I love vids like this Nutn'! I am 1 month shy of 19, and I can tell you that I do believe that because of the way I was raised, I am better prepared than many almost twice my age. My father tought me from the age of 6 to hunt, fish, shoot, build fire, camp, keep safety in mind, work hard and how to treat others (and in some ways, how not to act). My point is that my father, you and all the dads like you are what we as children truly need. So thank you to you and all the other dads who do this.

I won't say that I've really ever roughed it, but I have been taught that I can reap the fruits of my labor, and that hard work pays off. Working on my truck for a whole summer sanding and painting taught me a lot about the benefits of a good work ethic and devotion. Nutn, your parenting videos will be a GREAT resource to me in the coming years when I have children of my own.

I have been blessed to use Video Games as a "rainy day boredom killer" and to have passed the skill acquiring mindset to my little brother and cousins. Now at 26 and my brother and cousins getting to be 20, we have shared some awesome times. Climbing, hiking, learning black smithing. Trying survival trips with knives we made. Awesome stories and awesome times outside of video games.

Raised 4 boys and two girls. Video games were a non stop battle. We moved to a farm, then hard work, Horses for the girls and motorsports for the boys helped. But how many can do that? Now we have a 11yr Airforce vet, a 7yr Navy vet. A National champion (college level), One college student with 4yrs of NCAA division one sports and two independent young men busting their ass to build families. Advise? You can't push a string. Find what comes from their hearts and support it unconditionally.

Nutn, you and Bugget set a perfect tone. Most fathers of our generation wrestle with these issues. I took Beachhead to hear Lt. Colonel Dave Grossman recently, and he hit video games pretty hard. When his grandbabies were born, he gave $1,000 for college for each year the parents avoided TV exposure for the grandkids! He agreed to let me record a quick message to Sheepdogs, but if you ever get the chance, we would LOVE it if you interviewed him!

I really hope I can give my three sons the experiences my parents afforded me. We lived out in nowhere, with the nearest neighbor a mile away. My brother and I had free reign of the local fields, pastures, and creeks. Sure, we got hurt sometimes, but I will ALWAYS have those memories. Finding a house in a location like that is so much more difficult now than it was 20 years ago, but that's my goal.

I've seen a lot of this in my sister's upbringing, she's older than me and was babied and is now 21 in college, living off of my father's monetary teat and continually tells me she's "scared" of the responsibilities she's being given. It's sad to see, she's been completely screwed over big time.

This reminds me of an argument we had at my old cadet unit. Some of the staff wanted us to waste money on new computers for the units for the kids to use. That they didn't get my argument that kids (and their parents expect them to) come here to do stuff. Real stuff. Sail. Shoot. Real stuff. That they didn't get what I was saying spoke volumes about their quality as youth leaders. After I left they spent thousands on new computers. The unit hasn't been on one camp since the purchase.

Well said video. I have this "discussion" with my wife, but she never understands since we were raised completely different. I was raised in rural Iowa and she was raised in sunny California. It's tough though since we're raising or kids in a suburb of Dallas. My boys can't live like I did. The comment about not letting your kids walk to school alone is dead on. With all the crazies or there I am afraid for them. Sometimes I feel I am failing as a parent, but I keep trying to prepare them

I grew up in Oklahoma and by age 10 I was allowed to go hunting by myself with my 22 and could bring home food. I was a Boy Scout and a Explorer Scout and love to camp and learned many skills. I am 70 now and brushing up on all those skills again! Stay Strong!

I grew up on a cattle ranch in Georgia. I went to school with kids who lived in a nearbye town. I never thought of my way of life as abnormal for many years. I got my first rifle when I was 7 and it was almost never out of reach. I learned about life, death, hard work, love, hate, and integrity while living the country life. I was faced with important deciscions sometimes and lots of resonsibility. I used to walk fence rowe for people and help tend cattle.

