His father worked the same time my dad worked as a NYC fireman. He would come home and throw his clothes in the hamper, which was in the bathroom. And the whole bathroom would smell of smoke. Those guys worked hard. The city was poor, a lot of unrest, many building owners burning their buildings for insurance money. My dad was stationed in the south Bronx at that time, one of the busiest houses because of all the arson. People watching them would throw bricks at them while they’re putting out the fires. I’m so glad they now get the respect they deserve. It’s a special calling, to be a firefighter. My dad was my hero. I love that this guy is an antibully person. I was bullied as a kid. Wish he was my big brother

@@VioletJoy I think people who don't know don't want to know, anyone who wants to know can find out. It's ironically a sign of how well we've done as a society minimizing the harshness of reality for the majority of people, where many never have to experience it at all. Unfortunately it has resulted in a stigma for anyone who might expose them to that reality. How can a fireman be friends with a tech bro or other irrationally wealthy people who go yachting for fun? One lives life riding on the back of society and take it for granted, the other IS the back... it should be a mutually respectful relationship but wealthy people hide and don't look at what it takes to maintain the good society they enjoy.

15 years working Fire&Rescue in UK; Kids on rough estates used to steal cars, torch them in the streets to get the fire brigade out, and then pelt our guys with bricks etc. Thats when we had to start putting CCTV on the pumps. There's a lot of imbeciles out there..

I used to love to going to my Dad firehouse in the South Bronx. They had a keg of beer in there hangout room & penthouse magazines. But nostop alarms. I even got to go to a car fire on the rig. That is Brotherhood.

I became a firefighter shortly after 9/11 occurred. I had to do something. I was too old to become a paid Fireman, so while living in Upstate, NY I became a Volunteer Firefighter @ Westmere FD. Trained by State of NY, I was a Class "A" Fireman and Quartermaster for 5 years. It was a tremendous experience and I would highly recommend. It takes commitment and shows what you're made of. To experience what FF's do was awesome. I've always lived near a firehouse. 🙂 I'm now 66.

What a truly gentleman. I agree we all need to feel love and be loved. I was brought up with a single parent. Never really felt I was wanted. Met my husband. Had a son. We were totally the family I missed in my early life. Sadly lost my husband in an accident. So my son lost his daddy and I lost my soul mate. My son is 26 years old now and is my best friend. Since my loss,Men have come and gone in my life but my love for my late husband still is as strong as ever.

I love this man. The way he spoke about his family and how they affected his view on the world and what he’s learned and done. His empathy for people others look down upon is heartwarming. He made me sad because I can’t be a parent and so my husband can’t be a father. But I think the whole world is better for having such a man as this in it. His kids are very lucky people, and so are any others who have or will come across him. He makes want to have a hug.

You could always be a foster parent, if you have love for a child. I used to work with a woman who fostered babies waiting to be placed. She was single and wasn't sure if she wanted children of her own, and she found it so fulfilling. She said she had to slow down taking them, bc she was getting attached and would be really sad to let them go. Even though her time with them was brief, I have to believe they have a better chance in life bc of her. She might be the only one to ever show them love, bc lots of people do it for the money. It's sad, but it is true. Anyway, just a suggestion. I have no idea what your situation is, or what you want from life, but I figured it deosn't hurt to throw that out there. Take care.

Niels, my first thought at the end of your interview was that you are a hero. A man whose heart is to always be the best human being he can be. A man who deserves respect because he respects others. A man who will look beyond someone’s situation to consider there is more to the story. I am happy about the way you love people, especially your family. You don’t need to tell us about being put back in school or how many times you took the captain’s test to tell us you know your not perfect. The FDNY/NYPD hockey game was actually televised on ESPN. We’re not quite at that level but you know you’re in for a tough game anytime you play the cops.

I can only hope that the FDNY or any other fire service around the world can get together with Niels to write training modules and maybe make a course that is like a world standard for cutting edge training, understanding, and teaching workshops etc. idk what would be the best way to go about it, to extract and use all the information from Niels into whatever works best to get the most out of people like Niels in all fields of Emergency Services and other fields that include urgent or emergency situations for those just starting out in early training, right thru their training course. Thank you for sharing that part of your story, and I look forward to part 2. Thank you, Niels. Thank you for sharing such a fascinating story, my dad was a firefighter here in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia, for nearly 20 years before he had to leave. You helped me tap into my experiences as a little kid, also being absolutely fixated on being a firefighter like my dad. Was lucky enough to go on two call outs when I was only real young. We’re talking 40 years ago so laws and regulations were not anything like today. I’d get to go to Dad’s work for a Sunday and other days. Listening to this in the early hours of Monday morning, thinking about good times I remember with my dad. (Dad was very ill for many years and I proudly cared for him for a good while, so a lot of my memories that were wedged into my brain were of him very ill and dying.) Just now I got to remember him being larger than life, I had all the gear, and one of dad’s old helmets, it was amazing. These days were, and still are, some of the best childhood memories I experienced. Every time I see a fire truck, with it’s lights and sirens on, I think of Dad in a special way because he was so loved and respected by his company, And Dad loved and respected his company, and lead by example and would never ask one of them to do something he wouldn’t do for them. It was a long time ago now, but when I’d ever chat with a firefighter, I’d ask them if they worked with him and they’d giggle or look at me in a certain way, and tell me a story about him, about work or about his twisted sense of humour. I’m sorry if I’m making this sound like a tribute to my dad when it’s about another firefighter, but you reminded me of things from 40 plus years ago and it was so good to remember some of those memories by listening to your story. Thank you for your service. Thank you for sharing your story and I look forward to part 2, as yours is one of Mark’s best. You know you’re in for something interesting when someone clocks 51.37, little did I know just how fascinating it was and how much of a treat it was for the little kid inside me. For that, gentlemen. I never liked my New yourk accent, and the Staten Island accent has a particular sound. People have no idea the lifelong ramifications and damage that bullying does to a child! I should have married a Firefighter. They hold the exact same values morals and humbleness and the whole helping people thing. I love the backbone they carry with them. This is so refreshing. I'm single and 65 so hey wish I knew a man exactly like this. Blessings

My father was a lieutenant in the fdny. He was scheduled to work on 9/11. That day happens to be my birthday and my father took off to spend time with me. Every guy from ladder 105 engine 219 perished that day. I’ll never forget and always be in debt to captain Vincent Brunton and the rest of the firefighters that responded on that day. Thank you for your service Niels, I’m sure we have met at some point and I’m sure you know my father ❤

I can't stop watching him. He reminds me of my Dad. He was technically my stepdad but he came into my life when I was 4 years old and I lost him suddenly to a stroke in 2016. He was only just turned 64. Most devastating event of my life. Other than making myself go to work, I didn't get out of bed for 3 years. But this man so much reminds me of him, I'm entranced. This guy is a blessing.
