Wonderful, nostalgic video. Lived in Rockaway Park until my college years. Used the Rockaway Line often. Rode the first train from Howard Beach on the day it opened. Always remember looking at the remains of the abandoned LIRR Rockaway Beach Branch and wondering what might have been had that been used rather than the slow, ugly trip on the old Fulton Street El and Euclid Avenue. Someone mentioned that the MTA had instituted slower speeds on most or all of the lines. Looking at this video, I guess it's accurate. The trip across the Jamaica Bay island appears to be as slow as the day the line opened. Awful.

A couple of questions, On the panel shots it looks like the T/O is opening the doors by pressing the door indicator light on the main panel. Isn't this the Conductors job? (The Conductor does close them). Also I see this mostly on the Rockaway line, though I think it's also on a couple of other locations on the system. An example at the Far Rockaway/Rockaway Pk Interlock off the Bridge, the signal aspect for what appears to be the diverging line to Rockaway Pk is Green over Green, where the straight pass thru is Green over Yellow. Normally this would be the reverse. Another example is the interlocks at Rockaway Blvd. Any reason why this is the case?
@FanRailer6 жыл бұрын
The T/O must "enable" the door controls to allow the C/R to open. It's an additional safety step just in case the T/O overshoots or undershoots and needs to adjust before opening up.
@FanRailer6 жыл бұрын
As for your question about the homeballs, remember that it's not about the direction the tracks go in, but whether or not the route is the main route, or the diverging route. In the case of Rockaway Boulevard, the route to Lefferts existed before the connection to Rockaway, and so therefore the Rock lineup gets the diverging aspect. Same concept for the north junction of Hammels Wye. the route to Rock Park is the main route, while the route to Mott Avenue is the diverging, as originally, the LIRR ran through here, and used that routing.

they did that because back in the day drivers and conductors didn't need all this sophisticated mechanical and technological things all they needed was a brake handle and a throttle handle with a little emergency brake, a light and a few buttons it was that simple

Does anyone know how that dead man's throttle works? I've been watching him operate the train but I can't figure out what's what
@BDavinci062 жыл бұрын
The dead man's feature on this particular train is on the handle and usually on most New York City Subway equipment. The train operator has to constantly hold on to the handle while operating the train if he or she lets go of the handle and the train is not in full service then the train automatically dumps meaning the emergency brakes are activated. Oftentimes, constantly holding the master control does tire out your hand so sometimes it train operator will put the controller on full service to temporarily rest their hands. On New Tech equipment, the feature is similar, although you have to turn the master controller at 90 degrees horizonically.
@fredashay4 жыл бұрын
The way he's holding that handle at 20:14 looks like he has to keep downward pressure on it at all times and is tiring to do so, and so is struggling to keep it held down constantly. As much as I like trains, I wouldn't want that job if my suspicion is true.
@aydenamaya79513 жыл бұрын
Yea its a old safety system dating back to the to the early 1910s. It has been used on almost every subway car, on the LIRR M3/M1 and Metro North M1/M2/M3A/M4/M6. If you let go of it then the emergency brake will go on. You need a certain brake application for it to go up and not dump the air

😂😂😂 If you ever come down here as a train operator you find that every train has their unique qualities about them in operating. No two trains even of the same class of trains are the same. There may be similar in some way but never the same. You'll find that out when you come down here that is not as easy as you think to operate trains like in the Subway.

Outdoor track are treated more carefully due to the differing conditions that can affect the ability of the train to stop. For instance, unlike railroads with locomotives that use sand for adhesion, the NYC Subway has no such thing.
