They're wonderful when you take a step back and look at them from a less overly-serious perspective. The movies are funny, and I think George wanted them to be funny while still telling their story. You can tell they were made with love, and with fun. That's what makes them loved in hindsight, whereas the sequels are bland and hatted because of the lack of actual love and passion put into the story.

_Revenge of the Sith_ remains my favourite Star Wars film. It's not perfect, but its story is an absolute masterpiece, the action scenes are epic, the comedy hits just right, and the tragedy cuts my heart out. The visual symbolism is superb, and the dialogue - although stilted and unnatural at times - is memorable because it was written to be so. It's why so many scenes in the film became memes; because they stick in your head, and can be used as cultural shorthand to convey ideas. Lucas learned the lessons of his previous two films, for the most part, and absolutely delivered the best film he possibly could. It's not a coincidence that most of the Star Wars spin-offs happen around RotS - either just before, during the Clone Wars, or just after, during the Rise of the Empire. It's because the fundamental narrative which Lucas created, and the characters he gave life to, were compelling and interesting. Plus, the visual aesthetic of RotS was absolutely mind-blowing. Compare that to the sequels, though - no vision, no story, tonal issues, inconsistencies, unlikeable characters, weak narratives... the list of problems goes much further than just "the dialogue was bad" or "one of the characters was goofy and I didn't like that".

Not sure I could replace the OT, but I definitely agree that Revenge of the Sith was the best of the prequels. I remember, even as a kid, being a bit disappointed with Phantom Menace, and being actually a bit bored with Attack of the Clones, but Revenge of the Sith brought all of that to its conclusion, and it delivered. It did everything it needed to do to to complete the tragedy of the prequels and lead into the original trilogy. Although Vadar's nooooooooo did take me out of it a bit. They weren't perfect, but they were actually telling a story.
@rs0764

@@NLuck-eh5cd Well the prequels were never meant to replace or be better than the OT. The prequels are there to complement and enrich the OT and put it into a grander perspective in an overarching narrative. Even if the PT had technical issues as films, those flaws are outweighed by the worldbuilding and added value they bring to the story as a whole, leading to a whole branch of prequel era spin offs like TCW. Though they could have been better, their existence at least had a beneficial impact to the narrative in the end. The same cannot be said for the sequels.

I think one of the hugest differences is that the world of the prequels is interesting. That’s why there’s so much media around that era, you can tell that there’s an entire galaxy out there and the factions are interesting. There are genuine questions like “are the separatists really the bad guys?” Or “have the Jedi fallen from their old grace?” That can be explored. The rich word is why so many “what If” videos are made about it. On the other hand, the sequels feel like there’s nothing going on outside of the main characters story. We don’t know what the new republic is like, we don’t know what the first order is like - their power is so inconsistent throughout the trilogy. It doesn’t leave us with interesting questions or possibilities, I’ve seen barely any “what if” videos about the sequels. And that seems to reflect how the sequel World really isn’t interesting

Thought the romance was kinda clunky. (And I really love Padme/Anakin and am willing to make a lot of excuses for my ships.) But what kelt me watching was the *amazing* world building, the groundbreaking visuals, the chases n stuff and just how CREATIVE everything felt. It felt new and cool and it totally made sense too. And also comparison to the OT, the sequels just leave nothing much to wonder. In the OT, we see the smaller Rebellion take on a much larger Empire and were practically desperate for whatever little win they can pull off. Its a hook for a lot of fans back then seeing s much smaller faction of good taking on an evil faction. Ep 5 and 6 just expands on that smaller story in Ep 4 into a much bigger scale which finally culminates with epic final battle on Endor with a huge Rebellion fleet that was built up from Ep 4. The Sequels? Idk.....New Republic gone....err.....they don't have a fleet I guess? Not even reserves or any fortress planets......hel.....we don't even know what the heck are the Resistance and First Order are fighting for........control of the galaxy? A superweapon? Sure but that was destroyed at the end of Ep 7 so....? Yeah, there's nothing to hook on to the world in the Sequels. The bad characters and just the entire mishandling of directors going back and forth certainly didn't help as well.

