It’s entirely possible that their relationship with suppliers and TSMC predicted an opening in production and part availability that allowed them to reissue this card. Given how it’s the most popular SKU (Turing) that targeted an affordable price, it’s a no brainer that Nvidia can sell to make extra bank during the shortage. Aside from scalpers, I am concerned we will see more movement to crypto goons than gamers.

@PropaneWP
@PropaneWP 2 жыл бұрын
@qtsssim Here's the thing. In most cases, crypto miners ARE the scalpers. And a lot of the cards sold by scalpers have actually been used for mining. There's a whole side business going on where people are selling GPU packaging material to miners/scalpers, just to put things in perspective.
@TechyBen
@TechyBen 2 жыл бұрын
@@evenbetterthantherealthing92 I'm guessing they had already committed to the order of GDDR6 and with 3000 series production slower than the 2060 possibly, they can just swap out production lines with them. Going to 8gb might mess up order quantities or PCB setups and fabs which will delay or need more costs to change.

I guess none of the tech tubers remember their own reviews of the 2060 from back when it first came out. They all fail to mention that the 2060 is not beefy enough to bother turning on raytracing most of the time, and therefore the RT cores are basically useless. Nvidia chose the wrong card to relaunch to try to fix the shortage. They would have been better off re-fabbing the GTX 1650 Super... it has a die size about half.... they could have pumped out twice as many on each silicon wafer... Add a little extra memory and call it the 1650 Ti. Flood the market with those and bring budget card scalper prices back down.

Yeah but at launch, DLSS wasn't a thing. It is now. 2060 is perfectly fine 1080p RT in any mainstream title. You have to remember, anything more than RT reflections is a PC only thing. The next gen consoles cannot handle more than that. So the vast majority of games people are playing the 2060 at 1080p+ DLSS works perfectly fine on.

Crypto miners: “Sweet, thanks!” If Nvidia actually cared a 1070 4GB would’ve been a baller move. Pascal is ancient at this point but it would’ve been a “budget” card that could’ve alleviated the competition between gamers and miners, and still have been capable of solid 1080p.

I got no problem with Nvidia trying to ease supply shortages by re-releasing older cards that miners might not want. But these cards will all be bought up and scalped the moment any of them reach the retail channel. So if they have to bring it back, they gotta do it for a good price. I think the only reason why Nvidia are doing this is to try and get cards to OEM system builders so they can remain in business. Hence why nobody knows the retail price of the card, because there isnt one as its for OEM system builders. Its a deal between Nvidia and OEM builders so the average joe doesnt need to know because they wont be able to get them as individual cards. According to Jon Peddie. AIB shipments increased by 25% in the last year. In that case why is there still a supply issue and retail prices being way above MSRP???

Curiously this one also has the computational throughput of the 2060 Super which is much higher than base 2060 and cutting it dangerously close to the 2070. But it has a slow memory bus of the 2060. It shouldn't be too hard to maximise locality and basically not even choke the VRAM bus so hard when doing ML. Honestly this whole vid is kinda garbage. Honestly it seems like one of two things are in play here: A) nVidia grabbed 10/12nm capacity that had been abandoned by a company who canceled their orders or B) nVidia stockpiled GPU parts for OEM's (eg for Dell, HP and Lenovo) that ultimately didn't get used due to other part shortages, or OEM's opting to use iGPU's alone. My money is on A. Which means the reason for the 12GB, is probably because this is the only memory configuration possible on that chip, and smaller GDDR6 models aren't available. Keep in mind that the Super has a wider memory bus, and would need two more chips. Which makes me wonder if they're not going to release desktop 3050's. Which they probably shouldn't waste fab space on it when the high end 3080/80Ti/90 are needed for high end systems.
@darthwiizius
@darthwiizius 2 жыл бұрын
The extra memory chip configuration would lead to a different power regulation configuration and the 2060S is only 5% slower than a 3060 so going for a 6 chip design makes sense, after all Nvidia probably also don't want to highlight how pathetic an "upgrade" the 3060 was over the Turin cards. I'm just pleased I picked the last 2060S in my town last year just before things went nuts, and yes I'd rather have 8GB with the high band width than 12 with the memory bottleneck, I play most stuff at 60FPS and 1080P so bandwidth is king to me.
@KillahMate
@KillahMate 2 жыл бұрын
Super has a wider memory bus and could use two _fewer_ chips - I see no reason why a 2060S, which was and is a 1440p GPU, shouldn't be using 8GB of VRAM. That's the _perfect_ amount for the performance class and would in fact improve performance due to the wider bus.
@darthwiizius
@darthwiizius 2 жыл бұрын
@@KillahMate It does, the 2060S is only 2% slower than a 2070. Just look how much quicker the 3060ti with it's 8GB 8 chip layout is compared to the 3060 for an example. Core counts don't scale linearly but bandwidth does as it directly affects the throughput to those cores.

