I think the fluffy steamed bun ones are baozi, and xiao long bao are specifically soup dumplings with the thin skin (not the fluffy kind like in the video)

@@bodegacatx Yeah no, xiao long bao is definitely specifically soup dumplings. The sandwhich-y bao are specifically called "Gua Bao" because they're bao that have been cut ("Gua") in half to put fillings in. The fluffy dumplings are the original bao, and Gua Bao only became popular in America in 2006 when Momofuku Ssam Bar started doing pork buns with them. It's always been the fluffy dumpling type before that. Also calling them "Bao Buns" is redundant like saying "chai tea" instead of just "chai" because "bao" means "bun". It's just "bao".

Baohaus! How funny, I read a book a while back by Eddie Huang (the owner) called Fresh off the Boat and he talked about the place he opened called Baohaus that him and his brother Evan opened. The Taro fries have had me curious since I saw them. I need to remember this the next time I'm New York. You're so lucky to have so many Bao bun places in your vicinity in south florida we have these japanese/thai asian fusion places which are cool but I feel like NYC has so much more authentic foods /variety.

I live for the Buddha Bodai buns. They are my Friday night guilty pleasure. Add sriracha to them. Also the Bodai Kosher on Mulberry Street is better in terms of inspection since they have an A rating. The original owner moved over from Mott to Mulberry. They offer 10% discount if you order online.

Super late comment, but I don't see anyone mentioning the difference between baos. They are both types of baos, but they just come from different regions of China. The open type are called Gua Bao, are Fujianese, called be filled with different things, and are different than most other types of baos. The fully enclosed baos have different names based on what they are filled with or what type of wrap they have, but the kind you got from Buddha Bodhai are called Cha Siu Bao and are Cantonese. Cha Siu is a sweet and savory red bbq that's very traditional and popular, but if you don't care for that sort of flavor profile, it makes sense that you'd like it least. Also, just discovered your channel this past week and loving it! Just moved to NY, so I can't wait to try out all these places!

Ughhhhh I love bao but haven’t had it since going vegan because I can’t find any place near me that has vegan bao . Also the one you described as mapley ketchupy, sounds like it was sort of a play on the pretty traditional bbq pork bao because it can be pretty sweet and usually is almost like red in color in the filling from what I remember .

Bao buns (gua bao) are kinda rare depending on location. Some of the americanized modern hip asian restaurants might have it. Lucky if there's vegan options. The traditional old asian restaurants everywhere commonly have bao buns with peking duck meat (not vegan). I found a LA restaurant with a vegan bao bun option for ya.