At least the prequels made the OT better, it builds up the story in the OT and expands the world. Suddenly Darth Vader and Luke's arcs, the fall of the Empire, and the Jedi rising back up have even more weight because the prequels provided us with the backstory to show us just certain characters fell to the Dark Side and how certain institutions were destroyed. The sequels just retroactively made the OT pointless and meaningless. They rob all of the main OT characters of having achieved anything important or lasting. They fundamentally destroyed major character arcs and also lack focus. Like the prequels helped establish Darth Vader's story and made him even more central to saga, but he sequels completely lacked any focus on him. Anakin is irrelevant to the sequels when he's supposed to be the main character of the entire film series. Not only that, they made the universe feels so small where the prequels made the world feel so big. In the end, even if you didn't like the prequels, they never caused any harm, they never made anything worse. But the sequels destroyed everything that made Star Wars Star Wars and replaced the iconic OT with an inferior versions of itself with inferior characters who only exist at the behest of tearing down legacy characters. That is why I and many others can like and even love the prequels but we will never accept the sequels.

The Prequels improved movie by movie. The sequels got worse and worse. Supplemental material greatly improved the prequels. Nothing has improved the sequels. The prequels didn’t destroy the legacy of a hero character. If anything it tried too hard to humanize a villain. That is forgivable. But nothing in the Prequels diminished the heroism, courage or greatness of Luke, Leia or Han. The Sequels showed that the OT was pointless. Palpatine was still alive. The New Order was basically the Empire. Luke was a bitter useless old man and Han and Leia didn’t live happily ever after. The prequels had too many villains but they were villainous. The sequel villains became feckless and ridiculous. Kylo is a petulant boy fans want to ship with the hero. Hux devolves into a buffoon. Snoke is killed quickly before actually becoming a menace.

Maul and Fett, are ok, but it wouldn't hurt if they had lived more, and in fact they had a lot of potential. Dooku and Grievous on the other hand were very mishandled, Dooku should appear on episode 1, as a Jedi helping the heroes, that way the audience would feel both the betrayal and the menace of this powerful Jedi. The first star wars thing I ever watched was the Clone Wars on Cartoon Network as a kid. Funnily enough I had no idea who Anakin was going to become. In my 10 year old head Anakin and Vader were two different characters cause I hadn't watched the movies. When I found out that anakin turned into vader... my heart broke in a million pieces. I don't know how many people experienced star wars this way, cause older fans were going into the prequels knowing exactly who Anakin was, but that emotional impact hit hard. Years and years later the emotional impact of Season 7 hits just as hard. For me the best thing about the prequels is that they let your imagination run wild. We got hundreds of stories based around Order 66 and it's such an iconic tragedy that has been retold in many many unique ways. The films are the tip of the iceberg inviting you to dive and check out everything underneath the surface, the sequels just don't feel to anything new. These mind-blowing stories with complex, though out plots and spot on characters or these goofy or fluffy stories that aren't that good or accurate, but you still enjoy reading them. But the reality is that it wasn't. And even if it was, it doesn't stop the stupidity on display. 1) You cannot "deconstruct" a character off screen. Luke Skywalker would not act as he did in this movie without a substantial character arc involved. 2) Admiral Holdo was an idiot. The worst portrayal of a military commander I've ever seen on film. She was self righteous, arrogant and portrayed as a hero because of these traits. 3) Poe was absolutely correct in every decision he made in the movie and the movie made out like he was wrong. Any military commander would take the loss of a few bombers to take out the enemies greatest weapon. 4) Finn's character arc was completely undermined by the stupidity of Rose's actions. By all rights, if the story was any good, Rose saving Finn would have resulted in the deaths of all of the resistance fighters in the base. 5) The entire story on the casino planet was a waste of screen time that added nothing to the story. Pointless side quests are a waste of time. Personally I didn't care about the "Holdo manoeuvre", the rule of cool is applicable here. But failing at basic storytelling is not something that should happen in a $200 million movie

