The waves aren't gravity, they're disturbances in the space-time continuum due to black holes spiraling into each-other. The black holes spiraling into each-other caused the amount of gravity to oscillate. The way they detected this is because gravity is essentially changing what moving in a straight line means. A change in distance is what they measured, and this proves the idea that gravity too moves at the speed of light (although it's not really the speed of light since light can go slower than the speed of light in a vacuum, it's more like "the speed of causality"). Gravity causes time dilation too due to changing what a straight line means also changing what "the speed of causality" means, so I think this is what changed the distance, the light moved an extremely tiny bit slower thus making it measure a longer distance. I like physics, so that's why I bothered to write this.

Paul Ngo Light *can* go slower than "the speed of light in a vacuum moving in a straight line" because light moves slower in dense mediums due to weird quantum physics stuff I don't understand (this slowing down I think might be the cause of refraction and reflection). It would just be a lot easier/more efficient to call "the speed of light" "the speed of causality" since that's what we really mean and it fits nicely with "c for the speed of causality"

Don't confuse the discovery of gravitational waves with "gravity is a wave". Light and anything else on the EM spectrum is a wave. But I wouldn't say gravity is a wave. You can block electromagnetic waves and make them interfere with each other. You can't block gravity. It is constant. You can always feel it. But you can block light, hence darkness. Gravitational waves are ripples or disturbances within the matter of space-time, which literally causes atoms to move apart from each other and back again but by very small sub-atomic distances. Gravitational waves =/= gravity is a wave.......