Video games are what put me at a high school reading level in 6th grade, back when you had to read most games. And they still help with vocabulary today. They are what kept me away from drugs and stupid situations. with proper parenting, your child should be able to play games, go hiking, or even go partying, yet still have the understanding of being responsible and knowing whats right and wrong.

Just have to day Nutn, that was a great video on advice. I found myself nodding and agreeing with you, every time you made a point, all while holding my five month old son, putting him to sleep. I started teaching my daughter around eighteen months to respect firearms, now at three she doesn't think twice when she sees them. She just says o it's daddy's guns. I'm proud to say she has fired her first fun a marlin .22 lever action and enjoys every time we go out. Thank you again

Variation on a theme - the parents are involved. The thought was kids, left to their own devices, without parental involvement (or another important adult) often are influenced by a lot of things. Video games are the modern, wide-spread activity/hobby for many kids. For kids 30 years ago, it was TV. 5000 years ago, a story/parable was cut into stone saying (basically), "Stop wasting your life on the street corner with your friends, doing nothing and just spending your days without purpose."

This was spot on, anything can become an addiction if "consumed" too much. Video games, sports, guns, drugs, etc. There needs to be a balance in life. Refusing the allow children to play video games is also a bad thing, our nation is moving more and more towards a service based economy, children need to know how to use electronic devices or they will fail to succeed.

One thing that I had to contend with was distance. I lived out in the country and I spent my time playing games because there was no one else to play with, and you could only explore so much space before you saw everything, or it was just too cold or too hot. I don't mean mild hot, I mean highs upward to 106 and lows as far as -2 or so in the winter with windchills as low as -20. My kids are the same way, when it's nice outside we go outside and do things, when it's miserable we stay in.

I believe that you can use video games to learn things. I played Forza 3 and 4 for so long that I no longer have to think about correcting oversteer. The first time I drove in the rain, I floored it when I was going to turn to give these kids on the corner a nice exhaust note. The rear end started sliding and I corrected it without thinking about it.

I'm about to turn 21 years old and I grew up in the generation you speak about. On the topic of videogames: When I first started playing videogames like Gameboy and Super Nintendo, gaming was different. In my neighborhood there were about 5 or 6 other boys and we played until the sun went down; only then the video games were played. I got into the whole WoW phase for a few years and since starting college my lifestyle has digressed back to outdoorsy roots. I can't even think of playing Wow.

My dad is an awesome, patient man that taught me a lot of important values. But he has never been an outdoorsman. I grew up in a home and community that simply had no interest in outdoorsmanship. Online gaming is where I found a place and acceptance, where people value me. I still play because that's where I'm loved. A regular outdoor lifestyle is too hard to do alone. But since I was 14 Nutn has been there fostering my interest in craftsmanship, marksmanship and manhood from states away.

Isn't that the great thing though? Those who do not see a problem or have no will to change their actions are in trouble. Even though you grew up with protectionist parents, you set your mind toward working towards your goals. I think this is great proof that if we have bad habits, bad parents, or even a bad household environment; in the end our actions are what matter and the rest is only a temporary state that we can rise above. I am also 21 and I have a lot to learn as well. -Solanum20

having come from America to live in a state where self defense is not only discouraged but criminalized, i can say i feel your pain brother. Freedom is truly precious when you have lived without it.

I would totally travel south to do some videos with you...Been backpacking and shooting my whole life, and I love the stuff you do. Been a follower since 2008 but only just decided to get a youtube channel. I remember the first time you showed your face, it was almost like an unveiling, hahaha. Keep up the awesome work!

Glad to see you both had time to get together, always enjoyable when you do. Touched on some good points and I'm a person who didn't have some of the things you talked about but after meeting my wifes family and learning how to take care of my needs as we raised our daughters they now know how to get by. It's funny watching them with their boyfriends who think they're tough and macho and the girls are showing them how to build shelter and fires, and even properly shoot and handle firarms.

Video games were an addiction for me as a teenager. I barely graduated high school (I thank my willing teachers for helping me). Now that I'm an adult, I understand the need for hard work, thankfully.