They reset Han's character arc, making him the basically tolerable jerk that he was back in ANH, gave Leia force abilities to "make her more powerful and equal to Luke" when she didn't need them to be an amazing role model for young girls, and completely destroyed the optimistic "I can save him" Luke into a "Nah, my nephew is a lost cause, man" pessimist jerk. I'm someone who has always unironically loved the prequels (In fact Episode I in my favourite, fight me). Yeah they have clunky dialogue, but that just adds too the charm (and eminent memeablity). And outside the dialogue, they are very solid movies as a whole. Dosney Star Wars however is outright disrespectful to the canon. There isn't a single movie they made (well other than, debatably, Rogue One) that didn't horrifically retcon, undo and just make a mockery of the movies that came before it The Farce Awakens just up and destroyed the victory of the Original Trilogy, undid Han's character growth, destroyed Han and Leia's relationship, destroyed the New Republic and made Luke run away. The Lost Jedi destroys every one of JJ Abram's mystery boxes, it also made Finn, Poe, Hux and Snoke into jokes, completely destroyed Luke's character, destroyed just about the entire "Resistance", retconned the hell out of how space battles work, retconned how the force works and undermined all previous battles with _hyperspace ramming._ Solo made it so that Han went through THE EXACT SAME CHARACTER ARC THREE DIFFERENT TIMES. Also retconning the Millennium Falcon into having the mind of Lando's toaster girlfriend is something NOBODY asked for. The Rise of Palpatine retconned just about everything that Rian Johnson did, it also completely undermined Anakin's sacrifice in Episode VI by making Sidious just alive after exploding twice.

To put it simply, it felt like a good classic EU type of story. I dislike Rogue One, but it’s still at least a good movie. The ST sucks

TPM is the most underrated movie in the whole series, imo. It showed a lot of ANH's themes off better than ANH did; compare Obi-Wan and Luke's relationship to Qui-Gon and Anakin's. The decision to show Vader as an idealistic, altruistic, and above all innocent child gives us a much broader perspective on who Anakin was, and why he was worth saving. And seeing how talented Anakin was makes his downfall that much more tragic, because we knew his gifts would be wasted. Also, Qui-Gon is GOATed. Easily top 5 Jedi in all of Star Wars media.

TPM shows why Anakin is so important, his strong attachment to his mom, why Obi-Wan wasn't right teacher to him, why he hates Tatooine, Jedi rules, Palpatine becoming chancellor, world building, etc...And of course, podracing and Darth Maul. AOTC actually tells a great story (Palpatine's rise to power by manipulation Republic and Separatists, Anakin's progression of falling to the Dark Side, start of the Clone Wars), develops characters, shows us real war, new planets, species, ships, droids, world, and has strong connection with 1 and 3. What does ROTS show us? The largest battle in the Clone Wars, deaths of Dooku and Grievous, Kashyyk battle, Anakin's conflict with Jedi and himself, his weakness (save who he loves), which perfectly works with saving Luke, Palpatine's manipulation and rise to power, Order 66, 2 amasing final battles and the creation of Darth Vader and Empire, birth of Luke and Leia, new hope. It is meaning for the whole Galaxy and is the most emotional. TFA is a copypaste of ANH without any logic, good characters, with stupid jokes, infinite coincidences, which retconned whole OT: Empire hasn't fallen, Han and Leia are not together, Luke left everyone like a coward, etc... TLJ is not a movie, it's middle-finger to all star wars fans. Stupid jokes in each serious moment, ruining old characters, copy of OT, not answering any questions, breaking the lore, pointless sequences. TROS: Somehow Palpatine has returned, lol. I disagree, honestly I think that TFA is actually fun to watch, despite being ANH, they actually work well to set up good stories later on (which they failed at). Finn is a GREAT Character in TFA, and it could've been great until they messed it up in TROS and TLJ. TLJ..is a movie. The Jokes were actually well timed and not overused, they didn't ruin Luke either. I actually like Luke's usage in TLJ. It works, the way crait's battle ends with him is amazing, its what a Jedi should be. Of course, it gets kind of..yeah messed up, but it wasn't this end all be all people think it was. TROS is horrible. I won't deny any of that. TPM is boring, flat, and hard to watch. I can't stand it at all. I kind of understand whats happening, but its characters and dialogue suck. AOTC is only a bit better than TPM, it suffers from the same problems but at least is interesting and funny enough to keep me engaged. ROTS is fun to watch, it suffers from the issues in AOTC and TPM, but it works better. The characters feel better and the dialogue is massively improved and, the jokes are kind of funny. Still has its issues, such as Kashyyk being almost completely pointless. It only matters in Order 66. Another major one is how it feels separate from AOTC, it is too much of a time gap without anything inbetween for the average viewer. It is a sudden shift that feels off. It focuses too much on setting up the OT that it suffers as a result, yoda is completely mishandled and the characters are dumb as rocks.. the ST could've been good if it kept with the story line, and the PT is just flat and boring until halfway through AOTC and the entirety of ROTS. Even then, its only a little better.

