Hi Im in Long Ilsna d and have a lot of the same plants (Banana, Windmill Palm, Needle Palm, Yucca Rostrata, Cold Hardy Orange , Hardy Agave etc) When you say you cover a lot of your plants , How much do you do? I wrap my windmill with a thermacube that comes on around 30 degrees with a space heater Mine is about 10 to 12 feet tall My needle palm as well as the other plants I do not wrap at all If you wrap your palms that must be a lot of work My Yuccas are doing amazingly well so many people that see it cannot believe they are hardy My oldest one is not about 10 plus feet tall My orange tree finall put out fruit this year too Im thinking aboout getting a hardy pomagranite The needle palm is amazing also as it need no protection at all Happy New Year , Sincerly Bill
@newyorktropicalgarden93642 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill. I do it all and it's a lot of work. My windmills are the easiest. The Washingtonias, dates and other less hardy palms are the hardest and the most work. I would love to see pictures. Happy New Year to you!

Could I plant a castor plant and brugmansia where my dogs are around?
@newyorktropicalgarden9364 Жыл бұрын
Hi there. I have three dogs and I have never had a problem with the dogs even touching either plant. And I have friends who bring their dogs over and the run the property without issue. And that goes true for my sago palms as well. I would suggest you don't let the seeds fall from castor beans just to be safe. But I don't even do that. I read that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson used to have castor bean contest both in growing gigantic plants but also some stupid things with the seeds.

You got a awesome tropical garden in the Hudson Vally. You need some Sabal minor, and Sabal Louisiana. Those two Palms could survive in your area planted outdoors. Do not cover the Sabal Palmetto in a dark situation it will cause them to rot and die. They need an actual clear Greenhouse with light coming in, and temps at least 40F continuously to survive.
@newyorktropicalgarden93642 жыл бұрын
Hi JT... I don't know how I missed this message from you. Thank you for the advice. I have one Sabal Minor I need to show. I alwasy forget. And I have been trying to keep my Sabal Palmetto very warm.

@newyorktropicalgarden93642 жыл бұрын
Hi there. I somehow missed this comment. Thank you. I have lights in my garage and I put most of the tropicals that don't stay outside in there. That's the easy part. Covering the palms outside is much more involved. And I love giving garden tours. But come in the summer!

What a jaw dropping display. I cannot even imagine the man hours required to keep this going. I have an 11 ft trachy in nearby CT and I thought I was doing something with my life. This is a whole new level. If you allow private tours I must come see this; please let me know how to get in touch. Also, which Etsy shop sold you the mule palm ? Been lookin all over. Bravo sir.
@newyorktropicalgarden93642 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris. Thanks for watching. You are welcome to come anytime. I love giving tours. I may make you leave with some extra palms :) I bought my mule palm through WekivaFoliage. It arrived in great shape. I have had good luck on Etsy so far with palms. I love that you have an 11 foot Trachy. And I believe Brandon of CT Palms has found a source for larger mule palms if you know him. Stay warm.

@@newyorktropicalgarden9364 Awesome. When do you typically take down winter structures??
@newyorktropicalgarden93642 жыл бұрын
@@chrisgusjohnson Good morning. I usually take down the Trachy covers mid March or as soon as the weather doesn't look like its going to go below 20 F (-6.6 C) If the weather gets nicely warm I start opening up the front of the Washingtonias, Date Palms, Pindos, etc, knowing I can quickly close them back up if we get late cold weather. This is usually in April. Glad we are starting to warm up on the East Coast

It depends on the plant and the duration of the cold
