In Marine Corps training, all recruits had to purchase "skin so soft" and alcohol. We mixed 50/50 as a mosquito repellent and it seemed to work well. Did nothing to stop the sand fleas though!

It was "suggested" to bring Skin So Soft when I hit PI in 1980. The 50/50 mix must have evolved in the decades since. Willing to give that a try, thanks! Sand fleas are straight from the pits of hell.

Traditional Aleppo olive oil soap helps stop sandflies and mosquitoes. Costs $2/bar. Lather up all body parts. You can even use it instead of shampoo if you don't have hair dye on your hair. Use it once daily. I learned about it while working at an international school in Iraq. Make sure it is 100% olive oil as sometimes it is called Alleppo soap but has palm oi. You really want 100% olive oil. It is ok if the soap has bay/laurel added. Great soap for eczema/rosacea/psoriasis if you aren't allergic to olives. Google it first to see what it looks like. Buy in any Muslim store as much cheaper than mail order. The soap does smell faintly of olives and the bar will change color over time as you use it. I've used it since 2008 and get compliments on my "great skin". Lol I don't even need a moisturizer. Great soap.

Since lemon eucalyptus works so well, I have less use for DEET than ever. Permathrin does the heavy lifting of the parasite protection I need.

As long as people clean their hands and don't chug it, it seems reasonable to use deet in high risk areas. I wonder about a mix of lemon eucalyptus oil + DEET now. Might have a nice smell plus push back nasty bites. Though, we might also gain a lot of intel from just stuying people that never get bitten like myself vs those that attract the beasts. Now, everyone will agree we need something for sandflies and horse flies, those are straight hell beasts

Got bitten by a horsefly two months ago I managed to flick it off quickly because of the pain it was causing. However the scar and bump on my leg where it broke the skin is still significant. Apparently only the females bite and they actually cut the skin and try to suck your blood and they do this for the protein to be able to then reproduce….?

Yikes. Anything that can destory plastics or fabrics definitely does not seem safe to put on skin

It seems deet must have such a corner on the market that they can control the narrative. I hiked the pct and in oregon one spot was so bad hikers kept moving quickly to keep clouds of mosquitos at bay and were getting injured. I would throw up my tent just to eat lunch. Hundreds of mosquitos would follow me in but it was a contained area to finish them off. In desperation I used deet one day and it did work but the plastic melting thing was so worrisome. I kept myself covered and used a headnet of course, but they were incidious. The most dangerous "predator" in the wild are ticks, tho.

Last time I checked your skin is not made of plastic or oil-based fabrics lol You are mixing an intuition vs facts. If there is no evidence of any danger, the fact that it can melt plastic does not mean it can be harmful to you if used correctly. Same for terpentine, acetone, etc.

Doesn’t feel good indeed but Coca cola also « digests» meat in a glass, yet it doesn’t dig holes in anyone’s stomach. Go figure 😉

@@abderrahimbenmoussa4359 acetone and terpentine are definitely toxic to skin, idk what your point is here. Just because it doesn't melt skin doesn't mean it's non-toxic. Any liquid that is highly corrosive on *any* material shouldn't be put on skin as a general rule imo. Sure the benefits might outweigh the detriments for some people but that doesn't mean it's safe per se. Safety as defined by the FDA is more of a risk analysis. For example, pharmaceuticals are "safe," but take enough of any pill and you're dead.

Lemon Eucalyptus. You can find 30% solutions all over the market. Or make your own if you're into mixing essential oils and such. I bought some 100% just for that purpose.