And it made Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader not only to my favorite Star Wars character but also one of my favorite characters in all of fiction, together with Thanos. And even with their flaws, I can still see what George wanted to tell with it: Like many complain about the "Are you an angel?" line. What do you expect from a 10 year old boy who has seen a beautiful girl for the first time? Or Anakins weird flirting. He was firting for the first time, what do you expect? Or that Padme was much older than Anakin in Ep. 1. They were only 5 years apart, Han and Leia were 10 years apart. I also never understood why people complain about Anakin being whinny in Episode 2. Luke and Ahsoka also started out whinny, to set the stage for something called character development . I never understood how people could overlook that. And I personally think Hayden did a very good playing a young disolusioned men who was told his entire life to surpress his emotions (Star Wars Theory did a good video about this topic). TROS was as much Dark Empire as it was ROTJ. A shitty, watered down Dark Empire, but Dark Empire nonetheless. Luke's standoff with Kylo in TLJ was drawing heavily from something similar but much cooler that Luke did to his evil nephew in Legends. The ST was the OT mixed with cherry picked elements of Legends material.

I have a friend who watched all 6 SW movies recently for the first time. She's 23. The thing is, she found both prequels and originals really enjoyable. Of course, she admits flaws of both trilogies, like some scenes were unnecessarily long, some moments are cringy or not always have good acting and so on, but she still likes both trilogies equally - mostly, for an interesting story told by them. As for sequels, she's quite afraid to even watch it since she's already heard about such "brilliant" decisions like Rey Palpatine, Palpatine's resurrection, Luke's attempt to kill nephew and other stupid plot-twists which simply don't make any sense. And I completely understand her, ngl.

Normally I'm really not a fan of the "checkboxes" argument, buuuut in this case I think it really is part of the problem. It's not like there wasn't a diverse cast in the original and prequel trilogie, but it feels like they did it without trying so hard. Now they had to make a strong female lead, so strong in fact that she didn't even really have to try to overcome most problems. Then there was the hint of a romance, which they didn't even go through with but just faded out halfway?? Female leads are great, but why not take Lucas' original idea and continue after the original trilogie with Leia? There was so much material to make great movies out of, but Disney just had to wipe it all just to make some movies that didn't even have a plan.

Look no further than Rogue One to see a successful strong and confident woman and a diverse cast. The same boxes were checked, but they didn't make it the focus of the story. Where Rey felt like a lvl 60 skyrim character from the start, Luke, Anakin and even Jyn or Ashoka had to grow as characters to become a better version of themselves. Rey was already a jedi before meeting Luke. It felt really dishonest in my opinion, because you know nothing bad can happen to a woman in these movies, they are always honorable, compared to the evil men (like in Star Wars 8 with Poe and the pink hair woman). The same happened with Game of Thrones. Suddenly, when they ran out of books, every female character became powerful and unstoppable. Its just annoying that every woman has to be honorable and strong. It damages the complexity of a story heavily.

