Bonnie did a superb job here, beautifully explained, easily assimilated and understood. It’s rare to find communicators of complex subjects as excellent as Bonnie. It helps to have some character background in the lower level blocks of Sigma Delta ADC like the modulator (summing amp, integrating filter, comparator, 1-bit DAC), digital filter and decimator to fully appreciate the finer details as this will open the black box so you can appreciate the structure, behaviour and performance which gives a complete picture of how the delta sigma data converter works.

Thanks for your comment, shazaduh4ever. In addition to this video, Bonnie Baker wrote a four-part technical article series related to this topic that you might find of interest. We’re unable to provide direct links to those articles here, but you can find them on the EDN website if you search for “Delta-sigma ADCs in a nutshell”.

Thank you for such an excellent video! I was diving into tons of textbook pages to find the main idea of this ADC and could not catch the crux of it. Then I spent just an hour on this video and everything is crystal clear!!

very good tour, it quickly brings me back to mix sig class 10 years ago and returns me back to today in 11 mins

Can someone simply explain the high level abstract functional difference between the output of a delta sigma ADC and let's say a 10 bit successive approximation ADC with a similar software averaging routine applied to the white noise? I'm specifically interested in understanding the difference within the context of DC signal measurements. From my beginner's perspective, I get the impression that a delta sigma converter is intended more for the frequency domain?

The higher sample rate of the sigma-delta allows a lower order anti-aliasing filter on the input, thus less ripple. Though I’d assume that filtering still needs to be made up for in the pre-decimation filter, but digital is cheap and fast. In the end, that’s all what it boils down to; replacing precision analog with cheap and fast digital. Dirt cheap audio gear wouldn’t exist if only precision 16/24 bit converters were available.

I know that collection of 2bytes is called a word, but could someone explain what a 1bit word is referred to here? It will be of great help. Thanks.
