New York City approved a congestion pricing plan that would charge most drivers $15 for driving into midtown and Lower Manhattan during peak travel times. Supporters say the plan is aimed at reducing gridlock, but not all area residents and workers are pleased. NBC News’ George Solis reports.

Yep, but it would be branded as a carbon tax, since one exhales CO2. Wouldn't surprise me if some places are considering it. As with many taxes, lower to middle income people will be most affected.

Wow, I thought I would never say this. We now have the government of a local state and a local city. Yes they got traffic. They got a lot of people there try to get from point a to point B but you’ve got to punish the drivers by taxing them for driving at certain times during the day, tell me that’s one step of taking the freedom away from your every day life to be punished because there’s too many people in that house that you find so great awesome I avoid toll roads I’d rather go a little further away than spending money on the toll road, which was a Road for me to drive on originally before you guys decided to make income off of it Good luck, New Yorkers with that.

There is a charge 24/7. But with less people driving the roads will be faster. And this applies to people from anywhere in the US at least. And whatever roads you’re going to be on will be faster and likely better maintained now that the roads are paying for themselves directly.

@@QuarioQuario54321 - I agree that it has been shown to increase revenue, but as to working? New York City is not as spread out as other places like LA, making a more confined congestion area which is going to impact drivers whom, in many cases, do not have the option of going to other less congested areas for business or shopping reasons like they do in a less compacted city. I'm just gonna say it. There's no way to make a solution that everyone will like. People wanna say public transport isn't safe or clean, yet if we try to make rules or laws to make a difference, people don't care, take a second to remember the one ordinance we've ever had that made people think about others safety and lives for a second, now if you look at countries that have safe transport they've had the social norm to wear a mask when sick no matter what for years. I'm not bringing this up as a mask aurgment, more of an you can see the difference between American attitudes towards others with this. Another example is a video showing a womens only capartment in Japan on the subway, cue an American man being so dumbfounded at the prospect that he parades through recording. Maybe we should start holding each other accountable instead of looking the other way. Then maybe we could actually start having good public transport, less congested roads, and an overall better community.

I agree with this. People call it a tax on the poor, but NYC is the one part of America where this isn’t the case. Furthermore, in an area as dense as downtown Manhattan, the space needed to move around something the size of a car is a luxury that you should have to pay for. Because giving that space away for free isn’t gonna be free to the pedestrians and cyclists who you’d be displacing, bus riders who’ll experience delays due to traffic, and literally anyone who’d use space set aside for parking for a different purpose. Obviously most interviewed will be against it if you only interview drivers of private vehicles (which you are here).