There was a reason he was living in the edge of the galaxy in exlie, after all. Vader? Well, I can't say I ended up liking his story. I never disliked the prequels. I loved Jar Jar as a character, I loved the memes, the banter between the jedi, that the stakes felt real, heck, I even loved the politics of the prequels because it was world building. You saw a bustling society of tons of people all living their lives and being affected by war. The "bad dialogue" was there sure, but it was cut short in order to fit into a movie format. Yoda's words of wisdom definitely has more weight in clone wars, but in the movie they didn't have time for a scene where a padawan is led into a room full of younglings by Yoda in order to teach them a lesson. Maybe that just goes to show that Star Wars works better in my opinion as a series. There is so much that can be fleshed out, but movies don't have the luxury of space.

One reason I think the sequels struggled (and even the EU with how it struggled to move past hardcore fans) is that the OT is the end of Star Wars. There's your happy ending. While other stories might happen in the same Universe, they either won't be as grandiose in scale, or they'll predate the events of the ending. When all prophecies are fulfilled, all battles are won, the narrative need not carry on.

My idea as to why Prequels were criticized - different story telling: Heroes fall (not journey) and world building (which not everyone can get behind which is understandable). - George had to many ideas - 30+ year time gap between the OT and PT ...things will get lost or forgotten. Now the PT had issues but they still had consistency, world building and NEW IDEAS..not mcguffin chasing and movie copy paste. There are similarities with the OT and PT but they parallel each other. Ep3 and Ep6 Dooku vs Anakin -- Luke vs Vader Dooku dies = anakin fails -- Vader is spared = Luke passes Sequel Trilogy offers no depth, gives us tropes and "subversive ideas" but with little to no pay off. Also story is extremely inconsistent and has NO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. Anyway, thanks for the video analysis!

probably the biggest criticism was the awkward scriptwriting and pacing. since the beginning, george thought of good stories, but was not that good at making them a reality. the difference is that the OT scripts went though lots of revisions, while the PT scripts went largely unchecked. in a way, the rough draft made its way to the production

I go back to old reviews of the star wars prequels and just realize how many points are either wrong, stupid or equally apply to the original series “Anakin is an annoying brat” That’s the entire point of his character arc he spends his whole life being called the chosen one and told how great he is, this leads to him having a sense of entitlement that ultimately sets him up for failure and leads him to the dark side. Say what you want about how dearth Vader’s supposed to be a bad as, someone doesn’t become a cyborg space wizard dictator who chokes out his subordinates at slightest disagreement because they’re a well adjusted person. “Jar jar is annoying character for kids” What do you think the Ewoks were? Hell the Ewoks literally had their own animated kids show. “Space politics are too complex for a child to care about.” The original trilogy didn’t have space politics to the same extent but they did have space philosophy with a lot of really subtle ideas that I certainly didn’t fully grasp as a kid. “The characters aren’t memorable, you can’t describe the characters without naming their title” Luke sky walker feels entitled to great power he’s the type of guy who’s been told “you’re the best” his whole life. While he’s highly competent He can’t really deal with failure or the idea that something may be out of his control entirely. Quigon Jin is similar to obi wan In a lot of ways, very wise and patient but kinda a smart ass. It’s clear that obi wan try’s to emulate how his master behaved Count Dooku is peak “villain” big master plans and a self satisfied ego. I could go on but i think I’ve made my point. The only point I think really stands against the prequels is the poor acting and dialogue but from a pure story and entertainment standpoint they hold up well imo

When you read some of the criticism against the prequels from hardcore OT fans you realize a lot of them didnt really understant the originals to begin with. Vader was never supposed to be badass. Scary? Yes, but he was always meant to be pathetic. How do you see someone who can hardly breathe, is nothing more than an attack dog for the Emperor, is in constant pain and go like "damn, thats one cold badass mf"? One criticism in particular that has always bugged me is that you can not identify the main character of the TPM. How can you be a fan of A new hope and not immediately identify its Queen Amidala just like Leia was? You have the same composition with Obi-wan and Qui-gon replacing r2 and c3po as POV characthers. In the same note, people say qui gon is pointless and instead of the duo you could just have obi wan. I can say the same about r2 and c3po...

