The city where I used to live had homeless shelters, and eventually I came to the conclusion that no matter how much capacity or what amenities they had, they'd always turn into dens of crime and drug use. If the city offered more, people would just continue to come in and stay until it again got to the point where people would rather choose the streets. So ultimately I think there's a balance, at least for the politicians, in choosing to provide enough shelter space to appease the people who want it to be there, but avoiding drawing in too much crime and straining the budget and city services.

If the average resident with section 8 housing vouchers actually took care of the place they are renting, and didn't destroy or wreck the place. Maybe more people would accept section 8 housing vouchers. Because the only ones that can afford to keep up with it are getting grants on top of the vouchers to make up for all the expense that comes with these dirty and destructive people! That was until the last few years when the border and the immigrants were moved to states farther north. Suddenly it became an issue when those people had to experience and deal with the flood coming into their neighborhoods and only after a couple of years whet the borders states had been dealing with for decades. It's not just the increase in crime, but the demand on the local resources like money, housing, food, medical, and schools just to name a few. The demand is far greater than what can be provided.

The “affordable housing “ theory is a joke. How is it affordable when you still can’t afford food, utilities, etc? Especially in NYC. There are still many areas of blighted buildings that the city could acquire. One would think they would have learned after tossing away so many other incredible things for utter crap or projects that did not end up happening, but the previous building was already demolished. By the way, the homeless elderly probably wouldn’t be homeless if NYC did not coddle the illegals and shove them anywhere they could, sometimes evicting the existing residents in the process.

Welfare recipients receiving Section 8 housing vouchers want more affordable housing so that they can continue to live in Manhattan. WTF? It is NOT the responsibility or duty of the American taxpayers to provide subsidized housing so that people can live anywhere they want, even in the most expensive real estate market in the U.S. and the world. I want to live in Malibu near the ocean but don't because I can't afford it.

The city of Nashville has been ruined by mixed use housing. There are currently around 37,000 apartments under construction in Nashville. Every mom and pop business and restaurant in our city is gone. They have torn down most of our history and historic places to build mixed use housing. Prices on apartments have only increased, and no one wants to pay market price of $1800 a month for a one bedroom to live in the same building as homeless people paying $200 so they just wind up ghettos with drugs and dealers surrounding them. When all of the homeless and low income get their checks on the 1st of the month the dealers show up and crime runs rampant. They also mix the elderly and disabled in the buildings which puts them in danger.

That's always the problem. While most homeless are not drug users and/or mentally ill at any given time, some are, and it's a big chunk of the long-term homeless population. While you can try to screen for drug use in subsidized housing, that costs more and if you do that you still wind up with homeless on the streets, so now you've got to justify spending more taxpayer money and still having a visible homeless population. If you don't, then that worst element tends to dominate any subsidized housing, and if it is mixed use they drive out anyone who can afford to leave. And arresting every user for drug crimes just shifts the problem to the prisons and, as 'the war on drugs' shows, tends to be too difficult to do in practice, to say nothing of issues of justice. An interesting hypothetical is if the law-abiding portion of those developments could afford firearms and vigilante laws were a bit more relaxed, but I don't know if there's good data on that.

This pushed all of the elderly teachers out to build four tall skinny houses on one lot ranging from one million to two million each. Now they are talking about building project housing for teachers to keep them in the city. You literally have to make a min of $80,000 a year and up to live here now. I don't think any senior plans for that. I now live in an efficiency for $1800 with a shared kitchen on each floor just to stay in town where my children and grandchildren live. What about all the empty buildings that are in N.Y.C. That is owned by the city? What not renovate them into affordable apartments? No neighborhood should have to lose their park, especially if it’s the only IN that neighborhood! That’s just asinine! And let’s face facts, any thing they build on that property isn’t going to house homeless seniors. This mayor will put illegals into them. And that’s why he wants this property. I’m wondering how long it will be before this mayor targets Central Park to be torn down for public housing? Doesn’t the city own it too?
