@@JoseRamos-jn6ij our December is looking a little scary. Maybe January will be a big warm up for us!

Great video tim, sad to see it all packed away, but glad you got it all protected in time! it looks like quite a storm is hitting the US right now 😮 have you tempted leaving any of the trachycarpus un protected for an experiment through the winter? they are supposedly hardy down to about 0 f . although id probably be a bit hesitant if i lived in NY lol

Thank you so much. And it's so funny I was just chatting with someone about the fact that next year I am going to try and plant Trachycarpus and see if they will survive on their own. I have so many baby palms that it will be worth the experiment. If I could get them to get through the winter that would be amazing. But yes, It's going to be very cold here for the next two weeks at least.

@newyorktropicalgarden9364 haha great minds aye!? 😎👊 i would think for most winters it would be fine a cold winter could pose an issue, but i would think if it were growing with some overhead protection from an evergreen tree or something would help it. they do look cool covered in snow 😎🌴 maybe worth a kinda half effort 🤔 perhaps try only protecting the crown with your normal covers but leave the trunk open ? if it were me id probably try it with a smaller palm maybe around 3ft of trunk, and just go no protection, but perhaps have some ready if its looking like its gonna be really cold and just put it on for cold cold temps. i wouldnt protect mine here unless we were due to have below 10f but we rarely get that low if at all here. i think you would be surprised how hardy a medium size plant would be! anything without a trunk i think would struggle as they are only hardy to about 15f with no trunk for the most part.

@newyorktropicalgarden9364 also if you dont already have one the rhapidophyllum hystrix needle palm should be ok unprotected its i think they can go down to -5f unprotected and are the hardiest species of palm supposedly but they dont trunk at all from what i know. 🤷♂️

@@richf_tropical_garden_projects I am only protect them the first year. I had a couple die on me and I learned that is the key

@@richf_tropical_garden_projects I definitely want to try this. And it's great for youtube as an experiment

Hello Tim, My winter boxes are very well sealed to protect my palm trees from cold. But I wonder if I need to leave some little gaps/holes to provide at least little air ventilation, even though it can decrease the temperature inside a little?
@newyorktropicalgarden936421 күн бұрын
@@Pavel-q1r8s I definitely would allow some ventilation. You don’t want to seal it too tight

@@newyorktropicalgarden9364 Thank you, Tim! How do you allow for some ventilation? Do you just attach the foam panels not too tight, or some other way to provide some ventilation?
@newyorktropicalgarden93644 күн бұрын
@@PashkaTLT That's a great question. I used to make them super tight, but now I definitely leave a little to ventilate. Also the crazy woodpecker has definitely added some ventilation. It's finally going to warm up tomorrow and I will open a few up to check on them. It's been so cold here in NY