Just look at Maul vs Qui-Gonn and Obi-Wan, the *Duel of Fates* The emotional buildup, the fight, the fear, the clashing of lightsabers in the lonely halls of Naboo's generator facility. An absolutely flawless set of scenes that literally _sing_ to you the plot through music and amazing choreography. As for Anakin vs Obi-Wan, no words can describe this fight. This sequence will be forever the most epic fight in literature/tv/anime/cinema for me. It’s a forever classic. They don’t do things like that anymore. And _Battle of The Heroes_ what a soundtrack to support that amazing fight in literal pits of hell. The swings between former friends, the jumps on metal platforms, the air-flips. I can talk and analyse this battle forever. It is truly legendary and ballsy. The fall of an angel which is Anakin Skywalker. Sequels have some _swoosh swoosh_ "fights" and weak plot. "They fly now?" Yeah Poe, they fly now… As well as in Clone Wars and OT.

Liked episode 3 as it's a great action movie - and the prequels, if seen as as obi-wan's story, weren't that bad. Didn't even bother to watch the sequels after episode 7. Just couldn't bear the main characters. Regarding your comment about the pronunciations: Your english is perfectly fine. I'm not a native speaker myself, but could get every word you said. @@Cos_Why_Not Have you tried watching the original six in the Machette order? It goes, episode 4, 5 then 1, 2, 3 and 6. It's the most satisfying order to watch, and the entire story just molds together perfectly. That's the problem with the Sequels, they just don't add anything, it doesn't feel like they belong in the story. The original six are a story about a father and his son, the last three are about some girl who likes to take people's things.

I will always say that part of the reason the prequels are viewed more positively now is because those of us who were kids at the time are old enough to have voices that reach far and wide, especially with the internet. It makes me so happy to know that so many people like me loved these films at the time and still fight for them. George will always be the greatest for me because he created something that was his own, stood by it, changed it if he felt necessary etc.

I kinda had faith in J.J. back when TFA was first announced, but to say he and Rian Johnson (and the people at Mouse Inc.) dropped the ball would be an understatement. as for George Lucas, watching THX1138 and American Graffiti made me appreciate him more as a director. there's more vision and balls in a single frame of either of those films than in the entirety of the sequel trilogy. it's not like he lost it when he made the prequels. mistakes were made, but you can tell that something grand is going on, and honestly all the goofy stuff is part of the experience; that's what makes it memorable.

I also think nostalgia plays a big role in the now positive view of the prequels. Many of the fans are not fans that watched the originals when they came out and then saw the prequels years later but younger fans that grew up with the prequels. When my dad watched the star wars movies with me, we did it chronologically and I liked the prequels more. Why? Because I was an 8 year old kid that liked the epic lightsaber fights, droid smashing, big space battles and the humor more than the "calmer" nature of the original trilogy. Sure at some point I realized that the prequels aren't that good movies but it didn't really matter because the childhood memories of listening to the star wars audiobooks so often that I could literally speak along or pretending to be jedi with friends and fighting imaginary droid armees. You don't really see the big flaws as an elementary school student. My generation also really really loves memes and turns out literally every line from the prequel trilogy can be turned into a meme. The memes are funny and everytime I see one I also feel a little bit of nostalgia and not so bad for liking the prequels.

The prequels had like you say a clear vision on the story they wanted to tell in 3 coherent parts it was the rise and fall of Anakin into Darf Vader and that was a common plot thread throughout all the films and you could see early warning signs in Anakin as well as his character progression. The sequels were all over the place and had no idea what story they were trying to tell and I genuinely didn't care about any of the new characters they introduced they were like you said added to tick boxes on the diversity list and didn't bother to develope them properly in a way that would make you care the same way fans do when they watch the first 6 films about Anakin and Luke. It's a shame as they had a blank slate when they stupidly wiped out all of legends so could have gone anywhere with the characters and we got this crap. It's why I'd rather just stop at the 6th film and why I'm not surprised that the new characters aren't getting spin-off's cause nobody cared about them. Should have let George Lucas write the story and then have writers help with the dialogue as would have been much better sequels

One major difference between the prequels and the sequels is that the prequels didn't have the media crying wolf and gaslighting the audience every step of the way. Like, imagine if Ahsoka premiered in this generation rather than 2008. The media would all be like "Anakin's STRONG INDEPENDENT new apprentice proves that women can be Jedi, too!" "Ahsoka proves she don't need no man to teach her the Force!" "Only toxic man-babies are stupid enough to dislike Ahsoka!" "A vocal minority is trying to tarnish the legacy of this PERFECT new icon for girls!"

