NuTone IM4406 CD Players - Are They Repairable?

I just installed my replacement speaker for my intercom and it works great; loud and clear. Now my son and I can play with it :)

I have to commend you on this video. I like the way you did the video. Very informative and straightforward. Honesty is indeed the best policy. That appears to not only be the way you do your videos, but also the way you do business. I bought a house that already had one of these Nutone monstrosities in it. I knew going in that the thing did not work. I still bought the house because of other redeeming qualities. I will be watching your other videos and most likely contacting you directly to see if we can get it do anything. You also get a "Like" and "Subscribe". Keep up the good work!

Hi, terrific video. I have a nutone system like this. My CD player was very picky about which discs it would read. Most weren’t read. Other you tube videos have some success by adjusting a potentiometer that controls the laser power. After watching this video which says there is not much chance of fixing it I said what do I have to loose. I tweaked the two blue pots that are visible on the top left (the power supply part to the right side)of the cd control card about 10 ??degrees clockwise. It works for now. (Counter clockwise didn’t work and even the more reliable discs wouldn’t play.) These 2 pots can be reached without gutting the unit to pull out the cd unit.

Hi Eric: I am unclear on which "other videos" you are referring to, I don't find any such videos - I would never recommend blindly adjusting pots without knowing exactly what you're doing. If they are related to the power that drives the laser-diode , you can easily kill the laser -diode with to much voltage. - Chris

Given that there is no authentic way to repair these CD players, would it be possible to retrofit the guts of a new player into the body of the NuTone CD player? To that end, would modifying it into a DVD player be a possibility? -- We have a lot of DVDs, but can't use them on the Nutone, which is a bummer, so I was thinking of retrofitting the DVD mechanist into a (2nd) CD body. Would that be a possibility?

Hi Calixto: Unfortunately what you suggest would be impossible to do. It is much easier to install an External Audio Jack on your IM4404 and use it to connect any type of modern audio source to your system. Here's a link to our Video on how to do this - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYauq2B6hdN0ipY Chris

No longer a cd fan but I wouldn't mind interfacing an optical drive that could also read and play mp3s or maybe even a dvd with that capability. So the question id, could I have an external unit that would be permanently wired to the internal cd (or tape) input and still have the aux capability hooked up to something else?

Hi Steve: The IM / IMA4406 has 2 auxiliary inputs which can be used to connect 2 external devices to the IM / IMA4406. The type of external devices can be any modern type of device except for a phonograph. - Chris
