I was the only one who listened to her and didn't get frustrated.

I am one of those diploma nurses, trained in a major hospital in Canada 36 years ago. You are sooo right about needing experience before you can teach or supervise others. Other nurses, white, black, or any race can be cruel and bully others who strive to be above the norm. Sometimes the hardest thing about nursing is not the practice of nursing, it is dealing with the nurses who need to make others look bad so they look good. You are an amazing advocate for the profession. Thank You

So right! It takes years to build up knowledge and skills from working in a field. Not every situation or patients are the same.Having alot of experience is more helpful to teach newer ppl the skills and what to expect.Because there's a lot of unexpected things you have to be ready for. It's a job that can affect your mental health if your not prepared to face loosing patients, talking with distraught family members and having to give bad news sometimes. It can take a toll on you from the long hours and changing of shifts. To your sleep habits and eating habits.Your home family life esp with children. It's not an easy job when your devoted to helping ppl.You sometimes sacrifice more than you receive. It will definitely make or break you to question if this is the right job you want to do or something else.

As a over 30 years retiree I can vouch for what you have said in this video !!! I graduated from a 3 year diploma program way back in the day!!! As you said we lived on campus and worked every day in the hospital and had clinical studies as well. As the years progressed I noticed a change in the attitude of my fellow nurses. We had always worked as a team but now it was everyone for himself!!! Who could make you look incompetent because the norm !!! In my last years of working I was belittled by my supervisor and told that I didn’t know how to do things that I had done for years !! She even had new grads following me to try and catch me making an error !!! The environment was so stressful and toxic !!! Nursing definitely isn’t what it should be anymore!!! It is all political and only people who have a tough skin and can play the game will survive!!! 😢

@@faithleah1981 I worked in a state psychiciatric hospital...NE FL state hospital (sister hospital to Chattahoochee) the place should be demolished...its a full hospital for medical and psych treatment...I was cornered in a med room and threatened for reporting a narcotic discrepancy by the RN who trained me when first hired...that was 2011 and I quit when nothing was done about it...the nurse who threatened to catch me in the parking lot is now their DON...if the state of Florida uses the property for anything other than a psych hospital the state must return the land to the family who donated it so nothing is really done about the abuses to both patients and staff... I cried everyday while driving to work there...if you already have cptsd don't think of psych nursing...its easy work for anyone who doesn't gaf but obviously you chose nursing for all the right reasons...I dont even know what subset to suggest for you because they all come with toxic work environments...maybe you could look at something within a lawfirm or insurance company where nursing judgement is needed outside of the established medical industry...I moved to a different state job in a skilled nursing facility for veterans because I wanted the state pension plan...it was less toxic than the psych hospital but still toxic...I retired but not before I was utterly disgusted with whole industry...I made a med error at my very first nursing job...reported myself...then watched my supervisor go into the room and administer a bit more morphine to the patient in front of the family that I had already given too much morphine to and say to the family this is expected (pt was just sleeping I only slightly overdosed but I was traumatized by my mistake) at this stage....I never went back thought I was gonna give up nursing contacted that supervisor a week later to express my sorrow for my error and check on the pt (I was terrified that I might of killed her) she basically laughed and told me the pt had the best rest she'd ever had not to stress over it anymore

Yup I’m a nail tech pretty much all the medical industry they are rude and nasty especially the nurses and they think “burn out” is an excuse lol… I think anybody who works in 2023 is burnt out…. No excuse to be nasty especially in healthcare to a PATIENT who is PAYING thousands!!! We have nothing to do with the nurse to patient ratio or whatever is causing them to have crappy days in the field 🙄😒..I had a baby last year and it cost $32,000 NATURAL! the cna thought it was a good idea to put my tray of food at the front door on the trash can while I’m hooked up to iv’s smh I said NOTHING😒😒😒 later I had asked for saltines cuz I felt nauseous…. Do you know her big behind said “here can you catch” and leaned backed and tossed them into my bed and onto the floor like 4 packs of crackers……. That’s exactly why I steer away from the hospital, nurses are so mean and cruel hearted and I don’t know who is doing the “training” these days but the majority of them suck!!! they just wanna wear the tight scrubs to snap some pics for the gram and put in they bio that they’re a nurse 🤦🏽‍♀️ but they don’t wanna actually do the work that is required to be a healthcare professional…it’s actually ridiculous!!!! Healthcare in America is a complete joke and scam!
