My biggest trout was a brown trout caught in Switzerland's Saane river about a mile or two below the Schiffenen dam, caught accidentally while fishing for Perch on a Mepps spinner! It was a 63cm or ~25 inches female who just laid all of her eggs! I got a gold award and pin from the German "Fisch und Fang" magazine for this catch! That was way back in the days in the mid 90's... What a good time!!!

📌Liefe, you ought to bring GHEE with you, if you don't know, ghee is a type of clarified butter that doesn't need to be refrigerated, smoke point for cooking is much higher than butter as the water has been evaporated out. It's delicious!! And you won't need to pack as much with you. Btw, that may have been a large Golden Chanterelle mushroom.. If so, they are edible & choice!! You can always pick them & bring them home to make a spore print. And while hiking through burned areas especially year old burn spots, keep your eyes peeled for Morel mushrooms!! 😉 Thank you for taking us along in such gorgeous mountains & what a beauty of a fish!! 🥰

Thanks, Leif, for another wonderful upcountry backpack fishin video. It took me a minute to watch it, but it was well worth the wait! Im unable to backpack upcountry like i used to do anymore so i truly appreciate ur videos n ur tips are spot on. If u measure the width of ur hand at the knuckles, u have a ready made measuring device. I used to use it for bear front paws when i used to bow hunt them. Those were awesome fish u caught. Thats the reason i did it. Many pb trout are available. Love that cool off after a hot hike! Keep the videos coming n take care! Im also an avid fly fisherman, n it has always been a go-to if the fish aren't interested. I've also caught larger fish on the fly versus the spin cast. God Bless n Fish on!

That place is absolutely beautiful. I love your channel and have been subscribed for years. I rarely comment but you got life by the horns my friend. You have a ranch with goats and chickens and ducks and Guinea hens, and living life the way it should be lived. Just naturally and without pretense. Fishing lakes around you and excited about life. I’m 61 now and lived a really crazy life in nature but now my hips are shot and I just can’t hike miles anymore. It used to be a breeze. Never even thought about it. Surfing in Hawaii for most my life. Me and dad sailed from San Francisco to Hawaii in 1984 on his old beautiful Tahiti ketch. We sailed all around the South Pacific, just headed back to Hawaii. Saw the most beautiful things this planet has to offer. Dad moved to Canada with his wife and she died shortly after of lung cancer. Dad was alone now and I worried about him. He was still writing his short stories and publishing them but his heart wasn’t in it anymore. I knew I was losing my dad. My best friend. My sailing partner. He called me from Vancouver Island and said I should fly up there from Hawaii. He’s got a surprise trip for us. I’m like, “What? Where?” And he said, “Son, just get up here.” Me and dad had sailed all over the South Pacific together so I’m thinking he’s got something crazy planned and he won’t tell me what it is. That’s dad. Always mysterious and loves a surprise. So I took vacation time and flew up to Nanaimo, BC. I figured this was our last great adventure together and I was right. He’s getting old but his mind is sharp as ever. Basically he’s messing with his son like he always did. I don’t fall for the same tricks anymore but I love watching him try. “Okay dad, what’s the plan, where are we going.” He nodded, “You’re from Hawaii and need a visitor fishing license. We’ll be gone five days.” And that’s all he said. I know this man very well and he’s toying with me and I’m not biting. I know we’re going on a fishing trip but I don’t know where and I’m not stupid enough to ask. It’s a surprise so I played along. And dad milked it as long as possible. It was a dream trip. We drove to Eagle River and hopped on a Cessna float plane out 50 miles from civilization and landed on a lake in the mountains. Middle of nowhere. No humans for 50 miles at least. No roads to this place. You can only get here by floatplane. “Okay dad, this is gonna be cool. It’s no surprise, I figured you’d pull something like this.” He just laughed. It was a lake with a cabin, the only cabin, and it was an abandoned ranger station with three walls and a bear lock on the back door. And I’m looking at the open wall on the front porch. We can lock the bears out from the back door but they’ll just easily climb up on the porch and into the cabin. I’m thinking this old ranger who lived here was insane. But, we saw no bears the whole week we were there. Trout and salmon were jumping like crazy all over our lake. It was ridiculous! It was fall and salmon were heading up river to spawn but this was obviously a rest area on the lake connected to the river. Just fish splashing constantly day and night, it was hard to fathom how many fish were here. Thousands easily. We brought with us, a couple steaks and potatoes and butter but that’s about it. The plan was to survive on fish for the rest of the week. And we did. These trout have never seen a human before. Never seen fishing line or a hook. They bit on every cast. So did the salmon. We ate well on that trip. I had my guitar and dad had his harmonica. We played old blues tunes on the rickety old porch every night. The floatplane picked us up on Thursday at noon. I didn’t want to leave. This was the most wild and beautiful mountain lake I’d ever seen. Ever fished. Best trip by far and last trip with my dad. I mean, I could say our sailing adventures were better because we were younger but this was our last voyage and it was special. Miss you dad.

Your story left me speechless man... That's a dream of mine, to fly into an area so remote that man does not exist. Away from even trails existing. And don't even get me started on sailing the world! @@NWFishingSecrets , Thanks man. You’re in Washington and this is one of the better places to do the float plane drop off fishing trip. I’m in Washington now as well but I haven’t done that kinda trip here. I imagine the Cascades would be one of the best areas for that. And you’re right that once you get dropped off and that plane leaves, you really are alone as it gets. The silence is deafening. You know you won’t see another human again until it’s that same pilot you saw five days ago. No trails leading to or from this place. It really was wild and you definitely have to do this one day. It may be difficult to make a video of a trip like that but we got plenty of pictures. Keep up the great work and thanks for the kind words. 🤙🏼

Caught my first high mountain lake trout on the fly last week. Like 4 inches long but someday, I’d love to get just one like you did! What a fish!

Such a great trip, I have heard of big cutthroats in the alpine lakes but never seen one so strong, and I love that you only use one fly for all lake.

Those were such awesome trout you caught this trip, very cool to see you catch them on the fly line. Always love watching your adventures, looked like a couple awesome lakes to be at and enjoy. Thanks for sharing and putting together for us.
