The thing is that when you do call police they say the same thing "if they haven't harmed you then we really can't doing anything." Then if I defend myself, I can end up in a lawsuit or perhaps even worse. You literally have to leave a paper/digital/audible trail on how you have exhausted all possibilities to evade the danger from someone who wants to harm you before you defend yourself so that you can prove you truly believed you were in danger because if not --- straight to jail. 🙃

THANK YOU for addressing this and speaking to New Yorkers instead of trusting the BS stats. I have experienced several instances of SA harassment and scary situations. Recently during rush hour I saw two guys doing drugs in between cars which led to one almost overdosing on the train. I saw all the color drain from his face and he turned a weird grey color. His accomplice dragged him onto the platform where a stranger helped bring him back to consciousness. The Show Time guys are incredibly threatening and violent if you decline to acknowledge them. The NYPD is somewhat present but there are still a lot of them on their phones instead of patrolling and being proactive. When I’ve called 911 the operators are dismissive and you feel helpless so you just hang up. I make sure to sit near women and people I deem to be less threatening if possible. I've noticed when there is a crazy person on the train a lot of us women will make eye contact with each other as an acknowledgment of protection of each other. These experiences are why I can give grace and leniency to people like Daniel Penny who stand up and do something because no one else does.

Uneducated people use this as a weapon when if they do research on why people say defund the police, then they would know that it means that police primarily in nyc are getting billions in funds compared to other government entities. If the police are getting billions in funding then why is crime still ramped? We call to defund the police so other things can get the same funding such as, healthcare, education and fixing up streets and having better housing and raising the wage. The fact is the police departments have not been defunded whatsoever and we are still seeing crime happen at an extreme rate so before you decide to use that term again as a weapon educate yourself.
