I Made a Gary Oak ROM Hack of Pokémon Fire Red. And it was a Hardcore Nuzlocke!
Gary Oak was the OG rival in Pokémon. And lets be honest here: he was better than Ash for quite a while. But for some reason, people like Ash more. So lets play a hardcore Nuzlocke of Pokemon Fire Red as Gary. I bet he could have been the Kanto Champion!

Yeah, though it wasn’t really shown in the anime, there are more than 8 gyms to chose from. You might remember the episode with the scyther and electabuzz guy fighting each other. They were the leaders of two gyms attempting to get officially recognized by the indigo league. So we don’t actually know how many badges are possible

I'll always have respect for Gary. As a kid 'beating' the elite 4 not healing; blissfully unaware that: GARY MF OAK already beat me to it! And the real championship battle just began, taught me so much. I always liked Gary, he had a Jolteon for me (I always beat him during the story) but he got his revenge (at first). I grinded, bought revives, and re-tried until I finally beat him.

I did actually think about including them, but I decided that unless we say Gary use them in battle, I wasn't going to use them. He already has a stacked team I didn't need any more. But in the johto region, I may include them, we'll see.

I don't like how the Episodes are out of order. Ash being at Lavender Town should have had 5 Pokemon as that was before he caught Primeape. Umbreon against Sabrina is a cheat because Eevee was still Eevee when Ash returned from the Orange Islands it would have made more sense for him to use Scyther. The 2 Giovanni Battles could have been stand ins for the Gym Leaders we don't know of. Champion battle Ash could have used Kingler & Muk as he used those during the tournament. If you go with Orange League Team you could have used Tauros as well as Ash uses it at Pumelo Island.

Great channel and video. I have a serious question. How did you learn how to hack Pokemon games? I just got back into Pokemon after 20 years, and I want to learn how to do the same types of things (change Pokemon you encounter, change text, change characters, change colors, change stats, etc.). I'm primarily interested in the original games that were available on Gameboy. Any tips on how to learn and what to purchase? I have a Gameboy Color, Pokemon Blue, and a MacBook Pro currently.

These kinds of hacks are done on Roms not cartridges. I dont know exactly how for pokemon but I know for fire emblem they have an app called fe builder.

Basically, you can get to a point where all the code can be opend with a code editor, like visual studios, and you can change it there. I'd like to point out that "earning" a badge is subjective. Yes Ash earned some badges by doing things other than combat because that's not the only way to grow as a person. When Misty's sisters wanted to just give Ash the badge, he flat out refused it. Ash also refused to force Pikachu to evolve to beat Lt. Serge's Raichu and let Pikachu choose. This is completely fair because the Anime isn't the Video Game. Ash actually did stuff to get those badges, not just defeat people in combat.

Maybe, it just is a problem that is pretty unique to kanto. I mean the whole point of earning badges is to be able to enter the conference and battle against other trainers. In kanto though, ash got half of his badges through either a lame “victory”, like using sprinklers on onix, or being given the badge for saving pokemon from a fire or making someone laugh. It gets so bad that in one of the Blaine episodes, ash basically expects a badge after helping Blaine even without a battle. So I get where your coming from, but I still think it’s lame how many badges were given to ash without winning a battle

Something I have been contemplating is a Firered hack that changes everything back to the Gen 1 encounters and movesets. I wonder how it would all play with the access to abilities, and improved AI. And yes, Gary like Blue is a better Trainer. Remember that you beat Blue AFTER he already fought through the E4 and likely the previous champion. Also also, I am dissappointed you didn't follow tradition and call your rival "Ass Ketchum"

I did eventually get a car, but at that point I was done with sprite editing, so I just called a truck good enough. The cheerleaders would have been funny though
