*UPDATE* - Price is KEY when considering my recommendation in any video, double that for this one. If you can get the other three drives for $99 at the 250GB size or $179 at the 500GB size, my recommendation would change and those would be worthwhile options. Since this information ages over time, as of mid-August, the WD Black, ADATA SX8000, and Intel 600p are selling at the 250GB size for around $120. The Samsung 960 EVO is selling for $128. For $10 or less, there is no reason to buy anything but the 960 EVO. The price difference is a bit higher at the 500GB size, but even then, I wouldn't touch the other drives for $200. You either buy a SATA 500GB SSD for $150, or you buy 960 EVO for $235, there is little reason to be in the middle on this one. *NOTE* - This advice is not based on just "Benchmarks", the SX8000 has been in my Ryzen 7 machine for months, the 600p has been in my i7-7700K machine for 6+ months, the 960 EVO has been in 2 different machines. I could pick the 960 EVO out of a blind test with the other drives, which is not true of the SATA drives I reviewed a week ago, none of those are far enough apart in performance to make a real difference. I suspect this will all change in a year, just like when the 850 EVO came out and it was noticeably faster than everything else, then finally everyone caught up and now it doesn't matter, in a year or two all the NVMe drives may well have caught up and 2018's review might be "it doesn't matter", but not today!

Tech Deals, I've been watching your videos, I bought the Ryzen 1800x and I'm wondering, does it pay to just get a 1TB Samsung 850 Evo, or a 960 512GB NVMe for Windows w/ 1TB Samsung 850 for all my games; or is it really better to get a 960 EVO 1TB for Windows and games?

Especially the Samsung 950 and 960 Pros should receive some cooling. They have a copper-coated strip under the vendors logo (never peel it off!) functioning merely as a heatsink. If you want to be on the safe side, add a m.2 cooler to the drive and/or direct airflow specifically to the drive. Look at what HP does with the Z Turbo Drive or even Z Turbo Drive Quad Pro, for example. Can't tell for the other drives, as I've never seen them.

Dude this is by far the best, no-nonsense hardware review and benchmark channel on the internet. A very welcome change from the ritalin-fueled, RGB FTW, pimpled kids that make up the bulk of gaming and tech channels on the internet. Thorough, informative and very well delivered. I really hope your channel and patreon blow up bigtime in the foreseeable future. Keep it up!

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of UPDATING YOUR FIRMWARE! No matter which NVME drive you choose, you absolutely must go get updated firmware from the manufacturer as well as any optimization software and methods each one employs. I bought a Samsung 960EVO 1TB drive for my new system and had read all these amazing reviews showing it at 3.2GB/s. When I got mine installed I benched it with 3 drive speed benchmarks...ALL of them were showing between 1.6 to 1.8GB/s Reads and 1.4 to 1.8GB/s writes. I was furious...until I pulled my head out of my ass and updated the firmware, updated the NVME drivers in my operating system from Microsoft's to Samsung's, and downloaded the Samsung Magician Software and ran the drive optimizer. After those three steps it clocked in a 3.0GB/s read and 1.95GB/s write. The reasoning for 3.0GB/s vs the advertised 3.2GB/s is because I have a 10-drive RAID array attached to the same controller and the controller is suffering from "handshaking overhead performance degradation". Makes perfect sense and all is forgiven on that part. Ha ha. So, I recommend STRONGLY to you, take the steps I did and get the absolute MOST you can out of whichever drive you choose.

I just thought of another thing I love about this channel. The audience, or at least those commenting. Unlike other channels, on PC hardware, this one isn't plagued by an overabundance of bitter, immature, vile, and hostile smart-ass know-it-all's that have nothing productive to add or supportive to say,, to anyone. This channel seems to fly under the radar of those miscreants. It's like a safe, peaceful harbor where the good people can gather and talk PC geekery (yup that's a word now) without an argument breaking out and the whole thing turning into a nerdy episode of Maury Povich. BTW, I don't even want to know how that's actually spelled, don't care. This is like the vacation resort within the PC tech community on YT.

Good for you. IMO too many You Tubers are not involved enough in what goes on in the comments section. some don't even read the comments. They only look at Twitter and/or Facebook and are oblivious to what goes on down here. That's also frustrating because I don't use either of those and to discover that all my input goes completely unnoticed by them is disheartening. I do understand that managing a YT channel is very time consuming, presuming you are really making the effort, but having a voice that contributes to future content and possibly getting our questions answered that way or directly down here is a huge benefit of You Tube.

