NV4500 Rebuild and Conversion from RWD to 4x4 - Part 1

One thing to keep in mind, the shaft will grow when it warms up. You're pulling it apart cold, so maybe while it was in operation, it would warm up and the tolerances weren't too loose. Probably best to replace it though.

What size pipe did you use to press on those parts?

In this video where I use the press at the end, it was actually a big socket. Just whatever was big enough for the shaft to not hit or bottom out.

I have a 93 Silverado 4x4 with a beefed up sbc 350 5.7L I guess my question is do you know what the best clutch kit i should put in with my NV4500? i do a lot of long hauls with trailers as well. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

Sorry im seeing this so late! Typically when selecting a clutch you want to not only take into consideration what your primary use is, but the torque your engine will output. I've had really great luck with southbend clutches and if memory serves they recommend organic or organic/composite for towing. If you are still in the market I'd look them up. They know their stuff and will get you exactly what you need.

Great video! I like all of the small details you add in. Where can I find the rebuild kit you used? My 99 Dodge 3500 NV4500 locked up while on the interstate and pulling a trailer with a '79 F-250 on it. My input shaft was destroyed in the process along with the big gear on the counter shaft (I don't remember what that gear was called). I'm looking for a complete kit. Or, a good site to buy everything I need. I'm also very interested in the Torque Kings manual you mention in the 2nd video. Thanks again for the superb quality of your videos!

Sorry for the late reply. I did have a master parts kit for most of the internals but bearings and the bigger input shaft etc didn’t come in one kit. I’ll have to do some digging and put all that information together. Sorry to hear about your input shaft, mine was missing a tooth as well.

@@getheated Also, sorry for my late reply. I appreciate you getting back with me. I found everything I needed at TorqueKing. Unfortunately, some of the parts are on back order. I'm looking forward to rebuilding my transmission. It will be my first go at a manual. In the mean time I am cleaning parts and replacing the clutch, rear main seal and pilot bearing. I'll let you know how it all goes. Thanks again!

I believe I used a combo between TorqueKing, Transpart World and one other place depending on who was cheapest or who had the parts in stock. Sorry I never got the list for you. Life has been CRAZY

Did you update your main shaft size to 1’3/8inch are did you keep Your factory size ?

I went with the upgraded input shaft. My main input gear had a tooth out of it so I figured if I was going to replace it, why not upgrade for the same price? Also went with the 3rd gen clutch kit to fit the upgraded shaft.

Could you possibly tell me everything I would need to complete this job? I assume just an output shaft and 4x4 tail housing?

Yes the only real difference between the rwd and the 4x4 is the output shaft and tail housing. While you are in there inspect it real close for worn or damaged parts/bearings/gears. Now will be the best time to service it. My synchros were all hosed and the 2nd gear one had its teeth mostly sawed off. Those, one gear and pretty much all the bearings and its good for another 200k to 300k miles.

Can you tell me if after a certain year that the 2wd tailhousings were the same for dodge and gm?

@Lifeline13216 ​​⁠to my knowledge the tail housing share the same bolt pattern but GM had a different output shaft and yoke. I believe GM had a harmonic balancer on the yoke. Is there a certain type of hybrid you are wanting to build?

I'm looking for a dodge diesel nv4500 2wd tailhousing. I can drive 5 hours to get one or pay an out of this world price for one lol but I think I may of found one. Thank you for responding back. The one I sent the question about I'm thinking is for a gasser it has the indention at the yoke end. Or it's gm idk.

@Lifeline13216 no problem at all! I will also offer something else to look out for. The 2001+ model tail housings often did NOT have a hole for the speedometer gear/sensor as they started using a different method of monitoring speed. Everything else matches up though.

hellow a have a question, i rebuild my 1998 dodge cummins nv4500 and put it in revers let roll pressed the clutch and the transmission locks and the wheels lock too,,,, put it in first gear and samothing let it roll pressed clutch and wheel lock, wat may bebn thanks

Hmm well reverse and 1st don’t share much in common but it’s possible you might have the synchros in backwards? I’ve not heard of that specific issue so I’m not 100% sure.

Thank you very much! I thought I was going to be clever and just order a basic rebuild kit then add on any extras I needed. Turned out it would have been cheaper to go with the $1500 master rebuild kit in the long run because it was just SO beat to hell. I used Allstate Gear for most of my needs and would highly recommend them. Way better pricing vs Quad 4×4/Torque King but still trusted quality parts over the who knows what you might get off Amazon/eBay.

So there is a $1,500.00 master kit!? I only could fine one for max around $500.00 for rebuild kit with shaft? What kit is it?

@@cdpperformance2613 you are right I've been digging around for a 2wd master kit and can't find one yet. All the "best" kits are for 4×4. I used a main kit from Transparts wharehouse and then got the rest of the items I needed from a combination of Transparts wharehouse, Allstategear and Torque King. I'll do more digging for you though.