An RTX 2060 would be an upgrade for a lot of people. Steam's hardware stats shows us that a lot of cards in the top 10 or 20 are worse than an RTX 2060. Even the GTX 960 or GTX 750 TI has a ~1% market share. Sure, a lot of people are still trying to get one of the higher end cards, but there are countries where those can easily cost 2-3 months of paychecks with the current prices.

Most of the top 20 is either way older, but too close to be worth if you've already waited this long or even better performance like 1080, or just straight up better and newer or literally the 2060. Only really the 1050 ti, 1650 ti, and iGPU would be worthwhile. The Rx 580 in my area sells for same price as 6600 on FB, so that's a better upgrade path. Or like 100 more to get the 6600 xt.

@Linus Tech Tips they could be trying to use GDDR6 due to the high value of that memory in sat in stock, if demand of that chip has been low but their stock is high. They will want high turnover / to reduce stock perhaps if they ended up with considerably more than they expected. This could be the case even if the card can not utilise 12GB of memory effectively - it could also be that 8GB of GDDR5 of whatever is actually more expensive at the minute due to reasons you alluded to - the Fab Plant capacity.

@@jarrod7465 that's true, but when you're buying for extreme budget, theres also long-term usability to think about. I'd estimate that a solid majority of the actual PC building space is aiming for an ol'-reliable gpu that they can snag without breaking hte bank right now, to skate through for a few years til the market normalizes.

3:42 I don't think so Linus, the chip shortage being mainly responsible is simply not enough to justify the price inflation in GPUs today. You can buy an RTX 3070 laptop for the same price as a 3070 alone (essentially identical silicon, with much more stuff in a laptop). This can either mean two things: either the distributors/board-partners are sitting on GPUs at the old massively inflated prices, or they're simply being bought by miners at similar prices from the distributors.

Problem is, a card useful for professions are ALSO economic for mining operation. At least Quadro series had expensive price at first and do not have great cooling structure which is why they weren't instantly hooked up by miners. In fact, professionals who works for big companies can still use Quadro or Ampere series. Problem is not so big professionals such as university lab or some PhD guy/gal's personal projects which sometimes turns out to be a humanity savior.

News seems to be hinting at this being a paper launch of a *mining* card that's being sold in back channels only. :/ (I'd assume you are correct that this memory is from the 3060 production, but that's probably why they are doing it, they are possibly behind in 3060 throughput, so have 12gb sets of VDDR6 waiting around with no 3060s to go on, so getting some 2060s out the factories will get the stock of memory down, and they can just wait for the 3060 chips to come in, and by then should have more VDDR for it.)

Maybe put jackery, and other big battery packs (i have one from anker, who also makes solar panels for it) to the actual test, in winter sun, in canada. You're more likely to need to recharge it with the sun in the winter with longer outages from poor weather. I don't see any of them performing to rated capabilities in these conditions but would love to see how off they were before trying any solar panels myself.

It's travel/camping equipment. It not designed to be used often if your backing up grid power with it your doing it wrong. If you want solar performance get some solid panels, a solar AIO inverter and a decent LiFePo4 battery. The all in one inverters have power fail over and solar / grid charging so it'll run from sun or act like a ups. a Jackery gives you none of that at twice the price and double the hassle.

The core in the 2060 12gb is actually the 2060 Super core. It's still a substantial upgrade for some of the lower Pascal cards and the Maxwell cards, for anyone who still might be using one, which is a lot more people than you might think, based on the Steam hardware survey. I would even go as far as to say that it is competitive against the 1080 and 1080 Ti in certain circumstances, like with Raytracing on, or in games with DLSS support.

it outperforms the 1080 (just barely) at stock clocks. the card uses 3060 components vesides its core chip though. so it has a lot of overclocking headroom and can outpace a 2060 super that way. i run my 2060 12g at 3060 clocks and it makes it perform like a 2070 with extra vram.
