Dr. Adu, thank you! This video has confirmed that using Excel for coding and thematic analysis is less complicated and doesn't require learning NVivo. Using Excel is beneficial for students needing to complete assignments within a two-week timeframe. According to the literature, learning NVivo demands a significant time investment. I attempted to learn it twice, but found it to be overwhelming and the back-and-forth between NVivo, Excel and Word is too much time. I'm utilizing Excel, with a separate tab dedicated to each research question. Each tab contains the research question's title, a column listing participants from P1 to the end, and columns for code, category, and theme. So far, this approach has been effective. I've conducted 21 interviews and this work continues. I think learning NVivo is important but students may not have lots of time.

Ahmed, I appreciate you sharing your expertise with Excel for data analysis. It can indeed be a powerful tool for qualitative studies. When it comes to selecting the best analysis tool, it often boils down to personal preference and the nature of the data at hand. My advice to clients is always: Explore potential tools and go with the one that resonates most with your workflow and comfort level.

Excellent presentation! It was really informative and very well-explained for me as an NVivo beginner. I have a question: When I created the project map and right-clicked on the selected participant, the "Attributed Values" did not pop up on the choices. What could be the reason? I have uploaded the participant demographics from the beginning, though. Do you have any thoughts?
@drphilipadu
@drphilipadu 21 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you found the presentation informative and helpful as an NVivo beginner. 😊 Regarding your question, there are a couple of things you might want to check: Ensure Cases Are Created: First, confirm that you have created a case for each participant file. Without cases, NVivo may not recognize the connection to the demographic data. Link Cases to Demographic Data: Make sure the cases are properly connected to the participants’ demographic data under the case classification. This step ensures that NVivo can associate the demographic attributes with the corresponding cases. This video would help kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHqQnIaJfc-Krq8si=Nc0AiNVqSW7bpY_A

Super helpful videos Philip - thanks for sharing. I have a question. I am working with survey data. Once you have coded the qualitative responses, and then chunked your codes up into themes, I want to be able to see if the themes are different, depending on age, gender, location, ethnicity... Based on your description, the Framework matrix seemed to be able to do this, but I can't seem to make this work. I can see the attribute values, but I want the table to have the attribute values as the rows, rather than the individual cases. Any tips of how to achieve this?
@drphilipadu
@drphilipadu 8 ай бұрын
You're welcome! Framework matrix can only show cases (files) and themes connected to them. To explore the connection between the demographic variables and themes generated, I suggest you go to 'Explore' tab and click on 'Matrix Coding Query'.

Thanks so much Dr. Adu. I want to ask how is the classification and presentation of codes you put in other (when the finding from the data is not related to any of your RQ)? I think this should be a new finding from the study that could be of interest, but how do you go about it? Thank you sir.

You're welcome! Thank you for your questions. After presenting the themes addressing the research questions, you could also share that unique information under 'Other Findings' section. It's not required to share the information that doesn't address your research questions but if it is important to present, I suggest you do so.

Dr. Adu, thank you! How do you make sure the word cloud does not include questions. In your example for creating word cloud, it seems that you have used the entire script, which include questions.
@drphilipadu
@drphilipadu 9 ай бұрын
You're welcome Ahmed! Great question, one option is to use auto code separate questions asked from their response but it will depend on how the questions are formatted and their responses are formatted on Word document. Alternatively, you can run word frequency/cloud based on the relevant information coded instead on focusing on the entire document.

Fab presentation Dr. Adu! I was wondering if there is a way to find out % of quotes dedicated to 1 theme? Currently I can only see the % per participant, but wondering if there was a way to see OVERALL, eg. '22% of all quotes from all participants was dedicated to theme X'

Thank you, Philip Adu, PhD for this brilliant presentation. How can you visualise findings for 92 participants? I feel approaching it from the mapping and bringing out the characteristics of the respondents under the theme may look untidy when you have more than 80 respondents. How best can you present findings with 90+ respondents?
@drphilipadu
@drphilipadu Жыл бұрын
You're right! Creating maps may not be the best option. In case you want to create maps, you can select a few participants to do that. Alternatively, you can create Matrix Query Table, showing specific demographic variables and their connections to the themes.

Thank you so much. I recently bumped into your videos, your presentation style is easy to follow and understand. However, I have one issue using the framework matrix, it's been a bit clumsy because my data was collected using focus groups, so I have multiple speakers, unlike interview transcripts where you have one speaker. My table (rows) came out blank without extracts of what participants said in relation to the code/theme. I need help with this.

Each of the tools has a role to play in our data analysis process. For me, if I have a lot of data, I'll first use ChatGPT to help summarize and generate initial codes and themes and I'll then use the codes/themes to manually code aspects of the data with the help of a qualitative data analysis tool such as NVivo or Dedoose.

Thanks a million for your fruitful presentations. I have a question. In one of your previous videos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHqQnIaJfc-Krq8 (32:50), you said that you can label codes that are not relevant to the research questions but still important as other findings. How can we eventually sorting and presenting them?
@drphilipadu
@drphilipadu 8 ай бұрын
You're welcome! Great question! You could sort them the same way codes under their research questions are sorted. There a lot of flexibility when it comes to dealing with codes/themes under the 'Other findings' container. You can choose not to present them but if you think presenting all or some of them will provide additional supporting information to the main findings, then you could present them.