While casually looking up tech-stuff on youtube, I can across your stuff. While being a techi myself and may not be the intended target audience, your stuff is great. Your presentation is clear and very nice and in terms of completeness, you hit the spot, especially on the SLC cache issue. A minor note on that: When writing to the SLC cache, the flash controller immediately kicks in and writes full blocks of data to the flash. So, if you "give it some time" after transferring some large dataset (e.g.: a file) to the 960 EVO, the SLC cache becomes free again. In a typical desktop-user usecase, this might actually be enough to essentially run every write through the SLC cache. Consider yourself: You transfer a video from some external equipment to your system (e.g.: camera) and then head on to load the video into your video-editing software for processing. While doing so, you may perfectly fit in the SLC cache all the time. Nevertheless, I'd also recommend the 960 PROs. Their polaris controllers are actually quite good pieces of sillicon. Given Samsungs history on controllers (completely broken queued trim on the 850 Evo and Pro series), that's astonishing. If you consider extending your review, you might want to look at the Intel 750's. Next to the PCIe cards, they also come as u.2 formfactor drives. Combined with a cheap m.2-u.2 adaptor, they can even be run off m.2 slots. These Intel drives give you 1gig of dram cache, backed up by a bank of supercaps, flushing the cache to the flash even in the advent of sudden power loss. These drives offer good performance on random 4k read/writes, which is a common usage pattern. Please don't take the above as harsh criticism, I really want to applaud to what you show on youtube. Very nice stuff and fun to watch.
@TechDeals
@TechDeals 7 жыл бұрын
I always wanted an Intel 750, but the price prevented that from happening. :) Maybe in the future! I fully expect that most of the time, the SLC cache will be plenty for almost everyone, myself included... the Pro drives do have the benefit beyond speed of double the write endurance, almost double the warranty, and simply being a more robust drive. If I could afford it, I'd just buy 3x 2TB 960 Pro drives... :) but sadly, I'm not a famous rich KZbinr... (yet!) :)
@virtualinfinity6280
@virtualinfinity6280 7 жыл бұрын
if you always buy your stuff, the intel 750 are probably not what you would buy in the light of the 960 Pro - true. The 400G intel model is about the same price as the 512G 960 Pro, so whatever the marginal performance delta would be, you'd most likely end up getting the 960 Pro for the extra 100G. As for "if I could afford it", I'd put 4 2t 960 Pros in a HP Z Turbo drive Quad Pro, put that in a PCI-x16 3.0 slot and enjoy 8Tb of nVME storage in a covenient add-on card. Will not work in every board, as the card requires PCIe bifurcation support which may not be present in consumer boards. You may not want to run software RAID in this setup, but striping and/or mirroring individual filesystems is possible. Would be a nice-to-have item :) Just keep up and you'll eventually be the "famous rich KZbinr". Your stuff qualifies, as you're providing valuable consumer advice.

Thank-you for this well informed NVMe review. I would have probably bought the wrong drive and had less performance for money spent. This is my first build in nearly half a decade so boning up on new technology and innovations has proven difficult. You, however, have made my experience so much easier on many parts and decisions. Keep on giving us well-made, informative videos. Subscribed with a large "bell" toll!!!

You have that voice quality. Sometimes I need to get work done so I let a vid of yours play, hoping I can listen to it while I work - but usually I get all the way through it and retained nothing. =( No matter. Queue it up and listen to it again. :P Great job as always!

I just bought the 960 EVO 250gb nvme replacing my 850 evo sataIII for windows 10 OS. After a few testing it is not worth the upgrade. Compared install time of a program and even rendered a video multiple times. I shaved off a bit over a minuted rendering a video and shaved off a second install time of Unigine Valley. If you already have an SSD for ex 850 evo sataIII for your OS I recommend keeping that 850 evo for your OS and use your money and buy a bigger and cheaper sataIII SSD for gaming or for whatever else.

I just upgraded my Toshiba laptop to an 850 evo 500gb. Much master than the spinning hdd. I am soon doing a build of an i7-7700k and you pretty much nailed it as far as what I will be using in your build. Storage right now I am leaning toward an m2 ssd 960 evo 1 tb.

Thank you best timing ever! been looking at the evo compared to pro, decided the Samsung was the way I was going however couldn't work out which was best for me considering it was for gaming only, this video really helped which of the two to get only for the fact it was more in depth than the other videos I'd watched which really confused me more. Well done Tech Deals really respect the fact you keep it clear without fluff.

if you're like me and hate the long wait times for a game to install, go for a 960pro instead of the evo. most new games are larger than the slc cache and therefor the last bits would go at a snail's pace.

I'm getting a new computer, it comes with a 256GB NVMe drive, I've purchased a 256GB NVMe 960 EVO to put into the other slot. My question is will I be able to set them up in RAID 0? The OS is on the included drive so will I be able to set the two drives in RAID 0? Also need to say how much I love your channel. Haven't built a machine or kept up with things for almost 20 years, catching up now, and your clear explanations and honest no nonsense reviews are the best on the net!

Great review! Current prices btw are great for the lower end ones in this video. If you are a gamer / business user who does not write large files in the course of doing work, the lower end NVME drives are shockingly price competitive with the best Sata SSDs and outperform them. You are basically getting several hundred MBPS performance for no cost or even less money, and can put a pair in raid 0 to amplify the performance gains.

great video, you have better fluency and eloquence when talking than many news reporters, if you let me give you a suggestion, since your overall channel is very professional and well made, I suggest you to disable the automatic translation to spanish of your video title and description, I'm a native spanish speaker and youtube/google is doing a terrible job at translating them, and it feels like completely detached from the level of quality of everything you do. Also there is no option to disable this translation and many people like me ends up forced to a bad translated title that is more cryptic than just reading in english, just an advice! I hope you do a ssd/nvme comparison for 2018 models soon, cheers!
