For those who are curious the native ISO for the NX1 camera is ISO 200

Nice tutorial! I would only add a couple things as suggestions. I would change the ISO from 1 steps to 1/3 steps. for video shooting, you can see your exact framing prior to recording by using the video STBY feature, or you can change your stills aspect to 16 x 9.

I just recently bought the NX500 (upgraded from a NX100) so this video should still be somewhat applicable since the NX500 is the NX1's little brother, especially since the NX500 just got a firmware update that addresses some of it's shortcomings.

On my Samsung NX500 I set the auto iso not to go above 800 for night, and 200 for day time shots, with 400 at either sunrise, or sunset. Anything over 1600 causes too much grain when zooming in for small detail correction in Element 14, and Corel Paint Shop 7.

Hi Tony, Thanks for this tutorial. I have a question though. IM very new to photography and currently use a compact Sony NEX 5N and want to upgrade. Would this Samsung NX1 be an ideal camera or can you recommend a less expensive make/model? I know some of Samsung's in the past were Pentax models with a different badge, which was often a little cheaper on the high-street. Can you make a recommendation for a novice wanting to own there first full frame DSLR but still get fantastic results.

Hi Tony, I just bought the NX1. I'm finding it hard to find any type of on camera control accessories to do portraits in a studio setting. Samsung has a cable release, but not any type of external flash units to control studio lighting from the camera. I love the camera, but I'm getting a little concerned on the limitations that I'm up against. Thanks for any info on this.

Hey Tony, great vid! With the interval timer, is there a way to turn the LCD screen off while it shoots an timelapse? In shooting long timelapses, the LCD screen drains the battery. Would be great if there was a way to turn it off. Thanks for your response!

Be careful; Samsung no longer makes cameras or lenses. You might find good used prices, but if you buy it, you'll never be able to upgrade.

You can edit with Lightroom 5.7 or later (RAW Files are .SRW) and Lightroom 6, CC. Also you can edit in Affinity Photo on Mac.

so this why the camera on the phone is ahead of its time. My S7 was doing 60FPS before iPhone did it to their phone now the S20 and S21 records in 8K HDR iPhone 12 is only 4K

the first time i used the nx1 was to record my brother playing a classical guitar recital can you believe it no matter where you put the gain it was on auto giving it the sound of the amps looking for sound in between each pluck of the string could not believe that such a error could be made samsung have at last given me the best gift a film maker can have manual sound with no gain hiss if you ever record drums or any hard sharp sounds the recording will hump you might not know whats wrong there is no hiss it just sounds strange the Greatest asset to my filming was the attenuating button on my canon film camera filming drum n bass hardcore one fraction of overload spoils the whole video also making rave films for the last 30 yrs a slow shutter speed was the only way to give the effect of having a couple of ees would you believe i filmed the PRODIGY 25 yrs ago canon exhi 1 footage perfect most important sound perfect now i can film like it with nx1 garry

+Aaron Yang In the real world, with more shooting, I decided that it doesn't perform nearly as well as the Canon 7D Mark II for sports (sdp.io/7d2). The NX-1 does awesome for a mirrorless camera, and it's better than the 7D2 in some ways, but for real-world sports, I still prefer the 7D2.

I don't think it is necessary. Samsung to most photographers is just an afterthought. When I go to the camera rental stores, 7D2 and 5D3 were never available, but NX1 has always been there. I've rent it so many times that I feel it is time for me to make decision on which sport camera to buy. But for 99% of the masses, NX1 was never ever considered an option.

+Aaron Yang I own the NX1 I love it. It out performs anything in its class! The problem is that Samsung is not a big name in the market right now like Canon and Nikon.That is why if you go to a rental store you will see it there.

Hey Tony, I'm a beginning photographer and I have a question that may seem silly. Why would you need a better lens if you could create 1) Background blur in Photoshop 2) Correct distortion in Lightroom/Photoshop 3) Increase sharpness in Lightroom/Photoshop etc. Essentially, can't you do everything a lens does in Photoshop or Lightroom?

kallurimeister1 Blurring in post never looks quite right, and it takes much longer. Distortion isn't a big deal, though. Sharpness never adds more detail.

I'm a fellow "newb", but sharpening in post can also exaggerate noise present in the photo, and a large aperture also enables you to use a lower ISO when you do not need a large depth of field; it also lets more light into the viewfinder.

I still own this camera in 2024 and it’s fantastic. I love the high-quality photos that I get out of it and I have multiple Samsung cameras that work very well but I use the Samsung NX1 as my main photography camera. I absolutely love this camera. I still think it’s worth getting. Longer you wait the harder is to find. Found mine for sale on a very good deal, considering what the camera is capable of how much stuff with it from the seller. They gave me four lenses and two UV filters and a camera for $800 and was that a good deal. That was more stuff than advertised on his eBay advert for the camera. It’s the best deal I’ve seen this camera ever. I saw that and I just could not let it go so I had to buy the camera and everything that came with and I’m happy that I did. I’ve had the camera for four years now and it’s one of the best cameras I’ve ever used probably the best cam that I’ve ever used, although if you wanted to get a canon 90D I would say that’s the only camera on the market that competes with the Samsung and you the camera that Tony is showing here is 2014 and Canon didn’t make their camera until 2019 which meant for all those years in between Samsung had the best APSC on the market even though they weren’t technically selling the camera it was still the best one available until 2019 but I do one day plan on getting the Canon 90D one day.

Larry Watts There is virtually none in 4k, in 1080p there are some. Also the earlier firmware had issues with macro blocking in video and banding, however its less noticeable now that Samsung turned up the bitrate for video again in 1.31

Larry Watts Is it a raw file? It helps watching it on a 4k monitor. Since when you watch it on a 1080p screen its down sampled.
