NYC public schools changing reading curriculum for young students

Half of New York City public school students in grades 3-8 fail their reading tests. That's why the city announced plans Tuesday to dramatically change the way children are taught to read. CBS2 political reporter Marcia Kramer says this project is personal for Mayor Eric Adams, who was taunted as a child because he couldn't read.

Those numbers are scary. My nephew was failing math. My sister sat down with him and helped him do his homework got him math workbooks, made him watch math KZbin videos, got him video games related to math and he was enrolled in virtual tutoring. He went from 70s to 90s. In 5th grade, I wasn’t doing well in English grammar, my mother enrolled me in Saturday school. A plus. School can only do so much if there isn’t an involved parent at home.

This is why I don’t like when people say that parents can’t homeschool their kids. Parental involvement in education is crucial as you see that not all kids thrive in public schools.

Kids have too many subjects in school, with a lot of focus on STEM. The summer vacations are too long and impractical for today’s lifestyle. Also the overall culture is one of video games and other entertainment, while social media and advertising make things confusing. I understand why we’re here.