When I rewatched the fourth Star Wars film/First prequel, The Phantom Menace earlier this year, I was pleasantly surprised by how well it holds up! I mean, I can understand why it gets so much flack (it is a much different film than its predecessors), but at the same time, it was fun, it told an intriguing story, had the best sound design and music of ANY Star Wars movie before and after, but more so because it lived up its title of Episode I: It was the entire backbone of the Star Wars mythology, and the answers it provides to mysteries raised by the first three films are actually satisfactory and illuminating. And THAT'S how you follow up a tough act to follow: You answer questions raised by your prior work in a unique way and make sure that the answers are good.

The prequels not only told us a story but also made a lot more sense when you watch them together and combine them with the originals in the long run. The sequels had stories that were flat out confusing, outrageous, and terrible. Literally every single sequel movie is Disney's attempt to recreate and Disnefy the originals. The Prequels also had characters that served a purpose in story even if they weren't likeable. For example, Jar Jar, despite being the most disliked character of the prequels, served as the reason why Palpatine gained power and Naboo was able to make an alliance that allowed them to win that battle. Anakin, Dooku, Yoda, and Padme, show how blind the republic was to the true threat of the Empire as well as how it affected them when the hammer finally fell. Also, while the prequels felt rushed as there were major time skips between movies, these time skips could be and were fixed by the Clone Wars TV show. Disney's new characters served no purpose in the plot and are most widely disliked because of it. The only two or three star wars characters made by Disney that are somewhat likeable are Poe Dameron and Finn because both of them were relatable and underwent a character development in all three movies despite their lack of purpose. Finn learned to be brave, stick up for himself and willing to ace his past while Poe learned humility, leadership, and trust. BB-8 is probably the only other character but since he's a droid, he doesn't exactly count cuz you can't change a droid's persona. The Sequels did not suffer any major time skips and you can tell that Disney was just trying their best to pack it all in one go. Their lack of those time skips also make it so there is no easy way to fix their mistakes which go beyond just poor writing.

This is possibly the most well thought-out take on these films that I have seen to date. I remember seeing Episode II in the theater. My friends and I had to wait for hours, so we could get good seats. I remember going "WTF?!" again and again during the ridiculous dialogue. I remarked at the time on how I had participated in middle school plays that were better written. Yet, looking back now, all that nonsense aside, those films were silly fun. Episodes VIII and IX, on the other hand, evoke no emotion other than anger in me. I cannot see how something would be able to change that view over time.

I particularly like how you pointed out that te prequels didn’t inherently have a bad story-just a bad adaptation and directing choices, and George Lucas believed in that, so when they redid it in Clone Wars, they doubled down on what they believed in and it really paid off. It’s something corporations could never do.

This is a clear cut case of vision vs regurgitation. I mean, we all already knew this. I’m sure many can agree that they felt at least an inkling of this when viewing the Sequels. For me I personally I felt it when I watched TLJ in theaters. The entire time there was just something… missing. It took me until a few months after that viewing when the backlash was leveling out that I realized what it was. The Sequels have no soul. I don’t feel anything from them except maybe some surface level emotions. Contrast that with literally any of the other movies there’s this feeling in my chest and this buzz in my head that just says to me that this is Star Wars. I can reciprocate and identify the passion that went into making those movies because it just feels… real. And that’s forever going to be the telltale sign for me

Oof, your line about the Sequels have to prove themselves better than anything which had been decanonised summed it up beautifully. When Disney announced the trilogy, I remember EVERYONE wanted Thrawn. Like, to the level of the seagulls from Finding Nemo chanting "Mine?" only we were saying "Thrawn?" I even overheard a conversation between Timothy Zahn, the creator, telling a fan about how if Disney had called him, he would have driven to the studio in six hours instead of the usual eight. So, yes! Thank you wrapping up this mess into such a neat package.
