Dr. Bonnie Kaplan PhD explains evidence-based nutritional interventions for improving brain health, including using micronutrients for the treatment and prevention of mood disorders. “What if the key to treating mental illness can’t be found at the pharmacy, but instead lies in the very foods we eat?” -The Better Brain
Dr. Kaplan is Professor Emerita from the University of Calgary and Co-author of the book, The Better Brain. She is an incredibly engaging speaker and her accomplishments and publications are too many to begin to name. I cannot say enough about the high quality research she has done, and the value that this body of work brings to the conversation we need to be having regarding the importance of using micronutrients to support children and adults of all ages and walks of life in prevention and treatment of mental health issues.

Interesting and informative. As a former Home Economics teacher, I taught cooking and nutrition in the schools, and used what are now vintage guidelines of the Canada Food Guide. It was tragic to me, that the government, during the last revision of Canada's Food Guide, was significantly guided by stakeholders. Stakeholders are the people who lobby, who have an invested interest in making a profit from food in some way or another. The ONLY stakeholders in human nutrition are the people who eat food. The public was invited to provide feedback, but as individuals of little political important to governments compared the the powerful input of stakeholders. It is also tragic to me that the subject of Home Economics is all but missing in our education system. I taught my young students the basics of nutrition and food preparation. Their time with me left them with the information and skills needed to make healthy choices. By the time my children were in the Ontario public school system, Home Economics had degenerated into an elective taught by teachers untrained in food and nutrition but for self-training, which was at best unreliable, at worst full of opinionated misinformation. It almost seemed to me as if the government were trying to cripple the health of children. The advent of social media has not improved the situation, as a plethora os self-defined experts have emerged with profit agendas, and are believed and widely quoted as sources of "facts". I with you all the luck in the world influencing our governments and corporations to acknowledge the damage to human health that has emerged in the food supply.

Thanks. This recalls a talk/podcast by Prof. Felice Jacka (referenced in this talk) from a year or so ago, which compliments this presentation by Dr. Kaplan. Her focus, I believe, was on mental health and diet. My personal experience with diet (similar Dr. Kaplan's recommendations - but maybe more plant based with a little fish) for the last 10 years (late 60s now) has played a huge role in maintaining my physical and mental health.

When I was young I thought the most important thing in life was money. Then as I got older I realized physical health was the most important thing. I reasoned physical health was even more important than family because if a person gets sick then your family has to take care of you and you are a burden. However, as I have gotten even older I realized the most important thing is not physical health but mental health. We can overcome and survive and even thrive if we have a physical ailment. There are many successful people who have physical disabilities. But if we have poor mental health it will destroy all of our efforts at a successful happy life. Now that I am much older I realize mental health is something we should strive to achieve and promote our whole life. Unfortunately, there is very little attention thought or discussion about how a person can achieve better mental health. In fact, we are embarrassed and afraid to talk about mental health. I can't think of a better subject for a video on KZbin and I'm so happy you gave Dr. Kaplan an opportunity to share her knowledge on the subject. I hope you continue to have more videos on the subject.

When our son was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder rather than take the prescription we got a product called learning factors. The change was instant and dramatic. He graduated with honours from university and is a successful young man. Thank goodness for our health food store called quarter master who told us about learning factors that had been developed by a doctor with a son with similar symptoms. We are well by the way. Home made balanced meals are important to us.

Dr. Kaplan provides valuable information about diet and mental health by way of brain function. I have been watching your videos and enjoying them. The harsh realities for KZbin channels is that a producer needs to be laser focused on defining the audience and understanding their capabilities. Your channel appears to be focused on health professionals or extremely well informed, educated consumers. It is unclear. This limits the number of people who will be reached by your videos. Another harsh reality of KZbin is that longer videos - independent of quality of content - tend to have lower views. As a graduate school instructor and public speaker of 30 years, I try to limit my content to 25 minutes or less. Intellectually, I understand that some content may not neatly fit into a shorter format. In that case, there is a Part I and a Part II. The long-form content provides no benefit to those who do not have the time, the attention span or patience to watch it. You’re providing a great service to those who will listen. I believe that your content should reach the maximum number of viewers possible. It will improve people’s lives. In presenting to audiences, I first tell them what they are going to learn; I then tell them in detail; and then I tell them what I told them. Where applicable, I summarize how the audience can use the information. Your video with Dr. Kaplan concluded with this clarity. I hope that you take my comments and supportive and constructive. I like your channel. I believe the content deserves a larger viewership.

You make some interesting points. I will take these into consideration. My hope is that the channel will help the health conscious consumer to receive credible, evidence-based information that will help them advocate for their health. Though I make the videos and conduct the interviews with the public audience in mind, I do have healthcare professionals who tune in to the content as well. Defining a niche, which I think is what you are suggesting is something I have considered often. As a Pharmacist, this is a bit difficult as our knowledge spans such a wide array of topics. We are seen as medication specialists but there is really so much more to how we can help people based on the knowledge we have. I appreciate the thoughtful feedback. If the channel appears confusing to the viewer, then this is something that needs to be addressed. Thank you for the comment.
