Here in England almost all our watercress is grown in Hampshire using fresh water from chalk streams. Fresh packed, it usually arrives at a supermarket withing 24 hours of harvesting (the fresher the better!). Its an ecologically sustainable crop here too - even growing in the middle of the English winter. Just serve with some cracked black pepper, lime juice and finely diced cucumber. Delicious!

Fun fact. That oxidative damage is what drives exercise induced adaptations. It’s what makes you fitter.
@Benevolence44 жыл бұрын
I thought the breaking down of muscle fibers and elevation of cardiovascular activity are what make you fitter, while the oxidative damage is generally harmful to your body? 🤔 oxidation is not a biologically beneficial process so far as I am aware!

There are studies demonstrating that the expression of enzymes associated with post-exercise recovery is suppressed by antioxidant supplementation, but NOT by eating antioxidant rich food. Antioxidant foods give you reduced oxidative stress without impacting the post-exercise benefits, best of both worlds.

An excellent video - as usual! I do a lot of running and used to use chocolate milk preparations to get carbs' and protein as a recovery in the 30 minutes after training sessions...given that exercise usually creates oxidative stress and unhealthy free-radicals, could this be substituted with something like almond milk and cacao powder/nibs? This would hopefully tick all the boxes noted above.

I believe oxidative stress during exercise is highly beneficial as say compare to ingesting traffic fumes and cigarette smoke. Our cells maybe damaged by the exercise BUT positive adaptoations do occur over time and the negative effect is only ever temporary with regards to exercise. Testing the ultrmarathoners IMMEDIATELY AFTER A RACE is good and well.. BUT the human body adapts the days/weeks after so any perceived 'damage' is non existent. Optimum balance is critical. I love watercress.

Just exercise. Oxidative stress is necessary to drive an adaptive response. I love Greger’s content and have all his books, but fitness is just not his thing. Can’t be an expert in everything I guess.

Your body *stores* anti oxdants like any other compound. You want to be sure to consume daily anti oxidants if you are exercising in your life, that prevents DNA damage that does not help in athletic recovery. Some damage is needed to enduce recovery. But what he is describing is DNA damage above that damage require. If anti oxidants did harm exercise results, you could study two groups (on eating anti-oxidants and one not), and the anti oxidant group would get less response from the training. We dont find that in the number of studies done comparing those groups. We find the opposite: Less soreness, quicker recovery, better results. Just eat a healthy diet with anti oxidants, those will be stored and then released during exercise to help combat the damage being done that is above the normal damage required for the body to get stronger.

The coaches to the spartan athletes fed the athletes watercress daily. The reason they found watercress decreased recovery time and increased indurance. It was a heavy peice of circular bread, slathered on a heavy butter topped with yogurt and a piles of watercress. I also find that when i juice a few ounces into 6 granny apples my leg endurance is directly effected while riding my bike. So i started reading about it. Then i gave my finding to some male coworkers to verify when being intimate with thier wives. The next day they aproached me and were very exited and said wow unbeleivable. They were speaking anout the intamacy. So it wasnt just me, its having a real effect on others also.

Watercress is also called Chandrashoor (or halim) and is used extensively in Ayurveda. You can grow your own from seed. Look for Halim seeds or chandrashoor seeds. Also known as Asario seeds. Any grocery store should carry those. There are several youtube videos that show how to grow it. They can be eaten as sprouts or microgreens too.

If exercising uses up all of the anti-oxidants in your body, and begin to lack anti-oxidants, then your brain and internal organs get damaged. I'm not a pro, but I'm pretty sure that's how it works.
@theden31624 жыл бұрын
@@justahealthyperson.1907 well thats not how it works, exercise boosts your internal antioxidant production like gluthation , its called hormesis, antioxidants around exercise blunts the positive effects of exercise
Probably ALOT. I steamed a bag of watercress once, after several minutes what remained was a gloopy small pulpy mess. It literally disintegrates when heated. Eat it raw i say, which is what i am sure we would do in nature anyway.
