Welcome to “Black News Tonight” hosted by Marc Lamont Hill.
Coming up, Andrew Cuomo has resigned as the governor of New York in the aftermath of a report that found he sexually harassed 11 women. New York State Attorney General Letita James said, “Today closes a sad chapter for all of New York, but it's an important step towards justice.” Kathy Hochul will replace Cuomo as the state’s first female governor.
Also, with COVID-19 cases rising in Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis is warning school officials that he could withhold their salaries if they require mask wearing in schools. A week ago, he signed an executive order forbidding school districts from requiring students to wear masks.
The demographics of America continue to change, as the new official numbers for the new census will be released on Aug. 12. Latino and Asian populations have doubled since 1990. The Latino population has gone from 10% to 20%, the Asian population has increased from 3% to 6% and the Black American population has remained steady at 12.5%. For the first time ever, the white population has been on the decline.
