In Part 1, I asked how much detail folks wanted to see: The answer was clear: LOTS! So let's take a step back and look at the aluminum test dies, some of their flaws, and take a closer look at how to best design the next set of dies
This Series:
Having been a long time shooter and reloader, I am undertaking my next project for my new Emco V13 lathe: Making Copper Bullet Jackets. The process steps are to blank a copper coin out of a strip of copper, cup it, then draw it in to progressively longer and thinner-walled shapes. The goal in this project is to end up with a 9MM jacket which will be about 0.6" long and 0.352" in diameter. That jacket can then be used in a swaging system (e.g. Corbin) and combined with a lead slug to make an actual bullet! 5 Reasons to Use a Fixture Plate on Your CNC Machine: bit.ly/3sNA4uH

Excellent instruction for a neophyte like me... I especially like the casual tidbit about adding a bit of taper to the punches so as to make clearance and relief so as to not allow the "worked" pieces to grab onto the punching die.

Thank you so much for making this video series and simplifying this process. I had the hardest time trying to understand how this works from reading several books. You really helped me visualize how this process works.

No doubt, I expect it would complicate things. But I do believe that some form of stripper is necessary. Yes John I have had mine just over a year and very happy with it. It is a great machine. Watching your "tormach times" was instrumental in my ultimate purchase. I had originally placed my order with the "green one" but got sick of waiting (nearly 9 months) and asked for a refund. To their credit, they apologised and promptly refunded. Now Tormach, and I couldn't be happier. Great work john.

Many years late to this, but it was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to create a 165gr JHP 9mm for subsonic use. Couldn't find any with those specs so I wanted to see what the viability was of turning my own. Not very viable, as it seems.

Very work John. I would also expect all dies and punches to be polished, hardened, and some sort of die lube used during use, maybe even wax so that it is not as messy as oil. Really looking forward to following all of this.

Oil in your drawing operations. Regretfully you'll have to experiment with viscosity. Thicker oils will eat up your clearance but too thin and it'll wipe right off. Norma even uses olive oil in certain operations. Also, on your cupping operation cut a recess to locate your slug concentrically. It'll make subsequent operations more uniformly consistent

This is interesting. There is reloading info out there and there is machining info out there, but to the best of my knowledge nothing on die making for bullets. I have always wondered how they get that copper jacket on the bullet. We made another replacement splined machine shaft from 1144 today at work. The original had a worn bearing seat and the shaft had not been in service long. I can guarantee that 4340 or 5160 will work for you. I would advice caution when using 1144.

Hi John, Nice Vid once again. If I could throw in a penny's worth. My background is from the can making industry (many years ago). you mentioned at one stage in the vid that you thought that you would need to to perhaps put a taper on one of the forming dies because it would not come off the "punch". Might I suggest a taper should not work, because in providing that tapered clearance behind the front edge of the punch takes away the control of the FLOW of the material. A "stripper plate" works.

John, check your math. If you want half the weight, then you need half the surface area assuming the thickness stays the same. Half the surface area of a 1" diameter disc is a diameter of 0.707" (area = pi x radius squared). You don't want to use a 1/2" diameter to start with. Been following all your videos and appreciate you putting them up for the rest of us to view.

No official tool and & die experience, just trial and error with experience in machining and "making". Like you, I'm an engineer (in Ohio even) with an insatiable appetite for knowing how to make things from scratch. Not into shooting, but making is making, so I generally don't care what it is.
