NYC unveils new trash collection tech for the first time since 1930's | NBC new York

Starting this fall, New York City will roll out a program that requires small buildings with less than nine units to put their trash in assigned wheelie bins. ⁠

Larger buildings with more than 31 units will use the new European-style on-street containers and these will be serviced by the new automated sideloading trucks, but the new technology paraded by city officials on Thursday won't be put to use until 2025.⁠

the issue WOULDN’T be the same. 1) there would be lots more dumpsters and 2) in a dumpster they could be laying undetected on top on trashbags, not inside a trashbag.

Curious why they are piloting the other trash tech that is out there. Trashcans or dumpsters that are underground. This way the trash truck pulls out the dumpster and just releases it like dust from a self contained vacuum (with a bottom that releases) These are way better, keep the trash out of the elements and keeps most pests out. Including trying to get certain types of items that are too big. Like a human body from being dumped inside These underground dumpsters even are computer measured. So if it gets too full they can dispatch a truck to pick it up Seems like this is a halfway between good and bad. Making this solve 'just enough' They need better funding for the Sanitary Department

Normally in other countries each apartment has its own smaller bin on wheels stored not on the side of the street but beside the building. Only brought out on day of collection. Other busy cities can make it work.

I hate that they talk as if they came up with some type of new inventions or innovation.
